i have the money / gift cards to get one but for my uses, it doesnt make sense to purchase this first version. although im not a big fan of flash sites, the majority that i visit have some sort of flash built into the nav, videos, news, etc. i want to check the surf at surfline.com -- cant see the live report / stream. i want to listen to howard stern online at sirius.com -- i cant because the stream requires flash. etcetera. i really would like to have this on the couch instead of breaking out the 17" macbook pro -- but, for my needs i think ill wait for future revisions...

I can't believe you listen to, to someone so un Christian. (Joke from the Jacky and the Senator movie.)

On a serious note. Why not get another tablet then? Apple is not going to aloud flash anytime soon. I mean, I forgot the name of this tegra 2 tablet, but it costs $325, you full 1080p support is you connect it to a tv as appose to 575p, USB, SD Card slot, 3g, but most important, Tegra 2. It also has support for eink.

There is a pretty nice sirius app if you really need to listen to his dribble. Rest of sirius programming is pretty decent though.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Also, understand that there are a *lot*...and I mean a *lot*...of people that find any OS daunting so iPhone OS just works for them.

Its not that OS's are daunting, its that they're a major waste of time.
Fiddling with file systems and configurations adds not one iota of quality to my life.
For the 10,000th time, this is NOT a product for 'your grandmother'. Its for anyone who wants to 'do things' rather than fiddle with the time sink that is any OS.
People who want full-blow OS's to tinker with will be come our generations ham radio operators. Occasionally useful for a while, but essentially a relic.

Oh how the times are changin'

???
I'd say the statement stands as validated. This is hardly a piece of junk (ala plastic crapbook, to which he was referring.)

A historic, not an historic.

You don't live in an house and cowboys don't ride an horse.

It just depends upon whether your local dialect pronounces the 'h' or not after the article. There are plenty of style guides that validate 'an historic'.
What sets my teeth more on edge are our brothers across the pond who refer to corporations as plural. i.e. "Apple are" instead of "Apple is".
Do they say "The United Kingdom 'are'"? Don't think so.

iPad This Week For Sure

Ok I just went to my local Apple store at Briargate in Colorado Springs. I got there 5 minutes before closing. When I came in there was a sign on the front door telling Apple employees to come in the back door. They were hanging blankets to make sure you couldn't see in the front door. The rest of the window space in front of the store is covered with ads. I ask the guy working there what is up. They were having an all hands meeting tonight for some surprise.. it was supposed to include balloons and other surprises. I figure they are not covering the windows and having all their employees come in on a sunday night for a party in the store. I am assuming it has to be that they have the iPad demo models in store and this will serve as sales training for the device. Based on the fact that they rarely tell employees in advance about anything.. I am guessing they may have demo models in store tomorrow, Monday 2/22. :D

You're not talking about the Notion Ink Adam are you? If so, the price range for that starts at $325 and goes up to $800... It also hasn't shown much in the way of software at this point so unless you just want a browser with Flash, you'd be better off waiting until you see what it can do in terms of other apps before taking that plunge.

Nope. Sorry to burst your bubble, but no way.

I use the RDC app on the iPhone to connect to my employer's network and do sysadmin type things when it's required, but let me tell you, it's a pain in the ass. It's great when I'm on the road without a computer and get a call for something I can fix quickly, but it's not something I'd want to spend a lot of time in.

Here's the main problem: you're using a touch-based device to manipulate a device that requires a dedicated keyboard and mouse. Think about that for a while. It doesn't take much to figure out how that quickly becomes a nuisance. ("I need to hold down the apple+option key." "I need to right-click.") Remote access on a touch device is good for quick access and small jobs, but nobody is going to work that way.

I agree completely, but come to a different conclusion. Someone needs to write a better RDC app.

Perhaps a section of the screen is set aside to act exactly like an apple multi-touch trackpad to control the 'mouse' on the RDC or VNC or Citrix session, etc. Quickly swappable between the 'mouse' and the virtual keyboard.

It has SO much potential, I can't wait for the first *good* RDC app.

Doubtful. Apple store employees are pretty low on the Apple ladder, and they don't need to be prepped 1 month before ship date! I'm sure they can be told in 5 minutes how to handle a product pre-order, it will all be setup on Apple.com.

Probably putting up a fresh coat of paint.

On January 27th Steve Job said the iPad would be released in 60 days, we are currently 25 days in of the 60 day timeframe.

Has Apple ever displayed a Demo version of a product this early on in their local retail store? Normally demo units are displayed the day the product goes on sale or a few days later.

P.S.
I just got done watching This Week in Tech with Leo Laporte on www.twit.tv, during the 2nd half of the show Leo mentioned that a friend reporter of his (can't remember her name, but its on the podcast) is claiming that she will be receiving a Review unit from Apple of the iPad this week. IF this reporter does get a review unit this week and we are allowed to place pre-orders on the 25th, then maybe apple will be shipping the iPad before its 60 days time frame.

agin, IF.

Read the specs... Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR technology. EDR=Enhanced Data Rate Bluetooth, and supports theoretical data transfer speeds of up to 3 Mbits.

Haven't been here in a week or so. Nice to see the cries of "it's a flop because..." has not diminished (kidding). Buying one as soon as it comes out. Hoping it will have a front facing camera and a few other surprises, but even if it doesn't I'll bite.

Camera synching, either by cable or Bluetooth, is a pretty desirable function. There are a lot of folks who would love to get a better look at their images on a shoot without squinting at a tiny crappy preview screen. Anyone ever notice that a lot of higher end professional cameras have awful preview screens?

Don't care a whit about smart card slots being built in (or not), and actually would love something to come along and cut the cord/card....

Nice post. My bets for unannounced features are front facing camera, Bluetooth earpiece (VoIP) phone and (3rd party chicklet) keyboard, SD slot, LTE forward compatibility on the "modem upgrade", cloud storage, store-forward and crippleware video, audio and graphics redistribution ala Opera browser. BTW that feature will be "upgradable" to future better hardware inclusive of the native HD iPad.

We're in for an interesting 70's like client-server, remote desktop world coming along.

Are we there yet?

Rocketman

There won't be a SD slot because Apple already introduced an adapter for that purpose.

Pdf

I am reading out and about that I will not be able to read my own PDF's on iPhone and iPad.... I notice some proprietary apps have been instructed by Apple to stop allowing their apps to upload from their PC/Mac to the device [in order for their apps to remain in app store...
Anyone else notice this?

what are you talking about? The iPad sdk allows third party apps to mount their directories on a host computer, and explicitly allows dragging and dropping files from a host computer.

New AGE New ERA of Computing

iPhone OS and Android are the fore front of new computing operating system. Microsoft finally entered the race by its submission of window phone 7 OS. Keyboards still may have a role but will eventually fade. Onboard tactile feedback surface resins typing may serve the data entry. Or maybe handwriting recognition that transcribes to text may be the new way to do data entry. Who knows?

That might be why Apple wants direct USB transfers to specific apps removed, instead preferring developers to use more current APIs in 3.2 to accomplish that type of task. Why they won't say who knows.. Maybe the old way is or will be removed in 3.2 and would cause the apps to crash when the iPad is released.

It's pretty clear why they won't allow the old way - the old way uses private APIs. You're not allowed to use private APIs. I get dinged just because some of my own APIs match the names of Apple's private APIs. They're pretty strict about that, and for good reason.

Not sure anyone said this but, if they release the new MBP on the 23rd then start taking pre-orders for the iPad, does that mean some of us are going to be dead broke because we want both?

Or will Apple charge the card when iPad ships in March or April?

Damn serious. Phil Schiller plus tech demo = snore.

Of all of the posts of people bashing the iPad, you're the first one I've seen who is disappointed that the iPad will have a touch enabled, light office suite available for it the day it's released for $30.
