In an internal document obtained by MacRumors, Apple has acknowledged an issue with some iPhone 12 displays exhibiting flickering, a green or gray glow, or other unintended lighting variations under some conditions.

In the document, shared with Apple Authorized Service Providers this week, Apple says that it is aware of customer reports related to this issue and is investigating. Apple has advised technicians to avoid servicing affected iPhones, at least for now, and instead inform customers that they should keep their iPhone up to date with the latest iOS version. This guidance suggests that Apple may be confident that it can fix the issue in a future software update.

A similar green tinted display issue affected some iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max models, and Apple was able to fix it in iOS 13.6.1.

There have been complaints about this new issue in the MacRumors forums and Apple Support Communities since shortly after iPhone 12 models launched. The issue can affect the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Based on customer reports, the issue appears to occur when the display brightness is set to around 90% or lower. Many users are experiencing the issue on iOS 14.1, iOS 14.2, and seemingly even the first two iOS 14.3 betas. The flickering or glowing is not always persistent, disappearing after a short time for some customers.

If and when the issue is addressed, or we learn more, we'll update this article accordingly.

Same issue here, iPhone 12 pro.

Just watched this video, didn’t think anything was wrong with my display.... but when I switched it off/on in a dark room there was a definite glow from the screen, which in my eyes being an OLED screen should be solid black when the logo is displayed.

Lets hope there is a fix coming

The only reason this is not collection more discussion, is that most people don't know how to see it. Every iPhone 12 has it. But as it can only be seen watching black background (movie or picture) in total darkness with brightness set to lower than 90%, many won't see it, unless they look for it. Also, people coming from a LCD panel, won't know the benefits with OLED, and that this is a total no-go. Really hoping this to be a software issue, and can be solved with a panel driver update.

I am experiencing this on my iPhone 12 Pro Max. There’s green light bleeding from the top right corner. Started noticing it after upgrading to 14.2.1.

Really hoping Apple fixes this with a software update.

Well so much for thinking I escaped this display issue.
Went into a completely dark room, no light what so ever. Yeah, his video tip confirmed it. I don't THINK its as severe as some other posts.

I get a few brief flashes of the green glow on boot up, then it immediately shows the "Clock, wallpaper, Swipe Up to unlock"

Then downloaded an all black blank picture. The brightness under about 60% will show the glow coming from the top, then goes away after about 3, 4 seconds - screen totally jet black as it should be.

The lower the brightness, the longer that green glow stays. Using the black photo again, around 30% screen brightness, the green glow remains longer, abut 8-9 seconds before disappearing.

Screen brightness at the lowest possible setting, the glow remained, didn't go away.
*At 100% brightness, no glow at all.

Perhaps not horrible compared to others, but knowing its there - and IDK if it will get worse? - seriously irks me!

So...A, I kinda wish I didn't know I had a problem.
BUT B, it does looks like most - if not all of us have the problem.
🤦🏻‍♂️

I guess launch day is too early for Apple products, they have to mature.

have it on my 12 pro Max 🤷‍♂️
Don’t know if I should send it back or wait for an update

The thing that makes me think it isn’t software and more panel related is that I’ve currently got 3 iPhone 12 Pro Max’s here and only 1 of them (build week 41) displays the flickering and green on boot. The other two (week 47) don’t and they are all running 14.2.1 so if software related why don’t they all display (pun) the same issue?
The week 47 devices do have defects. The rim and screen on one of them isn’t flush at all and you can see the contacts behind the screen and the other screen is not uniform - yellow hue bottom left. It’s a mess and a joke for the money they are asking.

The fact that not everybody have the issue makes me think it is a hardware defect

100%. I have 3 iPhone 12 Pro Max’s here with me. One of them flickers in low light when displaying blacks the others don’t. The one that flickers flashes like this upon reboot in a dark room for a second or so:

I guess the best way is to order a new one, check it when it arrives and return the defect unit

I have cancelled my M1 MBP order, I guess they should clear things up with my first 1200 Euro purchase before I Pay 1400 more 😅

Yeah, I noticed this while I was playing Among Us; in between screens, the screen is usually black, which presents weird flickering. Haven’t noticed any green tint, but the flickering on pure black/near black screens is noticeable.

I also tried this Dolby Cinema trailer; I get some very weird flickering/color issues in this video as well.

Thank you for sharing this video. I played it and I did not get any weird flickering, but I did notice that during the video where it says "this is true black" I did not get true black, but the borders or the side black bars were true black. If I made the video cover the entire screen, it does not show true black again and if I make it smaller, the borders turn true black. This gives me hope that this might be a software issue and I won't have to get a refund and try my luck on a different phone. Though I might have just gotten a pretty decent one.

Apple:

”Looks like your eyes need some help. Buy the new Glass!”

”Starting at $499 without a Prescription”

”But with a Prescription, it’s $599! That’s what glasses are for! Also, they fix your eyes’ uncontrollable love for the color green!”

Thanks for sharing. I only noticed flickering in landscape mode when I touch my screen too see the “control buttons” and then get one flickering on the black side bars on the left and the right. I do not see it in portrait mode.
However I see flickers on the entire screen when playing a black video another poster shared.

I am also hoping they can fix it with a SW update.

I am having issues with my iPhone 12 display as well. On a lighter background, specifically white background, when the display dims to about 10%-20% there is a darker/blue tint along the notch part of the display and the upper right corner. It seems like the brighter the display gets the less you can see it. I took it into apple today and was told this is likely part of the issue apple is looking into.
