I'll miss the storage (my neighbor more so) the most. She just likes to run slideshow with music for hours. Especially when company is there. We even took the audio out of the old apple tv and run it to the stereo so the same music plays outside. Now the macbook will have to be plugged in so it can stream everything, hi res pictures and music. A usb port for an ssd would have been nice.

There is one on board:D

Ports and interfaces
HDMI2
Optical audio
10/100BASE-T Ethernet
Built-in IR receiver
Micro-USB (for service and support)

Unknown yet. It has a USB port on it, but not sure what it's for yet. My guess would be hooking up an Ipod or something.

Check the tech specs: http://www.apple.com/appletv/specs.html "for service and support"

I guess we could hope that "support" might mean supporting local storage by simply hooking it up.

But I doubt it. It's probably a USB port just like the old one's USB port. If so, hopefully the hackers will normalize it (again).

I feel sorry for people that believe that.

Enjoy your 3Mbps 720p movies. In the meantime, I'll continue watching my 30Mbps 1080p movies in DTS HD-Master Audio.

Don't talk down to people. Makes you sound like an ass.

Vat

Once again, apple screws it's international customers.

Can someone tell me how $99 USD translates to £99 GBP.

NO.

Don't forget that in the UK you have VAT which is already figured into the sales price. In the US, since sales tax varies even from city to city it is not added until the point of sale. Then when you figure that UK VAT ranges from 2-3x average US sales tax, then the difference in price is still there, but not nearly as drastic.

Well in its favour it's smaller and cheaper than the previous one.

er... yeah, um...

But did I mention how it's smaller and cheaper than the last one?

*99 cent HD TV rentals only available in the US.

So what are we Canadians going to rent with this apple tv, it'll probably be useless box ?????? Is CRTC involved and we are not allowed to rent.

We get the other services. All the hardware and software is in place for full functionality. It's just a case of negotiating agreements and getting regulatory approval. So, one to two hundred years. It's annoying, i agree, but it's not Apple's fault. The CRTC is slow and way, way, way out of date. Part of their mandate is to protect Canadian content, but they will certainly interpret that as protecting Canadian broadcasters and not see that getting CBC, CTV, and independent Canadian producers to sign on with the AppleTV model gets the content out there just as well. The broadcast era is beginning to fade, but broadcasters have a lot of money (read influence) and have no interest in competing.

So lemme get this straight. If I wanted to watch a TV show on my new Apple TV, but that show isn't available for rent, I'd have to first fire up my computer, launch iTunes and buy it there, wait for it to download and then stream it to the Apple TV?

...

2) I think Steve is right, this AppleTV contains the stuff the regular public cares about the most. I'm betting it will be much more popular because of the things it leaves out.

People want simple things to hook up to their TV. That's why only nerds like us hook up computers to televisions. If everyone liked that they'd have done it by now. But they haven't.

...

I generally agree, although it would be nice to activate the _existing_ USB port (since there's no built in HD any more) so that you can plug in your own external HDD/key.

This shouldn't change the price tag.

I agree that this just sucks. The streaming performance better be good, and much better than the current model.

Apple did enough with ATV. I ordered one.

Combination of Netflix plus streaming from computer at $99 with remote is the "good enough" part.
.

I considered waiting but didn't. I picked up a Sony bluray dvd player for $199. I have access to Netflix, Hulu Plus, Pandora, Slacker, and can stream my videos from my iMac.

Sorry but this isn't 'good enough'. It's pitiful

SD rentals start from just £2.49, and HD rentals from £3.49. You have 30 days to start watching, and once you begin, you can watch as many times as you want in 48 hours.

Apple US said:

The UK site has no reference to TV shows either, whereas the US site has a section for $.99 rentals.

:apple:

Not so huge, just sounds like it.

Think about it, how did you get that content onto the iOS device. You either bought it via iTunes store (which automatically puts it on your computer at next sync), or you took it from your computer and synced it to your iOS device.

Either way, sync AppleTV to your computer and you have the exact same thing!!! Your computer and AppleTV even pick up where you left off watching!

This demo was all flash, made to make people say "Oooooh, coooool!" without their realizing they already had this.

Not true. You could not stream from your iOS device to the AppleTV before. You had to sync it and then play it. This would allow other people to come in and show content from their phones:

-home movies
-a movie they rented and brought over
-photo albums

Depending on the layout of your house, this is a big jump. Before, as you said, you actually had to plug your phone in and sync everything back to your computer. This allows you to watch without having to plug in.

Obviously if you live in a studio apartment where everything electronic is in the same general location, this is a pretty pointless device. But if you have a TV on one floor and a computer on another, you don't always want to go and plug in your phone or iPad just so you I can finish watching a movie.

However, I do agree with you. The demo seemed a bit underwhelming and quite frankly, as a PS3 owner, I can't imagine actually needing to use this device to watch Netflix or HD rentals. Then again, Steve sounds a lot more excited about this AppleTV than the previous model.

Don't forget existing Apple TV owners!

At the very least, the current model needs a whole slew of bug fixes. I hope Apple will not leave it as-is.

Here's a question - will the older Apple TV work with iTunes 10?

$99 ~ £64 at current exchange rates to the UK.

So on what planet can Apple justify $99 = £99, even if you considered sales tax?

Planet Britain, where consumers put up with it, and Planet Apple, who know they will get away with it.

For the UK USD99 = GBP 99. Since when was the exchange rate 1:1?

Again, the US price is pre-tax, the UK price is post-tax (@17.5%), + 'duties and levies' that have always seemed a bit of a wishy-washy unspecific explanation by Apple... usually called 'cost of doing business' (?!)

So at current exchange rates it should be no more than about £79 by my reckoning. I have no idea where Apple is getting that extra £20 from.

Component to HDMI converter. Problem solved.
unfortunately those don't work with encrpyted content, which i'm almost certain aTV streams will be.

Another useless toy. still no true HD quality, just a streaming pseudo HD format. no thank you, i want maximum quality on my full hd screen.
it always amuses me when people see a device that doesn't suit their needs and write it off as "useless" or a "toy". to start 720 isn't pseudo-hd, in fact anything down to 480p can legitimately be called HD.

secondly any streaming service is going to compress the video so 1080p streamed isn't going to look as good as 720p standard - seriously go look at youtube 1080 streams and compare them to an itunes 720p; youtube is blocky and slightly blurry. if you want maximum fidelity then you're stuck with blu-ray - and even then somewhat at the mercy of the engineer who encodes it (e.g. gladiator).

thirdly most television sets don't actually display 1080 or 720 lines of resolution, during fast moving scenes the horizontal resolution can easily drop by half.

fourthly almost no broadcast, satellite or cable television broadcast in 1080p, and in fact their efforts to make their service seem better than the other guys they stuff more content down the same pipes, compressing their video a lot.

from my experience itunes downloads offer some of the best quality video of any download service and even cable/satellite. it's perfectly fine for television and most movies even on my 109" screen. if it's a movie i want to experience in optimal quality i'll buy blu-ray, but for a friday night movie with the wife and/or friends 720p is more than adequate.

Hopefully the hackers can find a way to hook up external storage to the usb and put some decent gui on it like atv.

no usb support in the new apple tv, so if there are hacks it's going to be a lot tougher for the "average" consumer to use them

Overall I'm pleased with the announcement.

If I do get one it will be more for the AirTunes functionality with ipad/iphone than anything else..

I wonder if it will allow you to stream games from the iphone/ipad to the tv via AirTunes?

I thought they could have easily taken over the wii's entire demographic with iOS integration and a game controller but i guess the potential is still there.

Renting media isn't for me but I can see how some people would prefer it to be that way (while others would rather own the media).

I don't know.. great for some people, useless for others. Most high-end tvs have netflix streaming built in (as well as other video streaming options) - part of my wishes the new apple tv were a brushed aluminum 55" LED w/ integrated net apps and facetime.

Well, there's another nail in the coffin of Blu Ray. In a couple of years people are going to be wondering why they spent all of that money on those expensive discs.

The only thing this is a nail in is the coffin of Apple TV. Apple's REMOVED features and capabilities from the old device, such as no more local storage, still only 720p, and you can't BUY only RENT.

FAIL.

Don't talk down to people. Makes you sound like an ass.

As opposed to the OP and many other technically-challenged MacRumors users who think that the only thing a Blu-ray player can do is play Blu-rays and that in five years people will be looking back and wondering why they spent all of $20 on a movie or TV series?

You know just like everyone now is looking back at why they bought all those DVDs ten years ago because they never play them anymore and their DVD player stopped working overnight because YouTube.com appeared?

You can save to your content on your computer and use wi fi to stream to your TV. What is the big deal that you can't save content on your ATV?

Old ATV - I could click buy and watch it on my TV as it downloads.

New ATV - I have to purchase it on my computer and then I have to wait the full 1 and 1/2 - 2 hours for it to download completely then stream it to ATV. :(

And Does this mean that the New ATV wont play the Movie Extras :( I love the DVD Like Menu with extras  That was the reason I started converting from buying DVD/Blu-Ray to buying :apple: Digital Copies. I was actually kind of hoping the Movie Extras would come to the iPad soon along with the iTunes LP's  (I don't really like the LP's on my computer but I think on an iPad it would be way different).

Bring the Extras to the Pad and set it even further apart from competing devices, and shed more light on the extras so more content providers will start providing more content. ;) :apple:

Over All I will not be upgrading my :apple:TV I am sticking with the Buy Button.

So tell me again, how the Apple TV can compete with the WD TV HD Live Plus and other devices?

Why does Apple come out with a great design, superb UI, but ruin the functionality?

I agree with you. I actually own an Apple TV and I love it. So I don't know how much this new Apple TV is going to give me over my old one. I am eyeing the new Google TV and see what is all about. But even with the WD, Roku and Google TV being better and offering more features than Apple TV, I have to say that the integration with iTunes (and other Mac products) is the key. For example, my integration with iTunes for Music, Genius, Remote App on my iPod Touch, My photos from Aperture/iPhoto. It just works! WD is not going to give me that experience. Roku won't either, even though they had many channels, I still want to see my photos (not from Flickr) and listen to my music (not from Pandora). So, to me, there is not reason to buy a new Apple TV and I hope the other solutions out there will suffice what I have with Apple TV. Please Google, do something!!!!
