Seems to be happening on my iPhone 13 Mini too after the iOS 16 RC. It freezes and becomes unresponsive for around 10-30 seconds and then becomes okay. Not sure if related.

Happening on my 13 Pro Max as well. It is not a thing of the new iPhones, it is mostly the software release.

Sad fact is many, probably most iPhone owners do not own a Mac or Windows computer. I agree with your method, but I too am ”old.”

Apple has for about ten years now made it so that a computer is not required for setup, most people move from phone to phone like hermit crabs. It’s never going to be as reliable. But I think the age of most people owning a proper computer is over.

I just hope the day doesn’t come that Apple decides that number is too few to be worth it and discontinues the functionality. They’ll probably never remove it from the Mac, but Windows could be another story.
I used WiFi, but I also had backups on my MB Pro as a fall back. No issues

I was in the process of doing that at the Apple Store but realized I had 40+ minutes to go and had to go to work so I canceled it.

Restored via iCloud backup on the car ride back to work and all is well.

The BEST way? That'd be to complete an encrypted backup of your 13 Pro to your computer via Finder, and then restoring your 14 Pro from that backup. It is by far the longest process for data transfer, but in the long run, it helps significantly cut down on the time you spend re-logging into apps, re-syncing data to apps, etc. on your 14 Pro.
Definitely not the best way. I tried all methods of restoring over the years and the recently added iPhone to iPhone quick start is the absolute smoothest and best way. Been using it for my last 2 device changes and haven't had a single issue yet. It's literally putting your old phone down and picking your new phone up with a 1:1 identical copy of the content, no nasty app logouts or credential prompts: it just works.

The article is a bummer though. The device to device transfer worked smoothly here though last friday.

My phone froze three times yesterday and it was incredibly frustrating. Each time, I was using navigation in Apple Maps and trying to drive at the same time. The individual apps were unresponsive, including Settings, Phone, and Maps, and force quitting each of them multiple times had no effect. I have never experienced this on any iPhone going back 15 years. Thought maybe my phone was defective but glad to hear it’s a known issue Apple is investigating. For all those here that said they haven’t had the issue, I wonder if it only presents when using Apple Maps for navigation, as that appears to be what triggered it for me.
Well, being that using Apple Maps to locate my daughters house (I'm visiting) right out of the gate after buying my 14 Pro Max, and had no problem (I've used AM a total of 6 times now since getting the phone) would indicate it's not Maps... I've had no problems whatsoever. I feel lucky after reading all these reports.

Mine worked great Friday as well except it did freeze for about 8-10mins. It was fine after that.

However the quick start phone to phone is not completely complete for everything. As much as I hate to use the gmail app, I use it for authentication of my Google accounts only and none of those accounts were signed in at all. 8 accounts I had to sign in to. No biggie, but it’s the one I do remember always being a pain for me with that process that’s supposed to be no sign ins required.

With all due respect; you have no idea what you’re talking about. Data corruption is not the issue here. The entire back end process for backing up and restoring in iCloud is less reliable, less secure, and less useful. The one benefit it has is that it’s set-it-and-forget-it stupid easy, and runs by itself.
What in the world are are you referring to about wired transfers to new computers? I have never in my life seen someone try to migrate an entire OS installation from one PC to another using a USB cable. I don’t even think that’s possible.
Anyone remember Firewire? I don’t store in the cloud. Local backups on floppies, tapes, portable drives, older computers.

We had to delete the esim data and find someone at Verizon should could get me to data to input the esim in manually. And that took SEVEN hours.
I also had to hook this phone up to my Mac mini and restore it twice before the new esim data even took hold.

And the customer support at Verizon said I wasn’t the only one having this issue. The dozen support agents a delt with all told me the same thing.
“ Today is a mess, and it’s only iPhones “
You win the award for absolute worst activation experience. It did not just work.

I also did phone to phone - in my car! - and the transfer completed with no issues.

Luckily I didn't experience any glitch this time around going from 13 Pro to 14 Pro except for my own step skipping mistake.

Applied this update before doings secure restoring from iTunes. Yet still a lot of accounts and their cookies were lost and I had to login to a lot of apps and set up WiFi and Bluetooth.
