Apple Introduces New iPhone Dock With Lightning Connector for $39

for what it's (not) worth, it doesn't include a cable:

USB-C has a lot to sort out. There have been previous attempts at "one cable for everything" going back fifty years in the business. Problem has always been functionality depended on a single mechanical connector that, when it breaks, the whole system goes down. IMO, the latest MacBook will be the only Apple device with USB-C as the single digital connector.

Doesn't Lightning have the same disadvantage?

Just gotta wait 3 years and it will come.:p

This white elephant had a longer pregnancy than real elephants (22 months)

Why would I need more clutter around?

Cable in the car, cable at home DONE!

No need for a more "sophisticated" or "aesthetic" charging station.

And yes, that tab will certainly not withstand bending.

Youtube video coming for Tab gate.

This is so not good Apple, I don't think they tested these items enough, I cut the sides out of my iPhone5 dock and have used it for 4 months now. Perfect! Guess what, there is not even enough back support from that.. It seems like the insides of my iPhone6 charging port have moved apart after time and now when I put in a cable it does nothing, I have to spend 10 mins a night to get it to charge( by bending it just right - the same direction the dock is pointing I might add). I'm getting on to apple soon to get it fixed. But this new dock REALLY worries me, it has no support for such a big phone we will see LOTS of broken ports like mine after this!!

I'm not saying it to be condescending, but check for lint in your phone's lightning port. I was having charging issues and noticed a small amount of lint that was causing similar charging issues to what you described.

Oh I did that was the first thing I did.. The inside looks bent up! Can't believe this dock when I saw it that's why I posted for the first time, I just thought Apple are you serious.... That will break so many iPhone ports

Exactly. If you're using a case, you're using your phone wrong (according to :apple:)

From the product page, "Your iPhone sits upright in the dock as it syncs or charges, so it’s perfect for a desk or countertop. Even when your iPhone is in an Apple-designed case, it’s easy to dock."

Bummer, sorry to hear that. I thought I should say something on the off chance there would be a simple solution for you.

It is expensive cause it has to have a digital to analog converter and the brain to run it. sure would be nice if $38 of the $39 price tag were the analog circuitry. Ha!

BTW, where is the remote??

with this announcement, it appears certain that there will not be a near term change to USB-C, instead of Lightening, in iPhones.

exactly what i was thinking! i was really looking forward to a future with USB C and one connector for everything.

but i forgot how much apple makes selling cables and dongles

Why are they saying three years late? The iPhone 5S had a dock that fit the iPhone 5 just fine... This is, at most, a year late, lol.

So lets summarize:

Apple Dock
- no cable included
- no charger included
- no remote control
- no back support for the iPhone

Did I miss anything?

I'm sure Apple would never test the support ability of their new dock, so it most certainly will snap within the first week.

no back support? it's looks like we can't touch the 6 Plus while docked

I have a similar third party dock and the connector is surprisingly strong - so no need for a back support as far as durability goes.

The real issue is that, given the small size of the plug and the thinness of the iPhone, it's a pain in the ass to dock your phone, especially when you're half asleep and fumbling from your bed. Not only does the phone have to be centered horizontally with the plug, but it must also be precisely aligned at just the right angle.

The old docks that featured an indentation for the phone weren't as clean and elegant looking and quickly became obsolete as new iPhone designs emerged. But they allowed you to effortlessly plug in your iPhone without any difficulty.
