I'm on the phone with Apple, and they said all advisors were sent an email about the iPhone 5 being cosmetically damaged right out of the box. I am on hold while they talk to a senior advisor.

If you have issues, call them! They already have set steps that are being taken.

Nice CS Apple! :) :apple:

Did you buy your phone from Apple ?

So they know about faulty manufacturing? Doesn't seem like CS to me.

Maybe they will give us free bumpers to cover the problem spots. And if your screen is defective they will give you $20. Woo!! NOT!!

UPDATE: Apple is overnighting me a brand new iPhone and throwing in an extra cable, adapter, and headphone set. I cannot be happier.

Be sure to report your problem! The senior advisor also wanted me to send pictures to him, which was no problem for documentation.

You hit the jackpot! I've been fortunate that I don't have any problems with mine though :D.

My guess is Apple is gathering serial numbers and batch numbers. They will trace this back to one manufacturing line in one factory. Firings will follow. I received a black iPhone today and its immaculate, and tough. Others here have indicated the same. So it's unlikely that all black phones do this. It also seems Apple is ready and willing to make good with customers over this. If I had this issue, I'd be calling them and getting it seen to.

Now someone that was getting theirs in October is getting pushed to November! Someone's gonna be pissed! :p

I assume that this will only work with you ordered directly from Apple
I doubt it. Apple is the company standing behind your warranty. Shouldn't matter where you bought it. I got a bad 4S from AT&T last year. Called Apple, got a replacement the next day.

I have a scratch on my black one...I have an appointment with the Genius Bar anyways to add AppleCare+ next week so I am going to talk to him then and see if he will give me a replacement. If not I won't worry about it and get a new one later on with AppleCare+

Took mine back to the retail store and they swapped it straight away. Said they'd had several others like it.

New one is flawless on the outside, but has a super tiny speck of dust under the screen. I just can't win. Keeping this one though. Don't want to take it back yet again and officially become "one of those guys."

Disappointed to see several blemishes along the right side bezel. Visited the Apple Store today for an exchange. The staff were happy to exchange but did not have stock of thr AT&T black 32GB unfortunately. :(
