Price comparison - 24 Season 8

Buy on Amazon.com = $38.99
Buy RRP = $49.99

Rent once on iTunes = $23.76 (61% of Amazon purchase price)
Rent twice on iTunes = $47.52 (almost as much as DVD RRP!)

$0.99 is a complete rip off for a rental. I think they should be aiming for around 10% of DVD retail price, 20-30% maximum.

And it's available on Amazon for rent for [guess] $0.99 per episode.

2. Kevin Rose is having a terrible week...his digg update has been a disaster...and he's been quoted everywhere that the new ATV will "change everything". If it can't get an ATV owner to upgrade...it ain't gonna change anything...
I agree. As a current Apple TV owner getting this will be a downgrade not an upgrade.

Another useless toy. still no true HD quality, just a streaming pseudo HD format. no thank you, i want maximum quality on my full hd screen.

Any idea if they'll backport the software to the old appleTV?

I still need the analog audio outputs (use them for my remote zone played through my AV receiver), so this new device wouldn't work without also buying a separate optical->RCA audio converter (about $50).

But I like the new Netflix ability.

Can't you just buy it through your device (say an ipad) have it forever and simply push it to your TV? Cause if you have kids like me you need the Princess and the Frog on the ipad, especially on Monday Nights (Football)

Yeah, I don't want to buy more devices just to replace the local ATV storage. Most of all, I want the kids (and the nanny) to have it easy.

I hear you, but I'm not yet sure the new setup works for large families with tons of kids and nannies. Maybe for the hip youngsters it does.

I think the big thing that is being missed here is that you will be able to stream content direct from an iOS device to the AppleTV. That's huge.

I agree. This is my favorite addition. As a teacher this would be an amazing tool for the classroom. At home, it makes pulling up video that much easier.

I am praying that they will update the current Apple TV, but I haven't read far enough to see if this is happening.

I'll miss the storage (my neighbor more so) the most. She just likes to run slideshow with music for hours. Especially when company is there. We even took the audio out of the old apple tv and run it to the stereo so the same music plays outside. Now the macbook will have to be plugged in so it can stream everything, hi res pictures and music. A usb port for an ssd would have been nice.

You should get a BDp with Netflix. Rent movies on BD from Netflix for less dollars, more quality, and the same streaming.

I do have Netflix and I get many movies in BD, but the selection of TV shows for steaming is sadly limited and often very poor quality. I'm getting close to canceling. Most nights I don't want to watch a two hour movie, so I watch mostly TV shows. $.99 for 45min HD episode w/o commercials sounds like pretty good deal to me, if the quality is high enough.

So let me get this straight..
I can't plug in my external HDD and watch films off that?

apple tv canada

*99 cent HD TV rentals only available in the US.

So what are we Canadians going to rent with this apple tv, it'll probably be useless box ?????? Is CRTC involved and we are not allowed to rent.

...and they didn't call it iTV! :D

+1

I'm surprised nobody else is really talking about this. Steve Jobs never has seemed to be one to back down from using another company's trademark. But I guess this time the UK's iTV was too powerful a threat/force!

Want it but there's no normal analog audio out. I have an old Apple TV that is hooked to my TV with HDMI but also to a boom-box alarm clock system for use with Airtunes. Now that will be shot. Unless I go the Airport Express route.

Well, there's another nail in the coffin of Blu Ray. In a couple of years people are going to be wondering why they spent all of that money on those expensive discs.

I feel sorry for people that believe that.

Enjoy your 3Mbps 720p movies. In the meantime, I'll continue watching my 30Mbps 1080p movies in DTS HD-Master Audio.

Apple did enough with ATV. I ordered one.

Combination of Netflix plus streaming from computer at $99 with remote is the "good enough" part.

TV rentals could be a bonus. Probably won't do many HD Movie rentals as REdbox and Netflix dvds are good enough for me and much cheaper.

If I like I will order 2 more for the other TVs in the house.

$99 ~ £64 at current exchange rates to the UK.

So on what planet can Apple justify $99 = £99, even if you considered sales tax?

There are almost 200 episodes of 24 between seasons 1-8. Why would I watch them more them all more once. I can understand watch a few key episodes twice, but not whole seasons. For many people, Apple's solution would be the cheapest by a wide margin.

For the ability to stream Netflix, this seems pretty cool. Renting TV shows and videos, no. But a dedicated Netflix device, I'm all for that. But only 720p? WTF (facepalm)

Yea, total failure even if it were free I wouldn't pay those outrageous rental rates even if that box could play real HD video and I already have and use Netflix on my PS3. You're laughable, Apple. Blatant attempt to make money. Shame Shame Shame.

You might like the Roku media player...

I was hoping for more. I run Windows 7 Media Center for our living room TV, and have this Roku player for our bedroom TV.

http://www.amazon.com/Roku-N1101-HD...2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1283371644&sr=8-2

The Roku player has built-in wireless N, and content from NetFlix, Amazon Video On Demand, Pandora, and others. You can download a "channel" (really, their channels are media-delivery apps) that allows you hook up a USB drive for your stored content.

Like Apple TV, it is $99 and is 720p.

We love our Roku player, and would probably choose it again.
