I'm quite sure Apple would have got better and more reliable connectivity with lower power usage if they would have used Qualcomm LTE modems instead of Intel.

Actually, thinking about this, the airplane WiFi problem is related to a known network.

I occasionally use the WiFi on the airplane (for internet or just entertainment access) so this is a know network that requires an odd log-in. On United, for example, you have to connect to WiFi (which happens automatically), open their app and then log in through a webpage. I suspect that this extra step in the log in process is where the iPhone hangs up.

This then kills the LTE until I turn off the WiFi.

I don't have this problem where it is an unknown network as my phone doesn't try to log in.

FWIW
DLM

That is exactly what their issue sounds like. They probably connected to the in-flight wifi (i.e. GoGo) once upon a time.

They need to go into Settings > Wifi > tap the network name (of the auto-connected one they don't want), and select 'forget this network' or toggle off the 'auto-join'.

If they are syncing their settings via iCloud and have macOS, they can also go into their computer's settings > Network settings and see all of their known wifi ssid's listed and easily delete the ones they don't want to connect to there as well.

Apple should be focussed on fixing immediately. Once major media picks this issue up, it will hurt sales.

Ah good, LTE doesn't work AND carriers want you to fork over $10 a month for it.

Should be a free service. You've simply spent upwards to $800 on a device that can access data youve already paid for...

Jeeez. Another SNAFU.

It's a separate provisioned LTE device with its own number. It only masquerades as your cell phone number by network techniques behind the scene (e.g. ATT NumberSync). This is just like iPads, although you do not need to use NumberSync on those if you do not want to, and they are $10/mos. So ATT will provision and manage another LTE device on their network and you think that they should be giving this service away for free?

"not-wearing-it-wrong"

:):p:D

Not sure why he needed to add that. Takes away some credibility when he needs to bring up the non-existent past like that.

LTE works fine. Don't twist the facts.

Okay, well then as I currently pay $8.33 a month for my iPad LTE service which provides me with FULL INTERNET, tell me why I should pay $10 a month for a couple iMessages, light music streaming, and Siri? And say what you will, this costs carriers close to nothing.

Maybe ~$3 a month would be fair for the actual benefit? But offering the service free would have longer term benefits for the carrier than trying to gouge this burgeoning revenue stream.

At least this bug isn't as bad as Face ID

Face ID worked exactly the way it was supposed to during that event. It locked Craig out and forced him to enter his password after workers moved his iPhone multiple times and accidentally triggered Face ID.

Handoff is hard. It’s true for phones it will be equallly if not more so for the watch. The user experience won’t be what the buyer expects and if they can live with that then they will keep it. Personally I don’t really need it (I’ve already commented enough on not wanting the radio on my wrist) and I’m not interested in paying 200$ more in the first year to have it.

Say what? My iPhone never connects to an unknown network. I think you want to set your Ask to Join networks to 'Off". That way is will only connect to networks that are already known and if only unknown networks are near by, then you'll have to manually select a network. The only time I need to turn off wifi is when it connects to a bum network, like at the gym where it is crowded and the meager router that they use can't feed all the cell phones their YouTube streams. Then I switch off wifi and use the more capable LTE network (and take the data hit).

That said, yes, my iPhone will hang on to wifi longer than it should then get stuck in a 'quiet' mode until it can convince itself to move on. Mostly this happens when LTE is weak in the area. When LTE is booming, it seems quite happy to make the switch.

The problem is a little bit different than this. For example on an airline network, united Wi-Fi or say gogo, it’s a known network and therefore even if the “ask to join networks“ is set to off it will still attach automatically to these‘ known‘ networks. At the time the networks haven’t been authenticated through their portal and therefore no true connectivity to the Internet is enabled and therefore the device, be at the phone or the watch which is connected to the phone via Bluetooth is thinking that it’s connected but there is actually no connectivity. The lte watch is probably playing some similar form of this game

My phone does this.

My work place has wifi I’ll often walk away or to the bathroom and Have to turn off wifi on m phone during the walk because it struggles to load, as it desperately tries to cling to the wifi.

I have wifi assist turned on and still doesn’t help. They need maybe a time out. Once 5-10 seconds has passed use LTE.

This +1,000. Probably the most annoying bug/biggest gripe I have with iOS currently. Same goes for loading directions in the driveway at the house.

Xfinity WiFi is my nemesis on my iPhone. Occasionally I will use their WiFi when out in public or have no cell access -- so it is a known network -- but it is so prevalent (thanks to every customer offering it via their router whether they like it or not) so its more or less impossible for me to drive around with a working phone if I don't turn WiFi off. Calculating directions, using Apple Music, texts -- they all fail because the phone is trying desperately to connect to that xfinity Hotspot I just drove by. I try and forget the network regularly but inevitably I still end up using it and it once again joins the list of trusted networks. I had not considered how this same issue might impact my new Apple Watch that arrives Friday.. ugh. Lets hope Apple can really fix this.

“Any Apple Watch with heart rate sensors will now record your resting heart rate, your average walking heart rate, your recovery heart rate, and, if you opt in, any spikes in heart rate that occur when the Watch thinks you’re not working out.”

I can confirm through Apple employee last night on Apple support chat that this is not true. Only series 3 will let you know resting heart rate, walking heart rate, recovery heart rate and spike in year rate. Was rather sad about this news considering it’s been advertised like it’s for all models.

I can confirm that my Series 2 w/ watchOS 4 is currently tracking resting rate and walking average. Not seeing recovery and spike in the app but that may be because I only recently upgraded to watchOS 4 or those two metrics are truly only for Series 3.

Edit: In the settings, I'm also able to specify when I want to get notified of an elevated heart rate by selecting from a set number of BPM's.

I don't think this will hurt sales at all. When you have those who frequent tech sites, they are likely aware of the issue because of such. However any normal consumer that wants to pre-order the Series 3 Apple Watch or purchase In store for themselves or whoever, will have no idea about this connectivity issue. It's simply rectified by a patch. It's just a matter of when.

Ive been seeing all of these for the past week, on Series 2 with latest GM WatchOS 4

No question, but its a lot easier to just hit cancel, then go through the return process
Cmon there are plenty of apple stores in our area.

You know as soon as that pretty brown box shows up you'll cave and keep it.
Which model did you get?
Maybe keep it and I will buy it from you, cash...
