The fact that AT&T has yet to release anything resembling plan features/cost raises a big red flag, in my mind.
I get the feeling that on June 29th, all potential iPhone users are in for a rude awakening when we learn what AT&T has to offer. I can even see those same customers balking at the counter when learning of what it will cost, monthly, to use the device. I hope not. But something tells me on top of the price of the device, there will be a ~$120/mo service plan to consider.

Let's hope AT&T has something user-friendly up their sleeve.

If not, bring on the nanoPhone™!! :p

Asked once in an AT&T store - says that you will need the usual plan + additionally $60 a month for the internet access (mandatory), so depending on your minute requirements it will be >$130 and more....

I hope the glass is thick enough... I remember the glass breaking on my Palm Pilot twice - just from having it in my pocket. One time I was taking it out to show some people and the entire surface looked like a spider web of cracks - that was embarrassing.

I'm predicting lawsuits from cracked displays. Hmm, I should start buying appropriate domain names now...

Apple has factsheet and comparison-sheet of iPhone here. It says that Nokia N95 has no Wi-Fi. Well, fact is that N95 DOES have Wi-Fi. I really don't know why Apple is making such a claim on their website.

Unless they changed this since you posted, the site does indeed say that the Nokia N95 has WiFi now.

Anyway I can't wait to let the crowds die down and run into an AT&T store and try out an iPhone...

Because the N95 only gets 4 hours of talk time with Wi-Fi turned off.

No, that's not it. They are claiming that N95 does not have Wi-Fi, period. But it does have Wi-Fi, so Apple's claim is 100% false. And how much "talk"-time does the iPhone get with Wifi? Apple isn't saying.

Ooops, I stand corrected: Apple has fixed their comparison-chart. Now we're talking :).

re: gps

considering the added component cost, additional point of failure, battery life degradation... anyone think that apple might be a lot more creative and use cellular triangulation for positioning?

seems like a very apple like solution. they might not even announce it as a feature as triangulation wouldn't be as dependable as GPS, but you could hit google maps and "boom" the map automatically locates to your general location.
Based on the training manual, I doubt it. There was never any mention to triangulation, and when the topic of GPS (or lack thereof) was brought up, triangulation was not mentioned as a substitute.

Then again, the complete lack of mention of triangulation might be support the theory that it's a feature that hasn't been announced yet.

imagine

imagine if you pluged in your 8gig iPhone for the first time, and there was an update. you update the iPhone, restart it, and the screen says " do you really think we would settle for 8gig?" then excited as you are, check the about this iPhone. Sure enough you have a 16gig when you were already happy with 8!

All cell phones are required to have some form of triangulation, at least at the carrier end, for emergency personnel to locate cell phone users.

Good news, if true. Dvorak and others have criticized the hypothetical battery life of this unreleased product. I wonder if the battery has been upgraded somehow from the one originally planned? Usually, Apple's estimates are in the ballpark if not 100% perfect.

Anxiously awaiting the early reviews!

Folks, please dont insult by writing incorrect names. his name is "John Dork" not "John Dvorak" :D

Just one thought: if it is glass, how about possible breaking the glass? Of course, you should not drop it or bump it, but my celphone has survived some falls. Will the iPhone do?

Sorry it will not blend! ;) :D

I am going to take an assumption that many people will need to be charged every night. After an 1 of videos 3 hours of music while on the net and 10 phones calls in the day(that at least how it for me).

For what we're paying and the expected usage, this is great news.

Yes it is. I just sealed the deal for me... maybe that means one more little surprise upgrade at launch....double the memory and it will be perfect

every iphone thread i ever read there is always an australian complaining about how they won't get it for a year, and not actually commenting on the topic at hand.

why does everyone think you will NEED a data plan... why wouldnt i be able to go into apple, buy the phone, pop my sim card in and use my plan how it is now, and when i want to use the web ill use wifi

without being too rude about the sales staff at cingular/at&t, they're neither the most informed or brightest of citizens. mentioning of triangulation might be far too technical.

i could see it as being like bonjour -- apple never really plays up the technical jibber-jabber behind it they just promoted the fact that it worked.

i'm not hopeful though, that seems like a feature they would have played up by now... maybe in a software update.

Yet, the big question is still not answered ... DOES IT HAVE A REMOVABLE BATTERY ?! Apple, your silence is starting to prove that you didn't plan for people wanting a removable battery and you realize people are going to be rather upset when they realize it doesn't have it.

Grrr, this totally angers me. I can't understand why such a basic thing isn't mentioned.

It does not have a removable battery. Get over it already. The battery craps out in two years you buy a new one. These days who really keeps a cell phone or a PDA for longer than two years.

I just read this on Apple.com this morning and I think it's amazing.

The phone is appealing to me now....But then again so are a lot of $500 products. I also tend to lose my phone often...like every day.

Afraid to lose your valuable iPhone?

iCollar to the rescute, this device transmits a mild to moderate current thru the collar depending on the distance from the iphone. You are ceirtain to notice leaving the iPhone behind.

Warning: Apple does not recommend wearing the iCollar device when using the iGashm. The combined result may not be pleasant.

You do know that glass is used in other products, such as windshields in cars and on watches, right?

Glass is pretty strong.

Exactly. Id like to see someone take the glass out of their watch and break it in half with their hands...

Why does everyone think the glass is going to be some flimsy thin layer... Dont you think Apple used their brains and tested the thing before they decided to use glass over plastic... Do you really think Apple is that dumb?

I think everyone complaining about the size of the iPhone are forgetting one important fact.

It's the iPhone not the iPod. It's a phone which has iPod and internet functionality - but it's still a phone at heart.

Wait until they released the 6G iPod later this year (probably sept), then you will see decent storage sizes for all your movies and music.

For playing a number of movies while on a long trip.

I am waiting for an accessory called the iPhone Backpack (made up name). It will be basically the same size as the iPhone and will fit on the back side of the iPhone -- actually the iPhone will slide into the Backpack with its dock connecting to the bottom of the Backpack.

The iPhone Backpack will include extra storage (maybe a harddrive, or maybe a couple of extra Gig of ram) and a battery. The primary focus is for playing movies while being away from your computer for several days.

It's called a laptop! I think Apple makes them too.

Is it a hand-held electronic device? Is it made by Apple?

Then it doesn't have a user-replaceable battery.

Look, I did that without even looking at their website! There shouldn't be any confusion over this aspect.

I think Apple will offer very attractive data plans. Data plans won't be a deal
breaker.
