Finally. I bought a Belkin dock that stopped working because it was not MFI certified, and Apple pushed an update that broke it. I'd pay $39 if someone could guarantee me it would work forever. There's an odd shortage of MFI lightning docks.

It supports the weight of the phone purely by the lightning connector?

Also, for some reason this product's insane profit margin is taking me aback. I know that cables are largely the same way, but they are generally half the cost. This is $40, and it costs $1 to make, maybe $5 total to make, pack, and ship to its destination (that's being generous). That's what - 700% profit?

You are forgetting that cheap products to make have to sell in very large quantities to cover the R&D/design/fixed costs used to make this.

If it comes with a cable, it's not that bad (a price). But if it's only the dock, I can't believe what kind of a dick came up with that price tag.

It's only the dock buddy. Oh Apple have always been ***** when it comes to pricing. That USB-type C adapter for $79 is the epitome of greed.

From the product page (for those to lazy to click):

Charge and sync any iPhone that features the Lightning connector with the iPhone Lightning Dock. Your iPhone sits upright in the dock as it syncs or charges, so it’s perfect for a desk or countertop. Even when your iPhone is in an Apple-designed case, it’s easy to dock. And you can unlock iPhone or use Touch ID without having to remove it from the dock. The iPhone Lightning Dock features an audio line-out port that connects to powered speakers. It supports headphones that include a remote control. And it supports other Lightning accessories, such as the Lightning to USB Cable (included with your iPhone). You can even conduct speakerphone calls with your iPhone in the dock.
Here are some ways you can use the iPhone Lightning Dock:
Connect the dock to your computer with the USB cable (included with your iPhone) to sync iPhone and charge its battery.
Connect the dock to an electrical outlet using the Apple USB Power Adapter (included with your iPhone) to charge the battery.
Place your iPhone in the dock and enjoy clear audio during speakerphone calls.
Connect the dock to powered speakers or a stereo using a 3.5-mm cable (sold separately) to play music and podcasts from your iPhone.

This is so not good Apple, I don't think they tested these items enough, I cut the sides out of my iPhone5 dock and have used it for 4 months now. Perfect! Guess what, there is not even enough back support from that.. It seems like the insides of my iPhone6 charging port have moved apart after time and now when I put in a cable it does nothing, I have to spend 10 mins a night to get it to charge( by bending it just right - the same direction the dock is pointing I might add). I'm getting on to apple soon to get it fixed. But this new dock REALLY worries me, it has no support for such a big phone we will see LOTS of broken ports like mine after this!!

This...is quite terrible. $39 for the dock, $19 for a lightning cable and $19 for a 5w charging brick to complete Apple's dock solution.

And the port itself is the only thing holding up the phone?

with this announcement, it appears certain that there will not be a near term change to USB-C, instead of Lightening, in iPhones.

USB-C has a lot to sort out. There have been previous attempts at "one cable for everything" going back fifty years in the business. Problem has always been functionality depended on a single mechanical connector that, when it breaks, the whole system goes down. IMO, the latest MacBook will be the only Apple device with USB-C as the single digital connector.

If people stopped buying stuff like this Apple would get the hint. But you can't blame Apple pricing this stuff high if people want to pay the high prices.
