Would the lighting to 30-pin adaptor work on the iPhone 4 dock or is that too unstable?

I would suspect it would be dangerously unstable. The existing 4/4S dock uses not only the 30 pin connector to hold the phone, but the dock itself cup around the bottom of the phone to support it. I think using the adaptor on the dock would leave the iPhone 5 hanging in mid-air and it would likely fall backwards off it and perhaps damage the Lightning adaptor.

So the adaptor can't be used at all on aftermarket speaker or clock systems as it'll do exactly that?

yea, this stinks honestly. I have always used a dock before, both at home and at work. I am moving over from droid, so its not like I even have an old iphone dock to try and use the connector on which sounds very unstable as it is though.... hope some of these 3rd party companies come up with something soon. Do we think they will even have availability of the lightning connector, or will apple keep that to themselves?

Don't worry guys calm down, their will be a million third party vendors taking full advantage of this thus satisfying all your dock needs....Trust.

Can't believe you guys are buying into this guys crap...even his supposed screenshot is an obvious fake.

He did not receive an email from Phil and there will be a dock...

i bet this guy feels like an idiot. kinda like those people who thought it'd be called the iPhone 6...

anyway, yeah, i'm also looking in the market for a dock, but not all that concerned with audio capabilities. just a nice, solid dock that holds my phone in an upright position while charging. was hoping apple would make one, but i also never owned the apple dock for the iphone 4 either (bought a couple third party ones), so i'm not going crazy that apple isn't making their own. NBD.

While I certainly do not feel like an idiot, I am certainly eating crow. Around the time of an iPhone launch and release or major rumors this stuff does happen. People used to come on a fake emails from Steve all the time. So yes, I did certainly think the OP was lying intially. What I failed to look at was his/her history as a member. Typically the "forum trolls" are brand new registered members.

All that aside, I for one am also disappointed by this news. I have two docks that I use primarily just for their simplicity. I'm sure there will be similarly designed simple products available on sites like www.sw-box.com and others, but having the actual Apple dock would have been nice.

Why do I sense a conspiracy that Apple tried and failed to produce a dock for the iPhone 5?

1. The iPhone 5 is too light and the lightening port connection seems too sturdy to support a dock. My iPhone 4 would just rest on to the dock for charging without any pressure required, I can't see this being the case for the 5.

2. I can see a dock connector chip or marking the black paint around the connector of iPhone causing Apple to stay clear.

For me, not having a charging dock for the iPhone 5 is a step backwards from the iPhone 4.

They probably used the iPhone 4S manual as a base and altered it for the iPhone 5 and this just slipped through.

I'd rather not have anything rubbing the back, but if it's stable enough as claimed why get it?

If you have a case on your phone, there's really nothing to worry about if it's rubbing the back. Plus I feel like it will give you extra stability if you want to keep the phone docked while you're typing or whatever. I do that sometimes when I'm in bed and my phone is docked on my nightstand and I get a text. I just start typing with the phone in the dock instead of removing it every time.

True, but better check with them to make sure the back plate is compatible with a case because it might sit back only far enough to support the naked iPhone, in which case an iPhone in a case is too thick to fit there.

I carry mine naked so I'm going to order one without the back plate.

That is one nice looking dock. Priced reasonably, unlike Element case that wants $100.

Damn! I've built in the dock in my car and wanted to replace it for an iPhone5 version :/

For next to my computer I'm waiting for my elevation dock, but that is too big to build into the ashtray as I did right now. :(

Wouldn't your phone fall out or go flying in a car dock? Also, seems like it would always be in an awkward position too (too low, etc. to be useful).

I actually emailed them about that already and they said that the back plate is compatible with a case.

I ordered two of the Braeburn sound docks (satin aluminum) a few days ago.Haven't gotten my tracking info yet but it is only 1 pm Pacific.Theyre supposed to ship today. Well see! If anyone else ordered one lets see some picshttp://www.braeburnacoustics.com/Braeburn_Desk_for_iPhone_5_s/1825.htm

That one actually looks pretty interesting - it's cheaper than the lightning dock too. Wonder which one is heavier though. I think you'd need something pretty heavy if you want to be able to pull the phone off the dock without the entire dock lifting up off the table, desk, etc.

I'm guessing with the sound channel milled out of the bottom some weight went with it..To be honest though I don't consider using two hands to remove my phone from a dock a disadvantage. If anything I feel its more secure. Also, with the lightning connector and how the design" grabs" your phone, a dock would have to be fairly large to allow single hand removal. I personally don't want a massive chunk of metal on my nightstand.

Hey guys, I am in the same position as most of you, missing the convenience of using a dock to charge your iPhones. I have 2 iPhone 3GS docks I used to use for my iPhone 4, one on my bedside and another for my iMac, I decided today that I wanted to try and 'up-cycle' these docks for use with my lightning cable that came with my iPhone 5. It was a relatively easy process and I will post instructions if they're wanted, sorry the picture posted is poor quality

Hah, I had a similar idea! Mine's not yet finished though, I am still working on raising the base. For now I use a $1 plastic card holder from Staples. Using it in the traditional style, the back of the phone gets supported by the dock's curves on the sides.

Until there's an official Apple dock, or one that has a bit more support than just the tip of the connector holding it up, I made a dock out of some scrap wood today.

Yeah it's kind of ugly, but it'll do the job with lots of stability for charing only until a real dock is released. And it was all scrap wood, glue, and stuff I had laying around.
