Well, I lost interest if this tablet does come with some form of the iphone software & not at least a lite version of Snow Leopard. I don't need another device with the iphone software. I bet this doesn't even come with a dvd drive, how could it if it has any version of the iphone OS. I'm sure not a buyer at any price over $399, which is what a nice netbook sells for.

Oh yes, it will come with a blu-ray drive, 3 USB ports, Gigabit and media (analog, optical, composite or maybe just HDMI). But those things will all be in a peripheral unit (using either dock or wireless or maybe both) that will at least double the "shockingly low" price.

Read the whole post, please. Steve lied. He promised all the internet. Whether you like it or not, there are a great many (and growing) number of web sites you simply can not navigate without Flash. The buttons and various and sundry items necessary to navigate the sites are in Flash. Go install Firefox and then the Flashblock add-on. You will then see just how widespread Flash is.

I am glad that you enjoy being among the crow praising the virtues of a crippled device.

My comment below is aboult flash itself, and totally unrelated to the debate itself over whether the device should or shouldn't have flash support (and I'd be surprised if it didn't for all those "electronic magazines" that have been mentioned)

I don't have an iphone, or any other "mobile" internet device so i have little experience of browsing on a device that small. However, what I do know is that I avoid any website which uses flash like that plague, unless i absoluately have no choice. I can't recall being unable to use any site because i'd disabled flash. I'm sure there are some however, but flash, in my opinion, is one of the worst things that ever happened to the internet. Its heavy, it's slow and it has slowed down the pace of development of a proper non-plug-in alternative.

Nobody has the illusion of "free 3G". I'm sure everyone here knows that with the Kindle that the price of the data connection is put into the price of the unit and into the price of each download. The thing is, Apple needs to go this route. Having ANOTHER contract for ANOTHER data plan is only going to piss a lot of people off. Sure some will go for it, but not as many as Apple would probably like. I know I won't go for it.

So did you read the rest of the post? How does Apple "go this route" they "need to go" (build the 3G cost into the media) when the media is so much larger and thus so much more expensive for the "included" 3G?

And I beg to differ: many posters seem to believe that the 3G can get built in, and thus be "free"... "just like the Kindle". But then when you show them the math- that Amazon pays 15 cents per megabyte to cover that "free 3G" and what that means to non grayscale, text-heavy, Kindle-like iTunes media like music, TV shows, and movies- they just switch to another variation of the same illusion... or suggest Apple will be able to strike a much better deal than Amazon (which, even if that was somehow true, is still ugly when pricing the "free 3G" into 800MB TV show files or 1400MB movie files. Just do the math yourself)

No doubt that NO ONE wants to pay for 3G... or "another 3G contract"... but if you want to buy a Tablet AND you want internet access anytime, anywhere (beyond being locked to open wifi access points) SOMEBODY (aka YOU) has to pay for the 3G one way or another. Amazon's "free" way is extremely expensive compared to a 3G contract, unless you use this new full color Tablet in ways that pretty much duplicates how a Kindle is used (grayscale, text-heavy books only... no iTunes TV shows, no movies, no podcasts, etc... and no generally open, normal Safari browsing, YouTube, etc.).

Much like the iPhone, I don't think the tablet would be allowed to download such large files over 3G anyways. They may restrict the OTA downloads to music and books.

I'm somewhat afraid you may be right. And if so, the general crowd might get confused about who to blame.

Also think about the ramifications in terms of using Safari. Will this big-screen device only be able to partially access Internet content like- say- YouTube being on the "too bad" list? There again, the "I'll just use my laptop" crowd might grow.

As I imagined this product, the big screen practically begs for more than just books & music. It seems like THE way for all things video... if a person is not going to also lug along their laptop. However, if the 3G is limited to non-video media, there's going to be a potential customer service backlash and/or education campaign to try to help people pre-plan for bigger media from home or at a wifi connection, while being able to anytime, anywhere the non-video media.

That seems a bit messy to me. But I guess we'll see soon enough.

Think about it this way: You have a product that´s pretty much more simple than people anticipate it to be. What do you do?
You spread a rumor of a much higher price than it will actually be.
So - when you demo it - and it has less "power" to it - you tip them over by the much lower price - and then you pitch the device into a whole new platform - of consuming media - instead of a device to construct media.

See..

Isn't this rich?

The one who rants on and on about H8ng, gets bitch slapped by his own steaming spoonful.

Priceless.

And if you had used my full quote:

Then we should assume that we're hallucinating, and thank Jobs for recommending LSD therapy.

</sarcasm>

If it's $500, you won't want it. If it's $1000, you'll want it but might not be able to afford it.

But it will be $899 - so you won't know which it is.

It's amazing that you missed the sarcasm, even with the "</sarcasm>" tag in the post.

So, we have a stripped $500 model (16GB, on a media pad  - and no 3G), and a reasonable 3G + GPS + 64 GB for $829. So, I was $70 high for the one you want.

Now really - how many people will rush to get the stripped model vs. the one they want?

What's amazing is that you think that you can buffer your derogatory sh*t by simply placing a "</sarcasm>" disclaimer somewhere within its proximity.

Your intentions, however, remain loud and clear.

After all the whining and bitching about value, about Apple forcing consumers to purchase laptops with features they neither want nor need, Apple suddenly offers a reasonably priced solution, and you deride it as a "stripped down" model?

Flaming hypocrisy, as usual.

Amazing hyperbole here - "rants on and on" refers to 4 characters in my sig, a new avatar, and one reply to someone who asked about the changed avatar. Who's the hypocritical H8er?

Not priceless, just sad.

Your short memory span, in conjunction with your tendency of denial, comes off as not surprising.

Wood's taking some time off - there's too much H8 here, so I hope people think about the fact that liking one thing doesn't require that you hate the alternatives.

Priceless, and sad.

What's amazing is that the moderators don't give you a timeout for repeatedly violating the forum rules about personal attacks, harassment, and name calling.

Name calling?

Again, delusional.

Calling you out on your contradictory nature?

Not a violation.

What's amazing...

blah blah blah

Once again, he destructively replaces quotes with derogatory blurbs, after hypocritically whining and accusing others of much less severe actions.

Perhaps, you ought to consider a voluntary hiatus for yourself - as there are plenty of Microsoft and Dell sites for you out there, which would suit your fancy.

More likely, however, you find it more gratifying to shoot off your negativity around here - strangely, you seem to thrive on it.

I do not disagree with you about the use of bloated Flash presentations.

Steve lied. Right or wrong, Flash is reality and you simply can not access "all the internet" as Steve promised without it. There are quite a few sites that have much more flash than you realize. If you have not already, install Firefox and then the add-on Flashblock and see just how prevalent it is.

Cheers
