I'm happy with my reference 6900xt at $999 but the sweet spot is the $579 6800.

Many folks say 6800 XT is the sweet spot, but it is fair to say that if a 6800 is enough performance, there is no sense spending more.

But those are all gaming cards, and these are workstation cards; with a lot more VRAM and more than likely ECC RAM.

Both of which are running 3x to 4x their MSRP during the pandemic

Not if you're smart and patient. Had the chance to buy any Nvidia Founders Edition GPU the other week for MSRP so 3090, 3080ti, 3080, 3070ti, 3070, 3060ti or 3060 and got the 3080 since it's the best bang for the buck at $700. Second choice would've been 3090.

The prices are not bad; a RADEON branded W6800 is $2500 at B&H; and I just ordered the Apple MPX module 6800X Duo for < $5000 (veteran discount). So not only do I have 2 of these things linked together on a single card; but with the MPX module niceties like internal DP thunderbolt routing and such.

Have we checked all the boxes?
Apple pricing too high.
Isn’t this the same as card X?
No one needs these cards.
Useless because not NVIDIA.
I can build X for $Y. Hur hur.
Can it play <silly game>?
Patient and knowledgeable responses to the above.
This post making this observation.
What are we missing?
That one guy “Blazerunner” asking for 6700XT drivers for his Hackintosh.

Apple today began offering new high-end graphics upgrade options for both the tower and rack versions of the Mac Pro desktop computer. This comes on the same day that Apple started selling the Magic Keyboard with Touch ID on a standalone basis.

As noted by CNN Underscored's Jake Krol, the Mac Pro can now be configured with new AMD Radeon Pro W6800X, W6800X Duo, or W6900X graphics when ordering the professional workstation through Apple's online store. The new options come at steep prices, ranging from $2,400 for a single W6800X module to $11,600 for two W6900X modules.

Apple's descriptions of the graphics modules:For customers who already purchased a Mac Pro, Krol said the new graphics modules will also be available on a standalone basis through Apple's online store, but the product listings have yet to go live, so pricing remains to be seen.

The current Mac Pro was released in December 2019 and still uses Intel processors, with an Apple silicon model rumored to be in the works.

Prices getting more and more ridiculous. If they want to attract macOS users who want an expandable system, there should be a high-end PC style option. I am willing to pay for design, but not these ridiculous prices.

For those curious, I tested the Vega ii duo vs 2x 6900 XTs, and the 6900xts won basically every time.

Resolve and Final Cut, 12k Braw to 4444 XQ, 8k red raw, 6k red raw, Pro res raw, etc. The 64GB of vram vs 32GB of vram did not seem to matter that much.

Even in Octane X and Motion, the 6900xt had better performance with less VRAM.

I guess you'd need something that specifically needs more vram to see a big difference

People, these aren't gaming cards. While they share certain elements, they are different.

You don't pay Dodge Ram 1500 pickup prices to buy a new 18 wheeler, and you don't expect the Dodge Ram 1500 to do what the 18 wheeler does.

You MIGHT be able to get the Dodge Ram to haul 100,000 pounds or you MIGHT get it to last 2 million miles, but you will NOT get it to do both without extensive modification. By the same token, the 18 wheeler won't get the fuel economy, track performance, or the same user options as the Dodge Ram. Different tools. Different Jobs. Different markets. Different price points.

That's about how similar they are, even if you get them both with diesel engines.

Perhaps this confirms that new Mac Pros won't come until next year?

So this October will introduce the new M1X pro laptops.
And 2022 will usher in the pro desktops,M1X iMac and Mac Pro.
No one really expects the Apple Silicon Mac Pros this year. They will need to most performant chips that Apple can build and have some special needs for memory and GPU that the current M1 generation cannot meet. Apple will probably bring out their mid-range chips this fall for the MacBooks and will probably use them in the larger iMAcs when those come out. They will need something much “bigger” for top range used in. the Mac Pros and that will likely take until late 2022 to be ready.

Other than the increased & ECC RAM they are the same. AMD doesn't play the same games Nvidia does with their workstation cards (gimping FP64 on consumer cards).
If anything you guys should be mad you aren't getting CDNA, which is designed for compute (OpenCL/Metal) instead of RDNA (which isn't) for the price.

As it should be, Vega's are CDNA cards (old tech) and the 6900's are RDNA2 (new tech). And there is no point for anyone to target CDNA cards when programming. RDNA2/3 is what to code for, and Apple should be optimizing Metal and other GPU related code for their own silicon and RDNA functions.
