LOL.. they are announcing an application package of applications that are already being offered and they still are going to wait 2 weeks to "ship" it. Just stupid.

Let's hope that when they release it they at least update them in any form other than an icon change (like a Liquid Glass UI update). It's been months since any of their apps have received an update.

And what will happen to Photomator? Hopefully they don't kill it, I just renewed my subscription this past December.
For the next two weeks, people will be posting about and discussing it such that even folks that aren’t interested in it will know it exists by the time it’s released AND will be aware of several lists of pros and cons. It’s primarily to increase engagement when it’s released and it’s bound to be effective.

I second everyone’s concern about the apps now being apart of a subscription. I totally get it, it takes a lot time and effort to create and update apps, especially to the caliber of Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro, but hopefully they’ve learned a thing or 2 from Affinity and keep the main functionality of the iWork apps and Freeform free. As for the pro apps, keep a one-time purchase version of each individual app available for Mac and a $4.99/month version of each individual app for the iPad. That way, depending on your individual needs and budget, you have options. I mean, with Adobe you have to buy a subscription to a bunch of apps you may not need just to get one you do. Why limited our options by forcing a one size fits all subscription model, even if you just need an app or 2?

Anyways, I’m definitely digging the new app icons btw, hopefully they update them for all of us.

Yea Apple, can't even deliver a polished OS and you want a subscription on these, good one.
Yeah exactly.

edit: Without a hint of irony, while typing this reply Safari froze and the keyboard went blank. I had to quit and reopen it twice for to work again. Sigh.

I generally agree. But the cup of coffee thing always bothers me. How much coffee are people drinking, and how expensive is this coffee, that people continually sacrifice cups of coffee to pay for things?

If this subscription approach is done right it can indeed be a legitimate alternative to piracy since in my day that's how the kids learned expensive software.

I think people are just afraid of the inevtiable enshirtification that comes once a product is a subscription. It changes the incentives.
“My latest sub has me up to 24 cups of coffee a day!”

As someone else noted, where is Photomator in all this?

Photomator has/had some capabilities above Photos.

Pixelmator is/was more like Photoshop than Lightroom.

I have been holding out hope that Apple could compete with Lightroom (specifically LrC). Photos falls well short, Photomator got closer but still far short, and at least pre-acquisition Pixelmator also didn't really add what was needed to match LrC.

I feel lighter already...... Yikes, Apple is sucking my ballast (money) out of my of pocket faster than it can be replaced as a non-commercial user.

Older folks are not looking for may ways to spend their limited income from social security.....

I really was just bending over to pick up my dropped pencil...

Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, Pixelmator Pro, Motion, Compressor, and MainStage will each remain available for one-time purchase
That’s on borrowed time however. Eventually Apple plans to phase them out and going forward you will need subscription to keep using them.

And yes, subscription makes sense since most of the new feature will need to be done online and need to be connected to internet at all time.

But they are not following playbook from Adobe by making subscription much more affordable though.

subscriptions SUCK !
Nothing wrong with subscription when one has the choice of buying it as Apple is providing unlike Adobe were users have no legal option to download and block the subscription part from Adobe software to use.

At least Apple is giving users a choice just like owning a home or renting a home.

My heart sank on the doubling down of LG, so much for all the feedback everyone has been providing, no need holding my breath for macOS 27.
Just have to always remember that people that don’t like what Apple’s doing tend to congregate and commiserate. Those that like or don’t care are very likely the vast majority of folks that provide their feedback by not having feedback. 🙂 Even if there were 1 million people on macrumors that don’t like LG (and there’s not), that would still be a very very small percentage of all users and doesn’t add up to be enough to change direction for.

Call it Aperture and throw it in the bundle

Also can we separate out the iWork stuff into a separate, cheaper subscription, or bundle it with iCloud, Apple One or something

Apple Creator Studio subscribers will also receive access to exclusive AI features and premium content across not only the Final Cut Pro and Pixelmator Pro apps, but also the iWork apps Numbers, Pages, and Keynote, and the Freeform app later this year. So if you want the best, fully-featured versions of all of these apps going forward, you will need to subscribe to the bundle.

The reference to the iWork apps worries me. I know that it only mentions access to “exclusive AI features and premium content” at the moment but once a division is made then what other new features might go behind that subscription paywall?

I’ll be moving from Windows to MacOS in a few months and I’d love to use as much Apple stuff as I can. I already plan to move my email from GMail to iCloud+ and my notes from OneNote to Notes. I’d love to move my spreadsheets to Numbers because it’s so much more flexible than Excel in terms of layout capabilities but unfortunately I can’t recreate a lot of the VBA functionality that I have implemented in my more complicated Excel spreadsheets. I was hoping that one day Apple might start adding some meaningful new functionality to Numbers but now I’m worried that if it ever does it might only be accessible to people paying for this subscription package.

The reason people are upset is because we have seen this playbook over the past decade+. This signals the END of owning Apple’s pro apps. Yes, we have the option today, but with high confidence we see this as the signal they will eventually be subscription only.
Within the last decade, Apple has charged a subscription for a pro app on the Mac?

Well, the apps have to be seriously enriched and upgraded to justify a sub ! I doubt you can introduce revolution in Pages, I just want a basic text editor...

The pixelmator icon going from

To

is baffling. As someone pointed out, it seems to be focusing on vector graphics but it's just such a weird icon.

I'm the same. I just assumed it was one of the support apps like Motion or something but Pixelmator! it doesn't exactly say image editor does it.

I get the top parts are layers but what are the 3 dots and the line about? It needs a paintbrush on it somewhere

Also... Oh noes! New icons! How will I do my work!?
When have icons ever prevented someone from doing their work? So it looks different, you’ll get use to it. I mean I actually prefer the new app icons to the current ones myself. It’s not out of the ordinary though that the app icons would be update as well, as when Steve Jobs was still around, anytime they did a major app update they would also redesign the icon. He was big on that sort of thing.
