I have a laptop and an iPhone. I used to bring my laptop to the living room and surf and watch tv with my wife. For me surfing with a laptop in that circumstance was awkward. Since I got an iPhone, I never bring out the laptop anymore. The only problem with the iPhone is the screen size. For lazing around the house the ipad would be perfect. I plan on picking one up.

For all those who complain that the ipad is just a big iPod touch, well... the iPod touch is an amazing piece of kit. Hugely versatile. The ipad could be much worse. I agree with the sentiment that the iPhone OS is a more perfect match for the hardware than OSX would be.
Couldn't have said it better myself. Also, understand that there are a *lot*...and I mean a *lot*...of people that find any OS daunting so iPhone OS just works for them.

Regardless of any new features released before the end of March or not, I'm still going to be getting either the 32GB or 64GB non-3G version.

Ever since the announcement, when I get home from work I think about what I do when I get my MBP out. Do a little web surfing, check personal email, listen to some music, read the news. Then I'll put the MBP away, catch up on some TV shows that I have already purchased on iTunes on my :apple: TV, then open up the latest book / magazine before making dinner.

The fact that I will be able to do all of that with one device is just a huge plus. Yes, I will still be able to use my MBP for all of my photo editing / video encoding. I don't lose any of that ability by getting the iPad. I just gain a much simpler experience at home every night of the week.

JACKPOT!!!

Only question is : pre-order or buy on site at the Apple Store in the US in the end of March :D

Depends only on whether you just want your iPad w/ minimum hassle (pre-order) or if waiting in line for a couple hours is half the excitement (retail Apple Store).

If Apple does take pre-orders then history says it will ship pre-orders (direct from China) for delivery on the same day as it goes on sale in-store. Retail store lines will probably be 200+ deep with people getting in line hours before, mostly likely w/ their MB and MBPs in tow. For some that is half the fun-- maybe embarrassment if the local TV news camera snags a pic of you, then again who watches local news.

I'd expect Apple to hype this up to max amps so who knows, maybe they'll even give out t-shirts to the first 100 buyers at each store like they use to do with the iPods. (Funny how new iPod lanches use to be an event and now they are as exciting as the grocery store getting in a case of peas.)

Personally I'm going to pre-order and be done with it.

I use SSH extensively too (it's every bit as useful for Macs as for Linux--just wish Windows would catch up already) but I was speaking in terms of the typical iPad user which is what the author speculated about in the article. I don't think people will be remote desktop type connections on iPads will be a killer feature. It's just not a good fit. Instead, I think we'll see more and more touchscreen versions of applications like we saw in the iWork demo.

I agree with what you're saying. Funny thing is, remote access apps would be the main reason I might go for an iPad instead of an iPod Touch - but I have no illusions that I'm even in the same ballpark as the "typical" user.

I also want to see what happens with the Kindle app. My wife owns a Kindle, so it's far more likely any electronic book purchases will be on that device than on an iPad - so I'd want to be able to read them (like I can on my Touch).

Exactly!! Hopefully, in OS 4.0 they'll allow us to hide these apps (wishful thinking). As it stands now, I have 2 different weather apps (not including the weather app) 3 calculators and 3 different stock/news apps. Never touch the stock apps either!

I'd love to hide those as well, but by segregating all my unwanted apps on their own very last page, it pretty much accomplishes the same thing.

Anyone really "rushing" to just plunk down cash for an entirely new product in a new product category (for Apple at least) without even seeing what will actually be released and how it fares when put to use by real customers?

It's not really "entirely" new. The iPhone OS is time tested, girlfriend approved. All that is really new is the form factor and some of the included apps, like iBooks. For totally new, that would be the original iPhone, and of course we know what kind of response that got on Day One, sight unseen.

If they put widgets on the iPad, it would change the game! I want widgets on my iPad!

Guess we'll have to wait for a jailbroken iPad

We'll see. My gut is that dashboard will be implemented like the pic above, and will be announced before launch.

Don't get me wrong, I'm getting the 32gb wifi anyway, I just think widgets make so much sense on the iPad!

I'm thinkin these lines might be crazy for a day or two regardless of any long term sales predictions.

It's odd though, some people like the lines others can't deal with it at all.

I'm of the later group, so it's online for me. :)

But i'm a bit doubtful about this pre-order prediction being on or around the 25th. This seems way early.

we shall see.

Let's open our eyes, not our valet.

I was recommending the iPad to my brother as a possible alternative to his laptop. He said that he needed a keyboard and he didn't want to spend too much on it. He liked a couple - a Toshiba, an MSI Wind and an HP. They were all cheaper than $500 and they had a lot more features.

For watching videos, emailing, browsing and for office applications, netbooks might be much better than the iPad. For gaming, I think the iPad has no contender, when it comes to smaller devices.

Why would someone preorder. Aint that giving Apple free money they can earn interest while you wait.

Makes more sense not to preorder and you earn the interest on cash not apple.

I'm in complete disagreement with you. :D I can't see them implementing widgets on this device at all. I mean, really - iPad applications are all basically widgets to begin with. The interface is very dashboard-like already.

Guess we'll find out in a month...

We should start an over/under competition for the term "game changer" on these over-the-weekend, no-other-news iPad threads.

If Steve Jobs is on a one-man mission against "lazy" Flash, I'm on a one-man mission against a lazy phrase.

Ill take the over...

How much interest are you generating on $500.00 in 30 days?

Besides, if I remember correctly, you are not charged till it ships, the pre-order just gets you your place in line.

I got a steal on the Lenovo netbook so I'm not comparing it so much on price.

I've filled my 8gig iPod Touch many times over. 16 gig is still too small for anyone with a considerable media library. For the iPad to work for me, I want or should say need the 64gig model. I don't see the iPad being very good for streaming media until Apple introduces a Front Row type app.

For those getting excited over the iWork demo-- gimme a break. That was tech demo that they displayed at the keynote. No information was given on how to input images. Which brings me to another issue-- no SD card slot. This would be been easy to implement and made inputing images straight from a camera much easier. Instead we need another dongle.

Think about it-- The iPad is still somewhat half-baked. I can see it's potential but not until a second or third revision.

Fair enough. My biggest gripe is having to sync with a computer to get certain stuff done like software updates and other itunes administration.

iPad won't be huge hit

Here's my humble take.

I don't think the iPad will be a hit. It will sell as well as Apple's laptops and that's it. It won't be the 'consumer' hit that the iPod and iPhone have been.

My background: PC since the beginning of time, (well Amiga too). 2 years ago I had my nokia phone which I used for pictures, video, mp3 player and Dopewars. I couldn't find good software for it, it's screen was limiting. The text only 'web' was a joke.

Then 2 yrs ago, I saw a 1st G iPhone and was amazed at the touch screen, the size of it and most importantly the web experience. I could actually surf real web pages. I was sold and I got the iPhone 3G. Love it!

The iPhone works for the masses because people accept Apple's Total Control (ATC) cuz it's only a PHONE. It's not meant to replace your computer.

Everyone needs a cell phone, so why not get one that an do 'more', and u get the smart phone revolution and the iPhone works.

The public accepts ATC cuz it's a phone and we dont need to mess with hardware, nor mess with software... since it's a PHONE.

We use it primarily for:

Phone
Email, Calendar
Camera on the go (no flash/video sucks for 3G version)
MP3 player
Play a few games
Web browsing

Everything else is BONUS, and while we like it, we it's still a BONUS.
Video
Tpain
150 000 apps.

most people have tons of apps, but do they use them on a regular basis?
Hardly....

ATC works on a phone.

ATC does not work for the iPad which is supposed to replace a netbook.
No USB, no software control, no hardware control. The public and college kids will not accept the iPad due to ATC. With a netbook/latptop you can attach any USB device and install all software (Flash! too).

If you have $699 for a laptop or an iPad, which would you get if your Joe public?

College kids: They need to be able to install software for their courses, save files, install a C compiler. They aren't gonna spend $699 for an iPad that's just an itouch jacked up.

Custom software example: Doctor's office software: My docs office uses laptops.
Why would that software company make a version for the iPad which means 30% profit sharing and they can't install the software directly?? It also means all updates/patches have to go through ATC which means Apple controls their software, not them.

Charging for news: How much $ are magazines and newspapers making now off charging $? There is so much free web content out there, who is gonna pay?

Preordering avoids a trip to the store, and potential lines. And Apple doesn't charge until they ship. So a couple day's interest vs. an hour or two of my time? My time is worth more than a dollar or two of interest.

LOL. If it sells as well as Apple's laptops then Apple will have the best selling tablet product of all time. I think they'd be happy to accept that kind of failure.

For the Macbook Air we got them before most Apple stores:)

There is an enterprise developer license for $299 which allows direct deployment to a company and doesn't go through the App Store. Needs a minimum of 500 employees in the company though.
