It supports the weight of the phone purely by the lightning connector?

Also, for some reason this product's insane profit margin is taking me aback. I know that cables are largely the same way, but they are generally half the cost. This is $40, and it costs $1 to make, maybe $5 total to make, pack, and ship to its destination (that's being generous). That's what - 700% profit?

Look closely at the dock and connector. Think of how the phone fits on the dock. Think when the phone has pressure applied, where will it go into the stand? The answer is not the connector but into the sides of the dome shaped thing holding the connector. Not sure how people miss that...

I've spent close to $100 on third party docks that require I supply my own connector and cable and yes, they rely on the connector alone to hold the phone.

This...is quite terrible. $39 for the dock, $19 for a lightning cable and $19 for a 5w charging brick to complete Apple's dock solution.

And the port itself is the only thing holding up the phone?

Apple's new customer class, the ones that buy the gold watches, can afford it.

Will it work with a case, or will it be like every other dock I've had to ignore ever lol....

It will work with Apple's leather case. Not so much if you have something like an Otterbox.

----------

If it comes with a cable, it's not that bad (a price). But if it's only the dock, I can't believe what kind of a dick came up with that price tag.

Why are they saying three years late? The iPhone 5S had a dock that fit the iPhone 5 just fine... This is, at most, a year late, lol.

I guess they're remembering in 2012, the iPhone 5 had no dock. A year later, the 5S and 5C had docks. 5S fit the 5. Apple has been weirdly late with these docks.

I believe it is a matter of the person writing the article had no idea what they were talking about.. This is the first dock that will fit the iPhone 6/6+, but there has been a lightning dock as long as there has been a lightning port.

Reminds me of this, I got it from Poundland, yes, for £1!

It supported an iPad too, although it was right on the tipping point.

Maybe they'll have a lightning version soon. (I don't have anything lightning yet)

with this announcement, it appears certain that there will not be a near term change to USB-C, instead of Lightening, in iPhones.

exactly what i was thinking! i was really looking forward to a future with USB C and one connector for everything.

but i forgot how much apple makes selling cables and dongles

Yup exactly what my first thoughts were as well...

I'm kind of an Apple purist (don't usually like third-party stuff), but I got a Twelve South HiRise dock a few months ago, and I like it. It's adjustable for case compatibility if you need it, has back support, and is made of high quality aluminium*.

*not true, but it's solid

or they want to sell a boat load of these before switching to usb c

rinse...repeat

Wow, was my iPhone dock supposed to feel snappier? I thought that was just Safari.

If Apple were more serious about recycling than the bottom line and PR, at this price the thing would also have a 30 pin input on the back so we could re-purpose the 8 old cables we already have.

Just one Dock for 6 different models? Come on Apple. Did you forget about the good old days where every model had it's own dock? You can do better than that. :p

I really don't find the price that absurd, considering what I paid for my HiRise stand.

Don't really consider the fact that it doesn't come with a lightening cable to be an issue. You'd just use the one you're using now.

The lack of support for the device though.....that's enough to make me stay away. Been using the TwelveSouth Hi-Rise for a few years now and really like that if anyone is in the market for a dock.

Perfect timing for an announcement of the move to USB-C next month for all future devices

Is that aluminum or plastic?

You're confusing Apple with Samsung.

An interesting side effect of Apple's growing popularity is that their products are now owned by many who don't understand or appreciate the design philosophy that made them successful. If you think Apple omitted a 30 pin connector because it would hurt their bottom line, you have little understanding of the company and its products.

The article implies that this is the first lightning dock made by Apple, this is not true though there has been a dock for the iPhone 5/5s introduced in 2013 alongside the 5s.
Just some Apple trivia #
