Florida resident Jason Colon was listening to his AirPods while at the gym this week when they started to malfunction, and a white smoke allegedly started pouring out.

According to Colon, he then left the AirPods sitting on a piece of gym equipment and ran to get help, and when he got back, one of the AirPods was charred and destroyed.

"It was already like this. It was already popped. I didn't see it happen, but I mean, it was already fried! You can see flame damage," Colon told a local channel 8 news station.

It appears no one else at the gym was around to see what happened to the AirPod, so it's not clear if the device did spontaneously explode. There have been no prior reports of issues with AirPods, but it is not uncommon for iPhones and other devices to see one off battery issues that can result in fire.

According to an Apple spokesperson, Apple is investigating the incident and will be reaching out to Colon to figure out what happened.

Was the final cause sweat?

Someone on a biking group I was on at FB commented that their trainer suffered a smoky and disastrous end after sweat apparently leaked into part of it. They had to leap from the trainer and quickly unplug it and clear their house because the thing had been smoking for some time before they discovered it. Sweat likely conducts electricity very well, so yeah... I thought of sacrificing my original Air Pods, with a dying battery i n one side, but thought the risk for possible sweat issues and the battery weren't worth it. I apparently sweat 'a lot'. *shrug* But sweat is sexy, right? It's supposed to be healthy, at least some believe that...

15 pages of google, and no idea what the rest of the story is. I did see articles about fake Air Pods having meltdowns.

Who knows... Would Apple want to broadcast that their Air Pods are liable to flame out if they were sweat on? Doubtful.

I wonder if there was a lawsuit, but who knows how to find one that would have likely been settled out of court anyway.

Any electrical engineers here?

Serious question: If they can do that, what does that say about the radiation levels that might be running through our heads?

Surely there's got to be some correlation.

What is the relation to power consumption/output to radio frequency output?

Comparing apples and, um, oranges...

The things have a battery. That battery can still cause issues. Sweat likely caused a short, and even possibly a thermal runaway. End result: Smoke, heat, you get your 15+ minutes of fame.

Bluetooth is supposed to be *safe*, because it's blocked by water. *shrug* Cell phones are likely a more direct and long term hazard as far as EMF reception 'cooking your brain'.

I still find the picture to be offputting. The hand and fingers look to be the right scale, but the airpods look shorter and fatter. Even if you angle the airpods and take a pic, there is no angle to create that illusion. Then I thought.....perhaps the pictures is incorrectly scaled, but again....the palm and fingers look correct. So what is the deal with this pic?

I have always found mine to get warm in my ear, at first it bothered me but now I’m used to it. Hope nobody ever has this happen when they are wearing them!

There are realistic looking fakes.

W T F IS THAT!

The new occupant of our nightmares. I've seen some huge bugs. The university I went to had a cock roach set off a mouse trap. Residents of the student housing units would watch the seasonal migration of the roaches to and from the little rivers and streams on campus. The waves of roaches coming and going was horrifying...

If I had one of those appear in my house I’d burn it down, LOL

Omg, there’s sthing wrong with you, :D

I've stepped on Legos in the middle of the night. Dog barf. Cat pee. You get used to it...

I was in Jamaica when I overheard a conversation during breakfast of a father who stepped on a lizard and killed it that morning. (I found an expired lizard in my suitcase when I got home) Their daughter was apparently traumatized, but their young son was enthralled with the poor ex-lizard's eyes, which were popped out of its crushed head. 'COOL DAD!!!' and the wife and daughter slowly turned green. The daughter's eyes red from crying about 'The poor lizard!'. I so tried hard not to laugh...

He flushed the poor thing, and the daughter wanted a funeral for it. You just can't make that stuff up. The poor dad. He stepped in that, he did... 😯😆😆😆 What a way to ruin a family vacation.😂🤣😂🤣
