You see FAR more IR going outside or looking at a flame.
Oh, the sun projects a matrix of IR lasers across your face and eyes when you go outside? Really? That’s news to me, as I always thought the IR in solar radiation was quite diffuse.

Nice and vague, are they doctors? I doubt they are, as infrared is even radiated by your own body. It's good to be critical, but saying "I have medical people in my family THUS we were concerned" is trying to use the 'authority argument'.
I’m sorry, but you can’t be serious. You’re comparing IR radiated by your body with concentrated points of IR light beamed at your face?

Do you understand the difference between diffuse light and a laser? The difference between looking at a light bulb and looking at a laser pointer? The difference between daylight and laser beams?

Considering it’s a fraction of a second I don’t see this as a huge deal. They’ve been saying the same thing about tv since the beginning of home television units. Obviously different tech but the point is, there’s always risks. But a fraction of a second, I can’t see that doing massive damage over the life span of a phone. Now if you stick the device right up to your eyes and open your peepers really wide for an hour I can see that doing something.

It's not quite "a fraction of a second"..my iPhone Xs is flashing constantly on my face even though is unlocked..

That's the awareness where it checks if you are still looking at the screen so the screen will stay on.

You can also disable this feature

Waiting for a Class Action in 5 years or less...
No kidding. Clocks ticking since Nov 3, 2017. QUOTE ME ON THIS!
Even if there is no actual physical damage can I just sue Apple for emotional distress. I can’t aleep at night for worrying about what those rays are going to do to my face.

Ha ha, some silly comments here..If you wanna sue Apple go ahead..I'm just wondering why the sensor is always on even with face ID switched off..no one seems to know

you must be based in the United States, I've heard you guys like suing for pretty much everything... No kidding

Well I had been injured by the Face ID feature on the iPhone Max. The cataract in my right eye was dislocated on October 20th immediately after I set up the FaceID feature which resulted in me having surgery on November 21st. I still don't have clear vision in my right eye. I'm still going through the healing process. I don't know when I will be able to see again in my right eye. My surgery was performed at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary by two doctor's Dr. Gennady B Landa MD & Dr. Jerome Giovinazzo MD. I presented the information presented here for their edification. I also reached out to Apple who asking for documentation substantiating my claim. I will keep you posted on the outcome. I have attached my emergency room report.

Without meaning to detract from your situation at all, it seems staggeringly unlikely that the VCEL made it happen, doesn’t it?

I think this is the successor to the "the new Mac Mini is almost certainly coming" thread.

Correlation is causation for some people

There's some medical people in our family and there was quite a discussion at Thanksgiving dinner about the iPhone X facial recognition technology. Face ID uses near-infra red laser dots which is not a great category for eye safety. So is it safe for infra red dots scanning your face all day long? I wasn't sure whether to also post this in the medical forum or someone had thoughts there?

Many infra red lasers.....even though your eye cannot see them... can
- make proteins appear in the vitreous humor
- cause cataract problems
- damage retina sensors
- irritate cornea

You can look up VSCEL laser, which is the type used on the iPhone X (vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser).

But Apple is just following Class 1 laser safety and no study has been made to prove thew new technology's safety over time. Many other company's phones will also eventually have this technology.

One last thing = https://1reddrop.com/2017/09/16/will...damage-retina/
Oh god, is it burning them up?

And how exactly did they determine that Faceid caused the damage?

I don't know whether it causes damage, but I do not like the idea of invisible beams shooting at my face every time I look at one of these X phones.

Seriously??? You ER slip does nothing but give confidential information about you, i.e. name, account #, etc.

There is nothing saying FaceID dislocated your cataract, frankly a physical impossibility.

I'm sure this all makes the doctors feel edified.

Then don't use one. There, problem solved!

You must be a very unhappy person lol (<- /H).

Almost the entire electromagnetic spectrum is not visible to our eyes, the visible portion is quite small.

There is no way the dots messed up your eye. Just another person looking for the lottery in the court room.
