hi guys,

i just got a sony smart tv, and my brothers got me an apple tv for my bday. would I use the apple tv, or should i just return it and let my brothers save their money?

Thanks

Does it have the A5X in it? Also, still 8GB Flash Memory?

It has a "Single core A5".

Like the previous version, Apple doesn't indicate flash memory. iFixIt found that out after opening the device.

It appears memory won't be a consumer visible comparison point like iPads and iPhones. If an app store is indeed coming (and it appears they're preparing for it), they'll have a small footprint as not to take up space in the 8GB.

Anyone know if airplay mirroring will account for the iPad's higher resolution?

The display resolution has nothing to do with Airplay mirroring. It's the resolution of the source material that matters.

If a developer updates their app to full take advantage of the retina display on an iPad, then it will also look better on your TV. It's no different than say mirroring a small photo that was taken with an old 1mp camera and another photo with a 12MP camera unscaled. The former is going to look awful.

Think also for comparsion, apps not designed for the iPad that have to be scaled. They look bad on the iPad, they'll look worse on the TV.

The iTunes Movies section just got updated with iCloud and a new "Purchased" link! Yay :D

The upgrade will be great from an Apple TV 1. For a ATV2, just update the OS and have most of the features. For me, I could care less about 720p vs. 1080.

I have over 300 movies of all types in my iTunes library (movies I've shot, movies from iTunes and movies from legally purchased DVD's I've converted) and I stream them all to my TV's via ATV2 (x2) and ATV1 (x1). Netflix, I'm a pretty frequent users.

I love Hulu and would love to have HuluPLus on the ATV3 natively. However, if I can send that to the ATV2 via Airplay from my Mac's in the OS X update, it will be great!

So, I was thinking that when they added 1080p support they would obviously offer support for 1080i, but it appears from the specs that it does NOT. I wanted 1080i so that I could use it on my rear-projection TV which does not support either 720p or 1080p

Compatible with high-definition TVs with HDMI and capable of 1080p or 720p at 60/50Hz

At the beginning of the HD transition weren't there a good number of TVs that didn't support 1080p (i.e. only 720p and 1080i -- you know, the HD broadcast standards)?

I just wonder whether the new software update continues to support 480p. If they've taken that out and don't support 1080i then I can't use the new Apple TV.

Thus (apparently), still nothing from Apple that can replace the 1st generation Apple TV for some of us early adapters.

icon-based interface is definitely paving the way for third-party apps.

WANT

I certainly hope so...why hobble the Apple TV so much? I can't imagine there are contract disagreements between content providers, since the Roku has Hulu, Amazon Video, and (I think) HBO GO. It has so much potential...Maybe some of these issues will be fixed with Airplay coming to Lion, but I don't want to have my laptop open every time I want to watch something.

No HuluPlus means I stay with Roku

Why even bother, just get a Roku for $50 bucks. It has been able to download apps for years.

And Roku has HuluPlus. That is 100% of the reason why I don't buy an AppleTV over a Roku. I know that Apple can offer it because it is already on iPhone and iPad. They are just trying to milk us for evey $1.99 per episode that they can get.

Oh well, looks like Roku still gets my purchase money.

I understand. However, this is not a unique problem to Apple. We have access to NBA, MLB, NHL, etc. but no NFL. The problem, for any services outside of broadcast TV and cable is this....and it's impacting everyone's ability to access the games via other methods. Even streaming radio broadcasts of games are restricted!

"DirecTV pays the NFL about $700 million a year for the exclusive right to sell the Sunday Ticket package. That package allows fans to see every NFL game on Sundays, as opposed to simply the games shown on local broadcast channels.

Major cable operators have been trying to reach a deal with the NFL to sell the Sunday Ticket and share revenue with the league, but the NFL has preferred to take a lump-sum payment from DirecTV, which has used the product to lure viewers away from cable subscriptions to satellite."

My PS3 does it fine :)

iCloud dowload purchased movies US only?

The iTunes Movies section just got updated with iCloud and a new "Purchased" link! Yay :D

I'm still trying to find out if this is available in all markets. Right now in iTunes Canada, I only see TV Shows, Music, Apps and Books. No movies,

EDIT: It requires iTunes 10.6. Available now.

Automatic downloads and downloading previous purchases require iOS 4.3.3 or later on iPhone 3GS or later, iPod touch (3rd and 4th generation), or iPad; iOS 5 on iPhone 4 (CDMA model); or a Mac or PC with iTunes 10.3.1 or later. Previous purchases may be unavailable if they are no longer in the iTunes Store, App Store, or iBookstore. Downloading previous movie purchases requires iTunes 10.6, iOS 5 or later, or Apple TV software 4.3 or later. Not all previously purchased movies are available for downloading to your other devices.Download iTunes 10.6 free.

For the life of me, I can't figure out why it's taken so long to get Hulu+ on the ATV.

Apple doesn't want to ruin iTune TV episode sales. I know it's not a technical or licensing issue because HuluPlus is already running on iOS with the iPhone and iPad.

Could someone clear something up for me... Now that the aTV can play things from iCloud, that means we don't need to have our Macs switched on to watch our content doesn't it? If so, that in itself is a big upgrade.

sounds like it. I believe many of us called Apple it doing a pretty BS move by limiting the last Apple TV to 720P. They wanted an excuse to try to get people to upgrade. I believe the chips in the last Apple TV even supported 1080P. Just Apple choose not to connect it so they could make the 1080P some huge update.

First of all, most people have 720p sets so it was really a moot point and a lot of budget 1080p TVs looks worse than a Cheaper but better 720p TV. I have 3 flatscreens. One 1080p and Two 720ps. I will buy the updated Apple TV and pass the other to the 720p. The older Apple TV will still work fine

People spend too much time thinking the need the best of something when for most, will not tap into the higher specifications. My kid does not care that his Sprouts channel is only 480p. He watches without complaining.

What makes you think that Apple is the hold-up on getting HuluPlus on the aTV? Perhaps Hulu doesn't want to be on the aTV. Or maybe not.

The Airport express hasn't needed an update. It's their entry level router, and it already supports N Wifi.

Well, we have the situation of having two items that more or less cost the same. One of them can stream music to speakers and has not been updated for four years. The other one can stream music to speakers but also has quite a lot of additional video-related functionality (and maybe support for apps sooner or later too), and has been updated right now.

Yes I know the Airport Express has a built in router, but I have a Time Capsule sitting right next to it, so I don't need any additional routing functionality, actually I wouldn't even need wireless functionality. A ethernet to AirPlay audio converter would be sufficient, if that existed.

It also supports audio cables, which the Apple tv does not. So why would you buy an Apple TV to stream music to speakers? That makes no sense. Do you have speakers with optical jacks or hdmi ports??? The Apple TV would not be a good device for streaming audio.

My stereo has a dual optical/analog audio in AUX port, which is what I've been using for the past five or so years. Until my Airport Express died a few months ago. Why should the AppleTV not be a good device for streaming audio?

The Airport express also allows you to use iTunes to select which speakers to send the signal too. The Apple TV also doesn't do this.

That's good to know, but for the size of my apartment a single set of speakers is sufficient. :)

On the existing Apple TV 2 you could already use iCloud streaming for TV shows and music, so that's not such a big change (I guess they've now added movies over iCloud for SOME of the studios and titles).

they're listing the processor as a "single core A5"
So,
- iPhone 4S = dual core A5, dual core GPU
- iPad ("the new") = dual core A5, quad core GPU
- Apple TV = single core A5, single core GPU

sounds strange

you beat me to it...

Not that unusual from the standpoint of chipmaking. Often multi-core chips (especially early on in the chip lifecycle) will have errors that render a core damaged or inoperable - often means throwing the entire chip away. However if designed properly (and there's a use) the producer can disable the inoperable cores and put the single core chip into use - it would seem a win-win for Apple...these would be chips they'd normally be throwing away if its really single core.

In order to download existing movies in 1080p, you need to go into the store settings in the iTunes preferences and select 1080p!

NO Upgrade prices for 720p owners!

There are no prices. iTunes will stream the movie at the highest resolution that your device supports. If you have an AppleTV3, it'll download and play your HD movies in 1080p (if available).

Are you americans able to re-download movies yet? I'm in Australia and it's not showing up here yet, I was hoping it would straight away :p

The Apple TV will likely be a dual-core A5 with a single SGX543.

I'm talking about downloading previous purchases on your Mac. And some people didn't believe that it would be free to upgrade your existing content to 1080p.

Yep, redownloading UP in 1080p right now :D
