Apple has introduced the option to download iOS software updates using 5G cellular data on the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max, according to a support document published this week.

To download iOS updates over 5G, users will have to enable the "Allow More Data on 5G" mode in the Settings app under Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Data Mode. Apple says this mode also enables higher-quality video and FaceTime calls, and allows third-party apps to use more cellular data for enhanced experiences, when connected to 5G networks.

According to an internal Verizon document obtained by MacRumors, the ability to download iOS updates over cellular is limited to 5G iPhones with the "Allow More Data on 5G" mode enabled. On all previous-generation iPhones, and on iPhone 12 models that are connected to an LTE network, downloading iOS updates will still require a Wi-Fi connection.

Apple's support document also confirms that when using iPhone 12 models in Dual SIM mode, 5G is not supported on either line, except in China. Apple plans to enable 5G in Dual SIM mode in other countries later this year.

People that don't have data caps with an unlimited plan, don't have WiFi nearby and/or have slow WiFi at home?

Also, I'd love to know if iCloud backup is possible over 5G.
On the AT&T Unlimited Elite plan (their top tiered unlimited plan), after 100GB of use, they will slow your speeds if the network is busy.

no charging brick in new iPhone 12, So unable to Charge.. Apple says they’re saving the environment..

Charging components (adapters + cables) included with previous lightning-equipped iPhones and iPads continue to charge iPhone 12 models. If the iPhone 12 is your only Apple device or if your other Apple device uses a 12-pin connector you can also buy a USB-C adapter from Apple or other reputable manufacturers and use the included USB-C cable

Sarcasm flew over your head... how about you just give me your charging brick so I won’t have to buy one and kill the ozone?

I see mine was too subtle for you ;) Don't worry, you'll get it... now.

nope.. you were serious as a tick. I’ll give you my cash app and you can send me the money for the charging brick.. We can save the planet together..

We love you Tim Cook, next year just don’t put an iPhone in the box.. you know how how much trees would be saved if they just send us iPhone boxes and we would buy the iPhones separate?

I have plentiful mobile data plans, but iPhone won't allow me download with built-in mobile data. Here's my usual workaround :
  1. I had 4G USB modem, pulled out sim card from iPhones
  2. Attach it on my USB port behind my router, set primary internet source from USB modem
  3. Run iPhone wifi only, connect to router SSID
  4. Voila finally I can used my own data plan !!
Android aren't so much fuss when comes to updates. Most of major OTA updates can be carried out within built in data plan without so much fuss.
