Not ugly at all - (look at some other homebrew options out there) good job!

Hah, I had a similar idea! Mine's not yet finished though, I am still working on raising the base. For now I use a $1 plastic card holder from Staples. Using it in the traditional style, the back of the phone gets supported by the dock's curves on the sides.

Until there's an official Apple dock, or one that has a bit more support than just the tip of the connector holding it up, I made a dock out of some scrap wood today.

Yeah it's kind of ugly, but it'll do the job with lots of stability for charing only until a real dock is released. And it was all scrap wood, glue, and stuff I had laying around.

Its cool how we have all used different methods to reproduce a dock, i thought i would be the only one, my iphone 5 came with a scratch so i didnt want to cause any more! I find that because of the ball+socket implemented to keep the device attached its much harder to get my phone out of the dock i made than with the old 30-pin dock connector. Perhaps this is why apple didnt build their own dock, as they didn't think people would want to have to pry their phone out of it?

Wouldn't your phone fall out or go flying in a car dock? Also, seems like it would always be in an awkward position too (too low, etc. to be useful).

No, It's in the ashtray and it's right below the radio, for me the perfect position. I don't have to watch it all the time and now it's not blocking my view.

But I found a solution, I've bought a microusb adapter and built that in, it's even more solid than my last dock.
