Apple doesn't care; they have ZERO respect for consumers.

I would say in order for you to make a statement like this, there must be a past concern you have with Apple over their product line or other service that you don't agree with, therefore your bitter negativity results in you chastising Apple by making blanket statement that does not apply to everybody and certainly is false.

Apple doesn't care; they have ZERO respect for consumers.

They are actually the only company I know that do care.
This guy could have very well made it up. Of course, it makes sense that no one was around to see it. Not even a mobile phone camera to film it. I can imagine this guy wanting his story to go viral on the internet. And probably ask for a few millions compensation for the mental damage and all sorts of other troubles he had to go through with this horrific incident.

Another good reason NOT to remove the headphone jack.

Because one set of wireless headphones gave a problem? What about all the others?

If you really believe this - why are you on an Apple fan site?

I used to own a Blackberry that I loved. When I moved to iPhone, I didn’t hang around Blackberry forums saying how **** they were.

Didn't Apple say that the Airpods are not sweat-proof?

I'm betting he was sweating at the gym and the nice conductive salty sweat worked its way inside and shorted things out.

Still, they shouldn't catch freaking fire when this happens. It's a bit scary!
Yeah, that's almost certainly what happened. But if Apple is going to pitch these AirPods to the fitness crowd (and they have been), that can't happen, period. Are they going to suggest you don't sweat when you work out?

Slightly dubious (and not at all an Apple-apologist). Looking at the plastic housing it looks to have been crushed, the plastic is broken into nice pieces, not all melted and scorched. Maybe they were crushed which then damaged the lithium battery?

It looks more like a weight was dropped on them than they caught fire. Provided that pic is of the actual incident, where is the residue from the smoke? Just looks a bit off.

It's really hard to gauge how resistant the Airpods are to moisture. We know they don't have a water resistance rating, but I have read many reports where AirPods have survived being inside a washing machine, in the rain, etc. I only use my AirPods for working out, and when I am threw with them, I wipe them down with a microfiber cloth. I think in most cases, they likely can survive being exposed to moisture being the crevices are so small.

Those don’t look like legit AirPods. The proportions are way off.

If they're not, Apple will want to absolutely take possession of those AirPods for an investigation determine if they are not their product or a third-party product that resembles the AirPods. Even though this is an isolated incident, they won't treat it like that, they will investigate it fully.

My first thought just seeing the picture was that a dog had chewed it, it looked crushed, not burnt/exploded from inside.

With regards to the water resistance, I’ve accidentally put mine through the washing machine for 10 minutes and they still work fine to this day.

Anecdotal sure, but it’s my experience.

What people will do to make a buck...any evidence of fire will be on the piece of equipment.
Actually me being the person to, I am not looking for compensation. I’m Blessed to not have suffered any injuries, but thanks for your concern!

Oh and there is melted plastic and charred burns if your interested, Apple has it and replaced it for me. Thanks.

ya there was no dog at la fitness, the smoke came out of it, and they work fine if exposed to water so sweat wasn’t the issue herex Apple has them so curious to see what they find.

Lol they are AirPods, or Apple wouldn’t already replaced them for me. :)

No weight dropped on them. They have smoke charred on them:
Apple has the video and it’s on my Facebook page showing The plastic is melted

Actually no, I want no compensation. Maybe if they happened to you, you would. Like I said, I am not hurt. I’m fine and Apple replaced them. Case closed. People want there to be drama.

And it wasn’t horrific. Common sense said get an employee and keep it out of my ear. A stupid person would have put it back in and let it explode then want compensation.

Well, if that's really you then I take back what I have said and I do apologise. Glad you are not hurt.

I also thought the proportions looked off at a first glance, they seem shorter/fatter than mine, and I’ve not been able to recreate the picture... perhaps there’s some credibility to the theory that it’s a knockoff?

See Post #39. The owner of the most defective AirPods claims Apple already replaced them for him. I believe they were legitimate.

Being this is an isolated incident, I doubt we will ever know what really happened to cause the AirPods to react the way they did. Unless Apples engineers get back to the original AirPod owner and he reports to this thread.

Our dog‘s quite the same when we leave her alone.

Hey, don‘t you dare
Hey, come back. Now.
Unbelievable!
I totally will... ☄️

Hmm, unless they just sent him some asap as they were worried about the story? Maybe the photo has just been stretched in a weird way, but it does look odd.

Naturally Apple would have a concern in this situation about something that potentially could cause an injury and is a safety risk, but they likely replaced them for him because they want to believe the customer and perhaps they have documentation that he indeed purchased them.

That all may be true, but if they go inside your head and can explode/catch fire, and they're being pitched as workout gear (which implies sweat, especially inside your ears which are blocked from he outside air), that's not enough.

I imagine the next version AirPods will have a water resistance rating. Again, I think every situation will vary and we don't understand the failure behind this set of EarPods.
