why does everyone think you will NEED a data plan... why wouldnt i be able to go into apple, buy the phone, pop my sim card in and use my plan how it is now, and when i want to use the web ill use wifi

Did you not see the Cingular / AT&T part of this whole deal?

this are great news! my main concern was the battery and it's now solved, now my main concern is the plan

The press release also report sthat the 3.5" display has been upgaded from plastic to "optical-quality glass" for superior clarity and scratch resistance.

Glass??

I sure wouldn't want to drop it now :). I think I dropped my Nokia N-Gage over 100 times now. If that thing was made out of glass, I'd have to replace it half the time.

You are telling me all of a sudden, two weeks before release they have made an advancement and all iPhones produced prior to this date were obselete?

All they did was manipulate the test conditions and possibly optimize the software on the phone a bit. Nothing physical was changed on the phone.

Shame the camera still stinks. 2M pixels is pretty poor for phones these days.

Camera phones are poor, full-stop. 2MP is as much definition as you could want from a device that isn't a proper camera.

This news is awesome, by the way. My two greatest fears for iPhone have been addressed.

Is this supposed to be stunning news?

I think you are way off-base. They announced the first specs in january. And as they finalized the hardware in the weeks that followed, and perfected the software, they managed to increase battery-life. There's no magic to it, just simple product-developement. Now they merely announced the final specs. And I think that it's safe to say that they didn't do this _right now_, they propably did this weeks ago.

What exactly is a "select" AT&T retail store and how will we differentiate from a regular and "select" location?

It's called a laptop! I think Apple makes them too.

I hate carrying my laptop on travel -- especially with all the security restrictions and a spate of recent lost bags. I want to carry my iPhone and two carry on bags (where neither is a laptop). In short, if I can ditch the laptop, I can also stop checking a bag.

What I want is a Keynote viewer on the iPhone and an adapter to let me hook up the iPhone to the standard VGA connectors on overhead projectors. Then I just need to take my iPhone on business trips.

I hope the after-market iPhone ecosystem is as popular as the after-market iPod market.

i know that this is an exclusive deal with att... im saying, as an att customer, why couldnt i just buy the phone and keep my existing plan... i dont want to add a data plan to my account, i just want to buy the iphone and use it as a phone and use the web over wifi... the phone would still be exclusive to att... read my post before you make a remark.. its a valid question

I have read that WiFi will be disabled until you buy a data plan.

Exactly. I'm not way off base. This has been finalized a while ago, before production for the magical "3 million." I am just addressing those who are making this out to be a fix to what was a deal breaker to a other people. When in fact nothing has changed. I'm sure apple is quite aware of the losing interest and the increasing criticism of the phone so they are strategically putting this out.

Why do you need a 80GB iPhone?

I know, because you want to have all of you content, but is that really necessary?

I used to think it was, but then I got an iPod Shuffle and basically retired my full 40GB iPod. I now use iTunes as a central hub for all of my content and I have smart playlists (currently I have one which selects from songs which have only been played 10 times or less from over 10,000 songs) and whenever I pop my shuffle into the dock I just do a replace/autofill and upload a new set of songs.

Actually, it bugs me that all my content doesn't fit on my 30GB iPod. I like the autofill feature on the shuffle, and on some occasions it's nice to just grab the shuffle.

But sometimes I'm in the mood for Jazz. Sometimes Classical. Or Rock, Folk, Indie, etc, or music from a specific decade. Or sometimes I want to listen to an audiobook or a podcast. And occasionally, I'm in the mood for a short film or TV show (and the iPhone does have a bigger screen, nicer for video). It's really the diversity that makes it nice to have ALL my content with me, not just a selection.

Actually...we started doing slideshows off iPods...we just made the slides into photos. Good Stuff.

i wonder if the mystery surrounding the plan has to do with the .mac improvements jobs hinted at D5? think of a few other things - leopard has two very iphone-esque features:

1) .mac's back-to-my-mac -- yeah that's great for those of us who have a desktop and a laptop and travel, but how many of the general public have both? i bet within a year there will be more consumers with an imac/iphone combo than an imac/macbook combo

2) coverflow is sort of useless on the current range of macs, but coverflow with the back-to-my-mac feature and quick-look makes a lot of sense. i can't count the number of times i've been out and about and needed to look at something on my home computer -- i can't be alone. also i think it would in many ways alleviate the "it's only 8gb argument". obviously on EDGE it wouldn't be so hot downloading a 2GB final cut movie, but for many consumer level docs it'd be great.

throw in some additional refinements:

1) .mac works as a push imap server and will aggregate all your email accounts.

2) .mac widget library, click on .mac and you're presented with a widget library like dashboard, but they're hosted at .mac not locally.

Not According to the EPA et. al.

It is more energy effecient to not recycle glass. It takes less energy to make glass from scratch than it does to recycle glass, expecially glass that has so many impurities in it in such as scratch proof glass.

  • Recycled glass saves 50% energy vs. virgin glass (Center for Ecological Technology)
  • Recycling of one glass container saves enough energy to light a 100-watt bulb for 4 hours (EPA)
  • Recycled glass generates 20% less air pollution and 50% less water pollution (NASA)
  • 1 ton of glass made from 50% recycled materials saves 250 lbs. of mining waste (EPA)
  • Glass can be reused an infinite number of times
  • Over a ton of resources is saved for every ton of glass recycled -- 1,330 pounds of sand, 433 pounds of soda ash, 433 pounds of limestone, and 151 pounds of feldspar. Also a ton of glass produced from raw materials creates 384 pounds of mining waste. Using 50% recycled glass cuts the waste by 75%.

Children of a lesser god...WiFi will not be disabled if you don't get the data plan. Where do you get these ideas? If you didn't see yourself in a puddle you would probably believe you didn't exist.

Simply put... when you order from the Apple website and you recieve your phone you don't even need to use it as a phone!!! You can use wifi and pretty much everything else even call people if you have skype. So, first buy it from apple.com then use it for a few days if you like it then take it to the ATT store and have them set it up with a SIM for you unless you already have a SIM.

I have read that WiFi will be disabled until you buy a data plan.

I'll add my voice to the others. Wifi will not be disabled. This rumor started because an AT&T exec made the statement in an interview that you would have to get a data plan to use internet. However, if you read the text of the interview, it seems likely that he was just referring to the internet over edge.

It is also possible that AT&T execs are unaware that the internet exists independent of their cell network, that's why they think their prices for data and ringtones seem perfectly reasonable. :D

My only quandry now is this: Do I go to the AT&T store on the morning of the 29th and hang out for 8+ hours and hope they have enough in stock to take care of opening day demand? Will the AT&T stores have LESS on stock than the Apple stores, so if I end up being the 101st person in line, and they only had 100, I'll be screwed? Even Steve Jobs made a general statement about staying away from his own stores on that day because of the (probably true) indications that they'll be madhouses. But will the Apple stores stock more because of the anticipation to more folks being there?

I'm with you on this... I'm fortunate enough in my area to have two corporate-owned stores almost across the street from each other in North Canton, Ohio, and I visited them both over the weekend to confirm that indeed, they'll have the iPhone and sadly, that they were both expecting long lines. I'm planning to hit the less-obvious of the two (one of them is on the corner facing a big shopping mall, the other is around the corner nestled amongst smaller retail stores), hoping that the masses won't pay attention to the store around the corner... :D

I can dream, anyway... :(
