Apple? Try Google and Amazon and whoever came with the idea of cloud storage first. (I love Dropbox btw.)

I dont think his point was to tell us that apple was first.
And as a sidenote, neither was google or amazon, they were'nt even started up at the time "cloud" computing was done. It's just a new (buzz)word for old tech.

The "missing" applications mean nothing. The iPod/iPhone/iPad simulators have never included these apps. The iPad was most likely running a stripped down (simulator type) OS as opposed to the full OS.

There are too many functions that the camera would add - that makes it absurd to not include.

It seems a bit more aimed for businesses (argh, the spelling) this time around. Cameras are a no-go in many companies, this could be a reason.

Notice there is a completely blank key on the iPad's keyboard/dock. Probably for Dashboard.

No, it's probably the future shutter release button for the front-facing camera. You know, the missing iSight camera that's driving fanboys apoplectic. :p

I firmly believe that Apple announced this device when it was only 90% complete from a software perspective (which many software and electronics companies do). I think Apple was worried that if they waited weeks/months into the March timeframe for the announcement (thus giving only 2-3 weeks notice to the public), more and more people would have already purchased Kindles and netbooks and laptops and iPod Touches. Let the users gain interest...and in the 60+ days it takes to actually get it on the street the software developers can work on bugs, more QA, and sticking a few more features or enhancements in it. It's not like the manufacturing plants have to really change anything (unlike having to create a new case or port). I bet within 10 days of release Apple will also have some kind of iPad update (heck maybe even before you get the iPad in your hands).

As of today, Apple still has 30+ days to stuff more features into the iPad.

Regardless of any new features released before the end of March or not, I'm still going to be getting either the 32GB or 64GB non-3G version.

Ever since the announcement, when I get home from work I think about what I do when I get my MBP out. Do a little web surfing, check personal email, listen to some music, read the news. Then I'll put the MBP away, catch up on some TV shows that I have already purchased on iTunes on my :apple: TV, then open up the latest book / magazine before making dinner.

The fact that I will be able to do all of that with one device is just a huge plus. Yes, I will still be able to use my MBP for all of my photo editing / video encoding. I don't lose any of that ability by getting the iPad. I just gain a much simpler experience at home every night of the week.

if that is the home screen... then this 'widget' system be on the page to the left.. on the picture the dots at the bottom show is on the 2nd screen... (sorry if i missed that part in the article)

Spotlight? i nearly thought the same until i remembered about the oh so little used Spotlight on my phone lol

But of course this doesn't mean the developers will give you free upgrades to iPad-specific versions.

Of course not. But I'm someone who'd happily pay for an iPad specific version of software I already use on my iPhone as long as it was more than just a visual facelift.

$175 is unrealistic for the feature set that most desire. Once apple makes the move to the cloud with their NC data center, memory will become a thing of the past.

I got a steal on the Lenovo netbook so I'm not comparing it so much on price.

I've filled my 8gig iPod Touch many times over. 16 gig is still too small for anyone with a considerable media library. For the iPad to work for me, I want or should say need the 64gig model. I don't see the iPad being very good for streaming media until Apple introduces a Front Row type app.

For those getting excited over the iWork demo-- gimme a break. That was tech demo that they displayed at the keynote. No information was given on how to input images. Which brings me to another issue-- no SD card slot. This would be been easy to implement and made inputing images straight from a camera much easier. Instead we need another dongle.

Think about it-- The iPad is still somewhat half-baked. I can see it's potential but not until a second or third revision.

Since I'll never use an SD card with it, I appreciate the engineering decision to leave it out to reduce cost, size, etc. Thanks, Apple!

i would love too see a joypad of some sort for this, i know kind of negates the point of a touchscreen... but Apple are releasing a connectable keyboard for this thing...

picture imports

The camera accessories look like a nice way to store pictures from your camera.

Looks like a SD card reader and a usb port. Wonder what the jailbreakers will make of that?

I Heard There Was Going To Be A Front-facing Camera!!!!1

There will be. Maybe as a surprise entry on this version when it's released, or in the next version. Lots of additions will be made to it over time. Compare the first iPod to today's version. Compare the first iPhone software to today's version. The lack of vision is sometimes a narrow focus on what is available today instead of what will be coming tomorrow.

You know how you show in a movie that you are setting the story in the 80s? Yeah, big hair, etc., but also give the character a Walkman. In 20 or 30 years when they want to set a movie in the 2000s, you know what they will use as shorthand? White iPod headphones. Instantly recognizable for iPods became THE consumer device of the past decade.

The 2010s will be the decade of the iPad. No, not just this version, but the version we'll be using in 2019 as well.

Desktop versus Mobile OS X

Because I would like to be able to run my existing desktop applications and access my existing data.

NOT. GOING. TO. HAPPEN.

Mobile devices don't run on x86, and don't have a mouse and a keyboard, thus rendering your desktop apps 1. Unable to run at all 2. With a UI that makes no sense for touch input (particularly finger input)

What I do expect is a gradual expansion of integration with the desktop, more access to docs (there's already an iWork for iPad, expect Office etc to follow), and new versions of desktop apps for the iPad/iPhone OS, which will address most of your concerns.

What you will never see (and would make no sense!!!!?!?!) is to run OS X desktop apps on touchscreen ARM devices. Trying to provide that would lead to baroque complexity and horrible interfaces - not an Apple trademark. Better to move over to windows mobile if that's the sort of thing you're looking for (seriously, they will be targeting that sort of use-case better, in spite of the noises about a new UI for WP7).

Perhaps in a few years desktop OS X will be superseded by some version which uses APIs very similar to Touch OS X. The SDK certainly reads as a clean-up and trim of older OS X APIs - cutting it down to the essentials. As far as Steve is concerned I suspect windows-like interfaces, desktops, the Finder etc have been consigned to the trash can of history. They've been around a long time, and as the iPhone shows, most of that furniture just isn't required for a functional interface.

If AT&T ever allows tehering I wonder if yiu will need to have a 3G ipad? My guess is that wifi ipad could be thethered as well since laptops have this functionality without 3G. Anyhow that would make the 3G ipad basically worthless since you always have your phone with you.
Exactly. I'm thinking/hoping that AT&T has some good news for us that will coincide with the release of the iPad. I've never been an AT&T hater but I think it might help them gain some favor with those that fall within that camp. 'Kinda like buying your girl a dozen roses after staying out too late with the boys. 

Ooo, it has an ANY key.

OHHH yes you are correct... we assumed Wi-Fi + 3G model meant both the WiFi and the 3G models... whereas apple refers to the one that coes with 3G as the "Wi-Fi + 3G model"

Think LCD screen on the face of the key... Then the key becomes any key, assignable in software, shows on the key face. Nice. Except I touch type. Still, nice.

I've been waiting for an "ANY" key for years. ;)
