Telling the automated system "replace damaged iphone" has them transfer you to Apple Care which is closed. I just scheduled an appointment for them to call me tomorrow.

Don't say that. Just say iPhone not working. It will transfer you to tech then.

Thanks OP. Was disappointed to find on close inspection a small dent on the corner near the headphone jack. no black scratching off (yet).... on hold with AppleCare, going to ask for a while one (I'd rather have black with aluminum instead of white/aluminum or black/slate...)
Good luck!

@All - Please only do this if you really have issues. It is dishonest if you are just doing this to get a new device because you dropped it or broke it.

aah I initially was on hold almost 20 minutes after saying 'help with recent order', saw this post and hung up and called back to say iphone not working. got message that tech support is closed :) now waiting back on 'help with recent order' queue

to clarify, it wasn't damage caused by me. the dent (if thats what it even is) doesnt extend into the bevelled edge of the aluminum, it's only really visible as you hold the phone so light shines off the side. Wasn't even going to call until I saw this thread

Just got off the phone with Apple and they said it would take a week to get me a new one. They recommended I go to the store and swap it out. What a waste of time. Stayed up till midnight so I have to walk in to the store and get a phone that isn't all scratched up.

My Black/Slate iPhone5 had a small dent in the middle on the back metal casing, just waiting for AppleCare to open up.

If they cannot offer me a replacement, I will return the iPhone under my 14 days return policy, and wait a few weeks for new batches to come through.

Wow an hour into the call with a helpful rep, had me on hold for a min and now it's saying "please renter the representatives extension" over and over again,

Sure hope he calls back.

saw some cosmetic issues when I went to look at the displays (all black section)

UPDATE: Apple is overnighting me a brand new iPhone and throwing in an extra cable, adapter, and headphone set. I cannot be happier.

Wouldn't you be happier if you received a quality, defect-free product in the first place?

LOL @ :apple:

Be sure to report your problem! The senior advisor also wanted me to send pictures to him, which was no problem for documentation.

That's ****** awesome. "Good job, good effort"

30 minutes into the next call, am told I need to call back tomorrow to speak with apple care. Sigh, maybe ill just live with the dent and eventual silver scratches

I got a black 16GB from Apple and it showed up flawless. I inspected the whole phone and couldn't find one blemish or dent. I hope Apple makes everything right with the people who received damaged phones.

Samsunglovamuch?

WTH(eck) are you talking about? I'm holding my brand new Verizon white 64gb iPhone 5 that cost me $455.79, as I type this on my MAC with my iPhone 4 sitting in a shipping box.

Just because I want to "pause" b4 praising (or bashing) Apple about their handling of this, does not make me a hater (Or Samsung lover). It just means I'm not drunk on the apple juice. Maybe you should refrain from labeling people b4 you know the facts. Just like I will not jump all over Apple until we all see clearly how Apple will handle this.

Oh, and the only Samsung product I own is a 60 plasma!!

I am really glad that Apple are looking into this. I really, really hope that they can get Foxconn to sort out what batches are dodgy and what batches aren't (if that's the case).

I lined up all night and spent $1000 on a phone, I haven't opened it yet though. I didn't expect this ****.

I wonder if the black ones having "dings" is much less because they can spot a ding on it easier. No employee can spend as much time as we do looking at at single phone. So with the black they can quickly spot defects. The whites its "do the best ya can"

Let the OCD begin. This was predictable as the sun coming up the next day. My favorite is I think I have a super tiny speck under the screen!

I feel sorry for you all as I slipped mine in the Sedio Surface case with holster and have done nothing but enjoy my new 5. :p

Maybe they will give us free bumpers to cover the problem spots. And if your screen is defective they will give you $20. Woo!! NOT!!

I'm sure you know how bad the iPhone 4's look when dirt gets behind the bumpers. I can't imagine what these will look like when that happens.

I found this bit of news on a german Apple fan page. I don't know how reliable that website is and cannot confirm if this news tidbit is actually true, nor can I confirm its validity, but I thought I'd share it here nonetheless - this is a rough translation from german into english:

"When calling the Apple hotline I was told that the iPhone 5 devices with scuffs and scratches come from one specific batch and will be replaced by Apple. The problem is known to the company and apparently stems from a defective production machine. The affected devices can be identified based on their serial numbers, and only these faulty devices are eligible for return and exchange. As an alternative, a discount from the Apple hotline is offered. If you can live with the scratch or damage, this is a great way to save some money."

Maybe this was done on purpose by the workers at Foxconn. Instead of protesting maybe they thought that they would do a horrible job with the iPhone 5 so that Apple would file multiple complaints against Foxconn. Honetly, I wouldn't mind if Apple charged a little extra money for the iPhones to be made in the US.
