It’s amazing that corporate bootlickers can’t see The Writing On The Wall, especially after enduring the complete debacle of the Adobe Creative Cloud money suck for the last 12 years. Yes, the apps are free… for *now*. But how anyone can be so stupid as to think they’re not going to raise the price inexorably until it hurts is just baffling.

As someone who’s suffered through Apple’s decline in the last ten years (seriously, have you been to the ‘Genius Bar’ lately?), I don’t think anything is as antithetical to the company’s ethos than turning into a subscription model. And why the most successful company in the world even *needs* a subscription model can only be justified by one word: GREED.

Congratulations Tim Apple, the only thing left to do on your way out the door is douse the flying saucer building in gas and strike a match.

LOL.. they are announcing an application package of applications that are already being offered and they still are going to wait 2 weeks to "ship" it. Just stupid.

Let's hope that when they release it they at least update them in any form other than an icon change (like a Liquid Glass UI update). It's been months since any of their apps have received an update.

And what will happen to Photomator? Hopefully they don't kill it, I just renewed my subscription this past December.

Curious if there will be some new hardware that will be announced around that time as well? It mentions any new purchase will get 1 month of free access, so maybe some new hardware around the same time?

According to an article from the Verge, you don’t need the subscription if you own these apps already. The subscription only includes access to the apps without paying full price for it.

What an odd decision to announce this so far ahead of the launch date. Kind of frustrating to know this is coming and not be able to take advantage of it. Wouldn’t you want to capitalize (!) on the excitement (if any) of the announcement?

I’ve been procrastinating on buying Final Cut Pro and using Premiere or Resolve for the occasional video edits that I need to make, so am sort of tempted to replace my Logic for iPad subscription with this, but it’s a harder sell given that I already own everything else in the bundle and don’t care about the AI crap.

Agree with all the anti-subscription and anti-end-stage-capitalism sentiment in this thread, still this is not a bad deal. I think the bolder move would be to make these apps available to anyone with a Mac or an iPad Pro. But of course this is not how you increase precious precious s e r v i c e s revenue.

I doubt they are ending that. Apple is keeping the traditional buy once model and adding a subscription model to it for people who want that.

Looking at the options, I’m QUITE sure they wouldn’t be set moving from an iPhone to one of those. 🙂 Maybe as an enthusiast device, but not as a daily driver (the site even says they can’t be daily drivers because of all the things they can’t do that non-Linux phones can).

Wonder when the free version will be so limited that it encourages people to upgrade to the paid version out of frustration.

The free version as it is now does more that most people will ever want to do. Anyone that wants the app to create a presentation for them likely desires that because they’re unable to create a presentation, period. AI is just enough to bring those that can’t do, up to the level of rudimentary results, and that’s more than worth the price for them. They’re likely typing into their chatbot of choice, “Should I buy this and what card should I use?”

If it’s anything like running the latest Apple programs on an x86 Mac, the option will be there, but it will be greyed out with a little note beside it. There are certain functions that “require Apple Silicon”, for example.

So we move from buying new, very expensive, Mac’s to unlock new features in one time purchase software to buying new, very expensive, Mac’s to be able to use all features of your subscription.
