Yep. And people are going to love paying YSL or Versace $hundreds just for an iWatch cover.

Lets be honest, some people would pay for a rock with an Apple symbol on it.

Those brands will appeal to someone.
They appeal to me but not the wallet, and that has last say.

Here's to hoping it looks amazing and nothing like the mockups.

No matter what it looks like, a bunch of people will flock to the forums to complain about how ugly it is. Until it actually ships and people start talking about how beautiful it is.

This is known, this is inevitable.

I would recommend checking out 9to5mac's article on known Apple execs, key hires etc regarding this. (Article is missing Musa Tariq, Monier, Newson)

http://9to5mac.com/2014/07/08/from-...-hires-a-pair-of-key-nike-fuelband-engineers/

They've got Leadership, Fitness, Fashion and Health all in on this. So we're going to see all of those Tuesday for sure. This looks iPhone Project Purple big.

I'd imagine we'll see LVMH, Kering, and other groups looking into this with interest - the big fashion houses can have big investments in guess what - luxury, sport & lifestyle. So it's Fitness, Fashion, Health and more. They went and cherry picked some interesting people (see above article). Some we know:

Former CEO at YSL - Deneve
Former CEO at Burberry - Ahrendts DBE
Former Former VP at LVMH fashion house, Marketing and Sales at Tag Heuer - Pruniaux
Former Social Media Chief/Digital Marketing Director Burberry & Nike - Tariq
Former EU Retail Head at YSL - Monier

This isn't a novelty. Apple has poured literally millions into this ($85 million just to get Bob Mansfield to do 2 more years, Forstall went). They've got degrees, C-level positions. A Knight Commander (Ive) and a Dame Commander (Ahrendts). Former Nike Fuelband engineers. Ex-Director's of Nike's R&D lab. Sleep experts, sensor experts (glucose, blood etc - just view what Healthkit covers). It's a team over a 100.

Healthkit doesn't look to be half-baked - they've put a lot into this. Looks like a lot more has gone into Healthkit than imagined. They've stocked up on fitness and health experts. http://9to5mac.com/2013/07/18/apple-stacks-iwatch-team-with-sensor-fitness-experts/ Mobile health and fitness tracking is going to skyrocket.

Apple is known to take a while to make API's - they're a hard thing to do right. And it looks like they've done their homework.
Samsung's is going to have to do more than vague handwaving to catchup, if Google's behind Apple. If they can bring together 3rd parties to feed into this, they've got a winner.

Project Purple level? "The sensor field is going to explode." Tim Cook D11.
"I think wearables are incredibly interesting. I think it could be a profound area for technology."
"I think there are lots of things to solve in this space."
"It's an area ripe for exploration"
"You have to convince someone it's so incredible"
"The whole sensor field is going to explode. It's already exploding. It's a little all over the place right now. With the arc of time, I think it will become clear.

Apple's done patents from at least 2009 on sports (Search patentlyapple.com for "Sports" - there are dozens on sensors, tech, wearables, work with Nike people, all sorts). Flexible LED patents, sensor patents all sorts. Wonder what comes out. Imagine if their announcement was as strong as WWDC? Healthkit, Homekit and more. "It all looks ready to go"

Some Healthkit options
Diagnostics: Number of Times Fallen, Galvanic Skin Response, Body Heat Flux
● Fitness: Body Mass Index, Body Fat Percentage, Height, Body Mass, Lean Body Mass, Distance, Calories, Activity Count, Flights Climbed, Steps, Basal Calories, NikeFuel
● Lab Results: Blood Glucose, Blood Alcohol Content, Perfusion Index
● Medication: Inhaler Usage
● Nutrition: Total Fat, Polyunsaturated Fat, Monounsaturated Fat, Saturated Fat, Cholesterol, Sodium, Carbohydrates, Fiber, Sugar, Calories, Protein, Vitamin A, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Vitamin K, Calcium, Iron, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Folate, Biotin, Pantothenic Acid, Phosphorus, Iodine, Magnesium, Zinc, Selenium, Copper, Manganese, Chromium, Molybdenum, Chloride, Potassium
● Sleep: Sleep Analysis
● Vital Signs: Heart Rate, Oxygen Saturation, Blood Pressure, Respiratory Rate, Body Temperature, RR Interval

All this and they're transitioning from Objective C to Swift?

Fashion is far more important than tech.

The world of tech if far smaller than the world of fashion.

Say what? I don't see too many fashion companies in the Fortune 500. There sure are an awful lot of tech companies on that list, though. And most companies have a Chief Technology Officer. Don't know of any with a Chief Fashion Officer.

Indeed.

The whole point of tech is as a tool to attain social status, which fashion defines.

There's a reason nerds have such low social status compared to high fashion people.

I had no idea. I always thought tech was more about improving modern life.

That's because you represent unfashionable people.

Fashionable people do not wish to be associated with your kind.

Apple's goal is to create a product that is bought by millions of people. Since the world of douchebags who think they are superior to others because they spend an outsized percent of their paycheck on fashionable clothing is fairly small, Apple is going to have to target the unfashionable masses that you look down upon. Sorry about that.

To be honest..

When you see these mockups people have made, imagined and drooled over:

I can't help but feel there is going to be one hell of a lot of disappointied people when they see the real thing.

Myself, I really REALLY want to be blown away, and think Apple can make something that Samsung, LG, Motorola etc etc can't make, however I will admit, I'm bracing myself for "oh, is that it?"

Again, I so so hope I'm wrong and I am blown away

Wow, some of these are quite nice! I had not seen most of these before, and could happily live with some of them.
I'm gonne have faith in Ive to amaze us once again.

WOW. If Apple sold that white one, it would instantly be a hit/fashion statement. Especially if the Apple logo was backlit, and doubled as the notification light. Or if they made it like the battery status lights on the macbook pro wherein it looks like solid metal, but lights up from behind the surface.

Watch the even on Tuesday. If anything like the white one is announced, start buying that stock while it is under $100.

They are doing it local for security and logistics reasons. This is also why the Mac was launched at the Flint Center; just a few blocks from the Apple campus.

Anyone check out the Apple parking lot this weekend? How crowded is it?

Dude, it already happened. Apple has one of the most iconic brands. Surprised the new Niner stadium is not "Apple Stadium" instead of "Levi's Stadium."

Apple has been a brand people like others to know they own, and thus a fashion for quite a while. Design, Apple's specialty and fashion are closely related, so Its even a miracle this hasn't happened before.

Tech firms going full tilt into fashion and interior home would be revolutionary, nobody has really done it before. A mix of Ikea and Apple :).

Hard sell to people who wouldn't want to be seen wearing the same stuff as everyone else...what woman would like to walk into a room and see 10 others wearing the same thing she has on?...what teen would wear the same fashion. As his father? Its going to have to be replaceable bands of some kind.. Maybe keep the bands and toss the device out every 2 years. Either way
It just makes it more stuff to buy that has nothing to do with the actual device. Remember that the actual watch or device will be obsolete as they put out new ones, so if the bands are replaceable at least you can keep those and pop a new face in.

Yes, different people having different opinions is a common phenomenon.

My point was that the loud critics will suddenly disappear once the design becomes more familiar.

Before release: "It's so ugly!!!!!"

After release: Such elegant. Much beauty. Wow

You have that right. IMO, we have a huge new retailing opportunity that can displace traditional electronic retailers. Something like the hot geek girl store with tech support for your iPhone, iWatch and latest fashions.

People thought the impressionist paintings were fracking ugly when they came out too.... Van Gogh sold nothing while garish academic painters sold plenty. Which ones are seen as beautiful these days?

the definiton of "uglyness" is highly peer and culturally dependent because it is not only defined by your view of the objects, but also by the view of others from your social circle ro the whole of society.

This leads to many types of things we would now term as horrible being seen as attractive in their time. A type of mass delusion.

Classicaly beautiful things tend to have simpler lines, which would tend to depend less on finicky fashion tastes.

Unfortunately for you, the world is run by the superior douchebags, not the inferior commoners.

There's a reason advertisers use celebrities supermodels to sell their products, instead of your next-door neighbor.

It's because you love the superior douchebag's social power, and would like to be them.

You do that, because you, and all the other commoners, hate being a commoner with low social status, and want to be a superior douchebag instead.

Socially outcast nerds do not know these rules of power.

Yeah it's a normal thing for different people to have different opinions.

i hope its more of a band display curved display (which it's tipped to have) more like a band instead of a watch with a nice curved OLED screen

I dunno guys

I think the whole iWatch paradigm is completely wrong.

I suspect it will be a fashion accessory you wear, that may also happen to tell the time. But if Apple want to pull off something special. it won't look anything like a watch as we know.

The strap mock ups may be closer to the mark than the mock up on this post.

having a variety of band and face options

i'm sure i'm not the first to think of this, but it would seem the move to translucence in iOS8 would benefit the iWatch with color matching backgrounds —*maybe even the whole thing translucent in a way that allows the light to come out from different angles and maybe a way to sense what the person is wearing so it would match. even just a camera that sees what your wearing.

anyhoo, that would be pretty cool from a fashion sense.

That is a very interesting theory and all, but have you bothered to think it through? Barack Obama is the most powerful man on the planet at the moment and he wears dad jeans. Running the world and devotion to fashion don't have much in common.

If I could pick three people to invite over to dinner between Jesus Christ, Justin Bieber, Kim Kardashian, Mahatma Ghandi, Vanilla Ice and Mother Teresa, I would go for the three who spent the least amount of money on their wardrobe.
