You're confusing Apple with Samsung.

An interesting side effect of Apple's growing popularity is that their products are now owned by many who don't understand or appreciate the design philosophy that made them successful. If you think Apple omitted a 30 pin connector because it would hurt their bottom line, you have little understanding of the company and its products.

My word that is ugly.

You are spot on.

I'm still rocking the "Belkin Charge + Sync Dock" at home and work. Works with 6+ just fine! Plus you don't have to give up a lightning cable as one is built into the dock. I also have their iPad one at home for the same purpose.

Microsoft does not do hardware mate. A software company that dabbles in some hardware.

What is your definition of Best? And why would you say backwards compatible? You know you can get adapters for the lightning port for current interfaces. See Apple store mate, look at lightning adapters.

My point is that too many people bitch and moan every time Apple abandons an aging technology or spec and embraces something new and forward looking. They were the first to abandon serial ports and floppy disks and they chose to create a superior design for their Lightning connectors rather than choosing the less capable, less convenient, but cheaper and more universally compatible micro-USB.

Microsoft, in contrast, built their empire in large part on trying to please everybody, creating a menagerie of poor to mediocre products meant to check off every box in a list of features requested by business partners and users.

The result is that Apple makes products that do a few things very well and delight their core customers, while Microsoft has historically made products that do a lot of things poorly in the hope of addressing the broadest possible market.

It's great that Apple has finally gotten the success and recognition they've deserved all along, but it's less gratifying when some of these late comers demand Apple abandon their principles and follow other companies' failed product strategies.

Thanks for this. I just bought 3 from Amazon for $9.68 each (Amazon Warehouse Deals - Like New). One for me, one for the wife and one for my office.

Yes, black plastic looks better than white, because their white plastic turns yellow over time. Have an older iMac keyboard that does that.

Maybe they solved it in the meantime.

If you have an Apple product that has turned yellow, it's either a product from 15 or 20 years ago or something that's been sitting in a home with a chain smoker. I have a drawer full of old Apple cables and accessories and none of them have turned yellow.

Worst. Design. Ever.

What has Jony Ive been smoking since Steve died?

That little connector might as well be the tip of a flathead screwdriver prying open my phone every time I put pressure on it.

I've always hated these docks. They should honestly just come in the box with the phone. If Apple can ship me a useless headphone storage box, why not a dock??

I will probably still order one, but seriously!

I think you answered your own question. Why would apple give something away when you're willing to pay them $40 for it?

Considering there are better docks already available (like the Belkin posted above) yet you're still willing to overpay for a sub par dock just because it's apple, can you really blame them for taking advantage of that? You're practically begging to be ripped off.

yyyeah, if you could just go ahead and cite your data regarding apple's manufacturing costs plus design, engineering, labor, transport, marketing, etc, thatd be greaaaat....

You'd think that if Apple were indeed selling accessories for $40 that cost them pennies to make, then others would be crawling over each other to sell competing versions. And yet most every third party accessory we see in the market is either a cheaply constructed piece of junk that's likely to catch on fire, or a semi-decently made facsimile that costs just as much as the original Apple-made accessory.

This price is simply undefendable.

Also, nearing 3 years on the calendar after Lightning's debut.

Ouch...
I admire their self-confidence though and the unquestioning part of their herd.

Glassed Silver:ios

Your product analysis is as good as your English.

In this case "original apple-made" doesn't appear to be decently made at all. You say that like it automatically means a class above the rest

Awesome! I have SO missed using my 30-pin dock, especially places like on my night stand, where my phone could be in an upright position and also makes for a nice alarm clock. Will be getting one of these for sure.

Also, with that raised bump, that seems to indicate the connector is elevated... does this mean it will support iPhones with cases on them, like the Apple cases?

The Zune dock had:

- HDMI
- Toslink optical out
- 3.5 mm analog out
- USB cable
- AC charger
- Remote control

The ports were on the back so it maintained a clean look.

I realize Apple TV covers some of this but only if both devices are on a network together. A simple dock with some flexibility is nice sometimes.

Speaking of Apple TV, it's $69 while this dock is $39. Think about that for a minute. Comes with AC power supply, remote control, ports, WiFi. The dock just doesn't have much of a value argument and you can tell it is priced the way it is just to fit in line with the other overpriced cables and adapters.

I won't waste my time trying to change your mind but I gotta ask why you waste yours on an Apple forum when you clearly have little appreciation for Apple's value proposition.

I find this pointless at this moment in time, it should have been released since the iPhone 5. Eventually, Apple will go with USB-C on all their mobile devices and eventually update their Macs with USB-C connectors. We'll all be using USB-C to USB-C cables for power and data.

This is just going to be outdated like firewire and the iPod 40-pins connector. It's probably released to make a few extra bucks before they do away with it and make a USB-C dock for the upcoming iDevice updates.

Just bought and had a Thunderbolt 2 lightning dock delivered by OWC.

Got annoyed that the port anemic 2014 MBP 15" I just also bought has only 3 USB slots and adapters needed, and , and....
All the hook ups to be disconnected and reconnected all the time can't be good for the plugs and ports.

What a thoughtful product:

5 USB charging ports , HDMI, 2 Thunderbolt2 connectors, Firewire 800 (still have that) , audio out, microphone in , Ethernet. AC connection.

2 USBs on the side all others in the back. Clean looking.

Again, what a thoughtful product.

Puts all others to shame. Researched ElGato, Belkin and others.

Not cheap at $ 290 with 1 m cable) but only one connector TB to MBP
to hook up or leave.

That is what Apple should have come out with, instead of a charging station.

I know, sounds like advertising, but I do not work for OWC . Just like their products and buy whatever they have is good. (Their SSDs are )

A thousand no's for every yes.

with this announcement, it appears certain that there will not be a near term change to USB-C, instead of Lightening, in iPhones.

Maybe but not necessarily. Yes it's strange that they waited this long. But this product does not seem like a huge investment, so even if they decided to switch it up to USB-C in the near future, the fact that there are so many lightning devices out there currently would have probably made this dock still worth it.
Not saying they will change it though.

----------

You are forgetting that cheap products to make have to sell in very large quantities to cover the R&D/design/fixed costs used to make this.

How much R&D could this have possibly costed? There's no new technology. It's a plastic slab with a lightning connector sticking out.
