Don't own any apple watch but can't you just turn of wifi?

If you're walking somewhere without your phone, you can just turn it off and then back on when you know you're going to use wifi?

Glad I stuck to my "don't preorder" policy.

Except I preordered the ATV4k. Maybe I won't open the box for a few weeks.

This is really strange to see. I mean, I imagine Apple has been testing these LTE watches in the wild. Had they not run into these issues that all of the reviewers are mentioning?

Similar things with me - if I'm out in my car in the driveway, the phone sometimes clings to my home wifi - which is unusable, and won't switch to cellular.

Then at work, I work near the Canadian/American border, It will switch from AT&T (US) to Rogers (CA) occasionally, and never give up Rogers, even if Rogers has 1 bar and AT&T has 5. I'm guessing if AT&T has a glitch where it's down for 1 second, it switches over to something it can get a signal on, and holds that until it loses a signal.

Ha, I'm just on the other side of that border and frequently my iPhone will do the same thing (switching to AT&T even though the signal is weaker where I am). Always gets messy switching back and forth.

No. At least not hat I've ever seen. Wifi on the watch is something that Apple has not really explained in great detail. It's a lot of black box tech, IMHO, that works with the iPhone to get connections and talk to its host iPhone across networks to which they are both connected. I can only tell that my watch connects to my home network by looking at the router logs.

So, this is how "LTE" works on this, by actively searching and hopping onto open wifi networks  Busted :p

Looking forward to testing LTE out myself. If it doesn’t work then I’ll just return it. Pretty simple to me.

3 months free of LTE service from the carriers makes more sense now lol Apple knew it was a problem from the jump.

When did I miss that Apple Music was not going to be available at launch!?!?

Exactly. It's incredibly annoying. The iPhone just grabs any wifi including those protected by password portals. You have to deliberately disable wifi, even with "Ask To Join" enabled. I end up just turning off wifi and forgetting about it for weeks on end.

Hope the Watch fix comes in quick!
Say what? My iPhone never connects to an unknown network. I think you want to set your Ask to Join networks to 'Off". That way is will only connect to networks that are already known and if only unknown networks are near by, then you'll have to manually select a network. The only time I need to turn off wifi is when it connects to a bum network, like at the gym where it is crowded and the meager router that they use can't feed all the cell phones their YouTube streams. Then I switch off wifi and use the more capable LTE network (and take the data hit).

That said, yes, my iPhone will hang on to wifi longer than it should then get stuck in a 'quiet' mode until it can convince itself to move on. Mostly this happens when LTE is weak in the area. When LTE is booming, it seems quite happy to make the switch.

I will try that. Thanks.

Well done the Verge in spotting this and mentioned it in their review.

I’m unsurprised that shills like Gruber and Dalrymple make no mention of it at all - which is a genuine disservice to their readers.

I must be missing something. I have had “Ask to Join” turned off since iPhone 1. And I never have the issue you guys are describing. Even if it didn’t drop the LTE connex (have not seen that), I couldn’t stand the constant prompts asking me to join a wifi network. If I need wifi I will do it myself. What am I missing?

LOL, and that is why since Tim COOCK is in power I stopped updating software or buying hardware. There is always something broken at the release day. Usually I update software when the patches start to be released. I buy hardware only after ifixit takes them apart. I'm not bothered, because I expect next generation to have Face time.

If this is a widespread issue, Apple will fix and we cant be too shocked since its a first gen issue. Sucks but it happens. Seriously, where has tolerance gone? Do most of you expect absolute perfection in your own actions? I seriously doubt it- It's easy to mouth off disapproval online.

The blog writer didn't do herself any favors by playing the victim role though. If her "I didn't do anything wrong" comment was born out of a past full of second guessing against her, well either she is in the wrong business or she earned it. Either way, get that s___ out of "journalism".

I'm not. Apple has a return policy, and I'd rather have the item in my hands with the choice to return it then be waiting weeks for it instead.

The only time this is a problem for me is with my cable provider's wifi networks that are everywhere, and I'm driving. But it's working as intended, it's trying to connect to a wifi network on my "list" (i just end up turning off "Auto-join" on that network).

I respect that. I'd just prefer to let the dust settle before shelling out.

Having said that, I preordered the ATV4k (late in the day like a sucker). We'll see how that goes...

My phone does this.

My work place has wifi I’ll often walk away or to the bathroom and Have to turn off wifi on m phone during the walk because it struggles to load, as it desperately tries to cling to the wifi.

I have wifi assist turned on and still doesn’t help. They need maybe a time out. Once 5-10 seconds has passed use LTE.

you should be contacting I.T. (not Penny btw, lol) about this. Someone has installed a local hotspot and most likely shouldn't have. It's funny though.

Wasn't it Windows 98? :)

It was Windows 98, and it didn't just freeze. The presentation was for a computer that was running Windows 98 and connecting a printer via USB and BOOM Blue Screen of Death.

Then the initial surface debut ...

IE fails, cannot show Windows Store, or Games, keep pressing the Windows Start icon button ... nadda occurs lol. Surface is great for hiding the screen when it freezes lol.

Preordered the 4k too- granted, that's probably a much less precarious move- much more simple device, SoC already in use for months, etc. And not a huge cash outlay for an Apple device.

+1.

Whenever I fly on a WiFi equipped plane, I have to turn the WiFi off on my iPhone 6 or the LTE doesn't pick up when I turn off airplane mode. This also happens before leaving the gate if they turn on the WiFi early. The phone connects to he airplane's WiFi and then waits for the log in/authentication and it gums up the LTE.

Actually, thinking about this, the airplane WiFi problem is related to a known network.

I occasionally use the WiFi on the airplane (for internet or just entertainment access) so this is a know network that requires an odd log-in. On United, for example, you have to connect to WiFi (which happens automatically), open their app and then log in through a webpage. I suspect that this extra step in the log in process is where the iPhone hangs up.

This then kills the LTE until I turn off the WiFi.

I don't have this problem where it is an unknown network as my phone doesn't try to log in.

If Lauren's remarks during the liveblog from the apple presentation are any indication, then it's probably her own fault somehow.

Well, she missed the non-lte version of the Apple Watch 3 and kept complaining about how if you wanted a non-lte Apple Watch you had to take the gen 1 because they discontinued the gen 2.
Furthermore she's the kind of person who can't go 5 minutes without bitching about Trump which is really ****ing weird in a liveblog from Apple's keynote.
