Apple always focuses on making the best product - not the most backward compatible. If you prefer the latter approach, I'm sure Microsoft would welcome you with open arms.

So black plastic to look like every other piece of disposable consumer electronics since the 1980s?

Yes, black plastic looks better than white, because their white plastic turns yellow over time. Have an older iMac keyboard that does that.

Maybe they solved it in the meantime.

If anything this should be aluminum.

keyboards are not the same as a solid piece of glossy protected plastic. I've never had a apple white item turn yellow.

It absolutely should be aluminum. Every single device compatible with it is made of aluminum. It would look much better if it came in space gray, silver, or
Gold anodized aluminum.

Also, for some reason this product's insane profit margin is taking me aback. I know that cables are largely the same way, but they are generally half the cost. This is $40, and it costs $1 to make, maybe $5 total to make, pack, and ship to its destination (that's being generous). That's what - 700% profit?

yyyeah, if you could just go ahead and cite your data regarding apple's manufacturing costs plus design, engineering, labor, transport, marketing, etc, thatd be greaaaat....

This price is simply undefendable.

Also, nearing 3 years on the calendar after Lightning's debut.

Ouch...
I admire their self-confidence though and the unquestioning part of their herd.

Glassed Silver:ios

Microsoft absolutely is a hardware company now. They make tablets, phones, Xbox, and likely more in the not too distant future.

A software company that dabbles in some hardware.

I think the point MH01 was making was that all this hardware is but an accessory to sell more copies of Windows, and other software. If someone came along and built a Windows game station that didn't ring, and made Microsoft more money we probably wouldn't see an XBox two.

I've been using a Lightning dock without back support just like this for almost two years with my 5s AND my iPad Mini. No problems.

Yes, I've been using my iPad Mini docked on a port just like this.

Tell that to the Surface team, since they're on their third iteration of that, with regular and Pro versions.

Are you serious? They sold like 80 million XBox360s. I used to have a Microsoft Sidewider, it was amazing. They also make mice, mp3 players, and tablets. Technically they also make the Lumia phones now.

So, Microsoft has a few hardware products and you think they are now a hardware company..... I think you guys need to research what microsoft's core business is, and what they dabble in.

If the hardware you guys mentioned was the core of Microsofts business, they would have gone under a long time ago. Microsoft have had to pump money to support these, not profit from them.

So much whining here.

It's a dock, from Apple. Hence high quality, so stop comparing it to cheap a** flimsy third party docks. And stop claiming the lightning part will snap off within a week, because it won't. There is no "back support" because it's not necessary, because Apple tested this. Also it looks better that way, minimalistic and clean. It has audio out, too, hence a built-in DAC. It's not a bargain, but it's also not overpriced. Just like every other Apple product. You get what you pay for, every time.

So stop the whining, it just makes you look cheap and/or uninformed.

here, here! The Future for president!

Ripoff accessory price as usual.

You can get a Belkin dock for half the price, and an Apple-looking dock for ~$5 on EBay...

an Apple-quality dock w/ a lightening DAC for half the price? links, or it didnt happen. i wont hold my breath.

Exactly mate.

The iPhones at the Apple Stores are docked and supported on just a lightning cable so I guess they found that it was stable enough

Great, but

Seriously, why so long? Also I am sure iPhone 7 will use the USB-C as this is the first standard that will most likely be used by all devices now that Apple has embraced it. Will we have to wait another 3 years for a USB-C dock that will support iPhone 7, 7s, 8.

Also, not sure about this as there is no additional device support other then the connector itself. While I am sure Apple made the dock sturdy, I do not trust that relying the port on the iPhone alone is able to handle the strain of supporting the iPhone, and the inevitable user touch and push against it. We are probably going to see a lot of warranty repairs of loose or broken iPhone lightning ports in the near future I think.

I guess after 3 years most of the 5 and 5s warranties have expired and this will generate more repair revenue or upgrade paths because Apple needs to grow their profit more.

Microsoft does not do hardware mate. A software company that dabbles in some hardware.

What is your definition of Best? And why would you say backwards compatible? You know you can get adapters for the lightning port for current interfaces. See Apple store mate, look at lightning adapters.

The Zune dock had:

- HDMI
- Toslink optical out
- 3.5 mm analog out
- USB cable
- AC charger
- Remote control

The ports were on the back so it maintained a clean look.

I realize Apple TV covers some of this but only if both devices are on a network together. A simple dock with some flexibility is nice sometimes.

Speaking of Apple TV, it's $69 while this dock is $39. Think about that for a minute. Comes with AC power supply, remote control, ports, WiFi. The dock just doesn't have much of a value argument and you can tell it is priced the way it is just to fit in line with the other overpriced cables and adapters.

So you chose the Smart Dock Multimedia Hub as an example of Samsung Design compared to Apple? Uh, okay. Why not choose the Charging Dock instead? You know, since it performs the same function.;) Except there's less chance of damaging the charger or the phone since the phone would be supported.

As for that media hub, I would take it all day over a charging dock. It has HDMI out for a monitor or TV and USB connections for peripherals or added media. Apple should create a lightning media hub, imo of course. Much better than a $40 charge and sync dock. Many uses.

Just bought and had a Thunderbolt 2 lightning dock delivered by OWC.

Got annoyed that the port anemic 2014 MBP 15" I just also bought has only 3 USB slots and adapters needed, and , and....
All the hook ups to be disconnected and reconnected all the time can't be good for the plugs and ports.

What a thoughtful product:

5 USB charging ports , HDMI, 2 Thunderbolt2 connectors, Firewire 800 (still have that) , audio out, microphone in , Ethernet. AC connection.

2 USBs on the side all others in the back. Clean looking.

Again, what a thoughtful product.

Puts all others to shame. Researched ElGato, Belkin and others.

Not cheap at $ 290 with 1 m cable) but only one connector TB to MBP
to hook up or leave.

That is what Apple should have come out with, instead of a charging station.

I know, sounds like advertising, but I do not work for OWC . Just like their products and buy whatever they have is good. (Their SSDs are )

with this announcement, it appears certain that there will not be a near term change to USB-C, instead of Lightening, in iPhones.

Of course not, why would they move to a LARGER port on the iPhone when they developed Lightning which is SMALLER than USB-C.

Form over function.

Well that's a shock coming from Apple.

I would never buy such a piece of rubbish, having the whole device just held in place leaning back by it's power connector, putting strain on components simply for a bit of style over safe and practical functionality.

God help everyone if they every designed a car!

At my local store they look like this:

For lack of finding a better pic!

They do love their white plastic. They could at least have released versions to match the colour of your iPhone. I'm not going to buy one anyway but still.

Only like 8 months late. I already bought a Belkin iPhone 5 dock that works fine with the iPhone 6.

Can the lightning connector safely support the weight of the phone? There doesn't seem to be any back support.

This is why I like Apple Design. Image

I think that's for their tablets though and it gives you bunch of outputs including the two USB ports you can use with flash drives or a wired keyboard, not something you can do on the iPad.

Should be fine. I've been using that aluminum lightning dock adapter since the iPhone 5 came out. And the connector isn't even integrated but rather pushed up from below from a lightning cable. This integrated solution should work perfectly for years to come.
