I go back to the early 1970's when it comes to computers. It continues to amuse me the Apple Fans vs Crab Apple wars. I know is it futile to think this is going to change so all I can do smile at the children participating in it.

Coming from where I am a dawn man with computers I see the vast potential in the iPad. I will get one but I am going wait until the smoke clears. I am hospital administrator and we are looking at the iPad as a replacement for practitioners clip boards. A clinician being able to view a patient complete medical file, including Xray films, echo's, cardiology graphics, etc in a secured device in the hand will be great time saver.

You obviously haven't seen many of my posts. Of course you seem to now be playing the guilt card on me. Did it ever strike you as odd the Marcus was ready to post the moment he saw this thread begin, but he claims to have no interest in the product. Does that appear to be the behavior of a person who truly doesn't care? It's simple psychology. If someone really didn't care they wouldn't bother trolling up a thread the day the device comes out. The time for such comments was back when the device was revealed. He clearly has interest in the iPad, so I pointed that out and gave two examples of why he might be feeling the need to behave like he was. Of course you chose to cling to one of the examples I gave, so you could play up how cruel and "crass" I am. Please. Save your outrage for your greenpeace blog.

What exactly do you know about psychology? Is it simple to you or do you just like abusing people then hiding behind some quasi-cerebral BS? Did it ever occur to you that Marcus is perhaps deeply disappointed with this new product? Or did you just jump to the conclusion that he's poor and resentful? I'm no psychologist either but maybe that says more about you than it does him. You might not have noticed but there are quite a few people on this board who feel this way. As I type there are 80 positives and 66 negative clicks on this article so I'd say there's a sizable chunk of MR readers with an issue here. Are they all poor and jealous of your American status? I did enjoy the Greenpeace stuff, not sure how environmental campaigners fit in there in your genius arguement although it made me certain that you truely are just a spoilt little child.

My Best Buy had small line out front. Had 40 each kind per employee. They handed out vouchers, so got one and left for breakfast because they would be in at 5pm today When I finished eating and returned to Best Buy just to look at the demos, they said they did have them, but no accessories. Went ahead and picked my 32G up. Wonder if there was a line at the Apple store.

When I tuned it on, it prompted to plug I to iTunes.

Gonna head to Apple store to see what's going on there and buy accessories.

any hope of finding one today?

Is there any hope of walking into either an Apple Store today or a Best Buy and buying an IPad, or are they all spoken for? Anyway to find out where there still is inventory?

Yes, I just did. Go to Best Buy now though!

It still amazes me that Apple is releasing a gimped product. A product that could easily today have a camera, and usb ports, and multitasking, but doesn't because if they add those features 2 years later, they can make more money. It's pretty sad. A product that easily could have been the device for techies and casuals, but nope. We just get a large iPod with some new apps.

It shouldn't amaze you that much.

Multitasking is purely software related, which is most likely released with the upcoming iphone update in June/July. You shouldn't be too surprised that they held back such a big software release for the iphone. Otherwise, what could they do when they release the iPhone besides show off fancy new hardware?

The camera is quite useless on the back to take photos. I understand your reasoning that it should be on the front of the iPad, but there's simply only a niche market group of people that would actually use Skype or some application to make conference calls and that require seeing the other person.

USB ports is simply useless in this version simply because the current OS doesn't have a good method of supporting them. Just like multitasking is purely software, USB ports is also in a way, since there's no system for moving files to them or saving files onto the iPad. Allowing the iPad to have a "Save to USB" context menu when you tap and hold onto documents or pictures in different applications is simply difficult and not user friendly. And only allowing USB's to transfer music and photos to the iPhone (like an SD card) defeats the purpose of a USB. (Which is to transfer any files)

Basically, the things you are worrying about may be important, but simply stating that Apple could "easily" have added them is not true. The ease of use of both "multitasking" and "USB" depend on the software, which has not been updated to allow such tasks to become easy and user friendly. Maybe after the iPhone is released and we see a more advanced UI that supports "desktop-like" interaction with the iPhone and the iPad, will we eventually see USB ports that pop up a USB icon on the screen that you can drag files to. (Which makes much more sense for a USB).

Ordinary people want to play games on facebook, but won't be able to because Jobs decides how a user can use an apple product instead of a the user deciding what they want to do with it.

Woops. What about Mafia Wars? It doesn't seem to be built on Flash but it doesn't work on my iPod Touch, either.

Watching Flash cartoons on the iPad would have been cool. Video iChats would have been cool. Maybe later.

I'm eager to see what bugs/hardware issues might arise with our early adopter guinea pigs' iPads.

Helllooooo iPad

The store was great, the iPad is beautiful and quick and luscious. :D

Got the 16 gig with the case. Attended the little workshop afterwards and it was and is a phenomenal experience. The Gardens Mall Apple store was great and had plenty of stock and by noon had just about whittled down their line. We probably had about 100 to 150 people in total and they had plenty of iPads even with people walking out with 2 or 3. I'm syncing everything up now and can't wait to play well into the night!!

Everyone enjoy their new iPad :apple:

Blah? How can anybody be "deeply disappointed" about something he never saw or touched or experienced?? THAT's really bs.
One could only feel sooooo disappointed if you'd have had the highes hopes and expectations... and not claiming to have no interest in it....

So it's ok to be excited by the iPad even though you've never touched or experienced it? Turn your argument around and it falls apart. Keep trying though champ.

hey guys anyone know how much RAM the iPad has in it? sorry if someone already said, I didnt feel like reading through all 140 comments... I checked ifixit's teardown and I think it said 2GB, is that right? if so it should be able to handle multitasking like a champ...

Not quite.
It's reasonable to be excited about something can be offered for sale commercially that you think will make your life easier.

It's childish to sulk that it won't cram everything you could possibly dream of and give it away for fivepence.

See? It's all a matter of how realistic your expectations are.

When did I ever mention money as a problem? Or did you just crowbar that in to prop up your argument?
As far as realistic expectations go; I have an iPhone that does the same as this thing but with a smaller screen, was it really inconceivable to hope for something a little more than screen real estate? It'll make life easier? Sure, you won't have to squint as much, but that's it.

You're not the first sucker to the hype, but in your quieter moments, in the next few days when you're sitting with your brand new big-ass iPod, you may just come to realise the things you cant do with the iPad. And when you grudgingly put down your new iPad and turn to your laptop to carry out those simple tasks, that sound you hear will be Steve Jobs and Co laughing their asses off. Because you just paid $500 for something that won't even let you print. Because they just told the techno-world that this "magical" device will change its very fabric when all it did was shift some glorified e-readers. That, my friend, is the genius of Apple.

When did I ever mention money as a problem?

Its not necessary, just a reminder that reality plays a role in reasonable expectations.

Its reasonable to be excited at what is being actually offered
Its not necessarily reasonable to be "deeply disappointed" that commercial reality doesn't match up to your imagination.

Could you be "deeply disappointed" that coca cola isn't offering 6 billion free singing lessons?

You would have to be quite a divot to sell your desktop/laptop to buy an iPad. Its not meant to replace either.

Of all the stuff i do on my iMac outside of work hours (logic and final cut) - the ipad will do most of it admirably and comfortably.

That is why i will get one - when it has a skype camera.

And as for printing - I don't print much but i do have a wi-fi printer.

The iPad is obviously not for you.
That doesn't make it a stupid purchase for everyone.

If it doesn't interest you - pay it no mind and move on - there are more web pages than you have minutes of life left.

Not sure why you dropped the wifi printer in there as it's just as useless for iPad printing as all the wired ones. Maybe you just wanted to mention it. Well done for having one anyway, you rock.
Your cola analogy is tortured at best, I think you got a little confused between a technological giant and a drinks company slogan. But I believe you're chiding me for daring to hope, well apologies for that, when it comes to Apple I won't make that mistake again.
I completely agree on the Skype issue, lack of a front-facing camera is just laughable.
And as for your last point, it appears that you'd prefer only iPad sycophants to populate this board. Why? Would life be more fun with an endless stream of fanboys or would you not prefer a little light sparring from time to time?

yaaaaaaaaaaawn

Dear Steve & Co,

Release the updated MBPs, already.

Thanx

Not sure why you dropped the wifi printer in ther.

Because you said
you just paid $500 for something that won't even let you print.

I was under the impression that the iPad could print wirelessly.

But I believe you're chiding me for daring to hope, well apologies for that, when it comes to Apple I won't make that mistake again.

No pleasing some people. :D

It only has 256 MB.

"Decoding the part number shows there is 2Gb of memory inside. This translates into ~128MB of memory per die, for 256 MB total. (NOT 512MB, as we previously reported.)"
