Yeah, other than subscription fatigue I don’t see how anyone can be upset about this.
Especially if you are in education or going to school, $2.99 a month for access to logic pro? I mean, come on. Has there ever been a better deal than that? GarageBand used to cost more, iLife used to be $99 for every yearly update.
Add the education rate of $30 a year, it would take you 10 years to even reach what FinalCut costs on its own.
And you get access to the iPad version, and you get all of the apps included, and you get family sharing with up to six people… and the standalone purchase options are still available?
I mean, if Apple had to go the subscription way, at least they’ve done it the right way. It’s not required, it’s not overly expensive, and it is a real value.
Let’s not forget that in the 2000s FinalCut Pro was $1000 on its own and every time a major update came out you had to purchase it once again.
Sometimes I think people are just so blinded by the Internet rage echo chamber that they forget how good we really have it these days. I mean, being able to get a full completely intact pro digital audio workstation, the same one used by actual professionals in the business, for the same price of one coffee a month?
Just 30 years ago a set up like that would cost not just thousands of dollars, but hundreds of thousands of dollars.
There are a lot of young people here who don’t know what software used to be like. There were also a lot of older people here who forgot what software used to be like. Apple also used to charge for OS upgrades.

Since I’m in education, I might subscribe because the cost is extremely reasonable. At the higher prices, I wouldn’t because I don’t make a living from any of these tools.

"Apple says there will be Apple Creator Studio and one-time purchase "versions" of each app, but the exact implementation of this remains to be seen."

That's fine. Let me buy Logic Pro for iPad and I'll be happy. I don't want to have yet ANOTHER company with their hands perpetually in my pockets in hopes that I forget to cancel it while it's not being used.

Except that it really doesn’t, it seems to me.

With upgrade pricing we expect bug fixes and other patches. Managing these is not cost free for developers. Furthermore we expect them in perpetuity, which is more costly still. And at the same time we clamor for new features and even feel entitled to them!

In short we expect a lot more than just the original release that we bought…for free. This isn’t a rational expectation.

Correct. You plan for those things for a lifecycle of a purchase.

The key reason this is better is that you can "stop paying" and keep using your purchase at any point in time.

Not everyone needs every bug fix or patch, especially on this type of software.

Creative software can be used as is for enormously long periods of time and work just perfectly, making a subscription really non-sensical for many users.

This is wrong from an economics perspective. They actually have a hell of a lot more customers now than they did then and the distribution costs are trivial compared to what they used to be.

It is about both developing a dependency and future revenue stream at the same time. Merely wealth extraction. They could run the old model perfectly fine. They just don't because now they have control point and billing built out in the ecosystem it's convenient to just take money regularly. So why not?

I bought Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro YEARS ago one time purchase and so many updates. Now they want $129/yr for that? Let's see what "AI Features" and other features they throw in to make it worthy of a sub. Sad to see them go this route, but expected as people love paying subs. It's $12.99/mo / $129/yr NOW, check in with me in 5-6 years lol.

LOL.. they are announcing an application package of applications that are already being offered and they still are going to wait 2 weeks to "ship" it. Just stupid.

Let's hope that when they release it they at least update them in any form other than an icon change (like a Liquid Glass UI update). It's been months since any of their apps have received an update.

And what will happen to Photomator? Hopefully they don't kill it, I just renewed my subscription this past December.

I'll also add that a lot of software needs to lie potentially unchanged for years and may need to work offline. All things which are becoming a rarity.

The moment you tether it to a billing cycle or control point outside of your machine then you're in trouble.

The one thing I wish they'd charge for each year, they don't.

macOS

Why?
Because maybe then they'd actually properly staff it and care about it more.
I loved paying yearly for macOS. That was during the time when they still were dying for marketshare and would actually update it with important apps and features at rapid pace.

1) Proof that society is getting more boring as time moves on.
2) 2026 logo is definitely not a plaque of a platinum record. In fact, It looks kinda like a.... you know.

I know this image is AI slop, but the logos are real and I'm trying to prove a point quickly at work.

I hope this means they’ll invest in improving these apps.

I use Keynote a lot, and it’s been pretty much exactly the same for a decade. At some point they added some collaboration features that I’ve never used.

There are long-standing interface bugs and inconsistencies that I hope they’ll iron out (I’ve reported them but no action).

I wish Apple had acquired Affinity instead of Canva, but that ship has sailed…

It looks like all the apps are getting a version bump to 12 when this launches, I’ve spotted some new features for FCP, so hopefully that applies to everything else too.

I know we're supposed to be Anti-Apple here

[…]

And best part is for those that prefer to pay all up-front, still can.

It's a win/win for everyone. But I know I know, apple is bad.
The reason people are upset is because we have seen this playbook over the past decade+. This signals the END of owning Apple’s pro apps. Yes, we have the option today, but with high confidence we see this as the signal they will eventually be subscription only.

They have certainly diverged even more in direction. I think what Apple does with their session players is interesting per se, it's just not interesting for me. On the other hand, what Cubase does for example with their handling of chord tracks and the chord assistant etc. is interesting for me.
The thing with the Session Players, is that there is a software program Band-in-a-Box, which has existed for like 30 years (I own the 2015 and 2022 versions), that does the same job INFINITELY better. Why even bother with the Session Players when BIAB can do the same thing but better? I think anyone who's remotely serious about making backing tracks and such would spring the $150 to buy BIAB.

If I'm reading this right, they're paywalling AI features for Pages, Numbers, Keynote etc behind this creator studio bundle?

The bundle is a great value, but I always thought all the local inference performance building into macs for years was ahead of these features running local and free and those updates were just table stakes for ilife stuff

And I'd still LOVE an AI powered um and uh removal tool in FCPX
