The screen on the N7 is higher resolution though.

Kids couldn't care less, neither could the wife. For example we both have an Iphone 4s and compared to the 4 and 3 the screen is better to me, but to them they simply didn't notice and/or do not care.

A better resolution without the games is worse than lower resolution with the games. The ability to play their friends, brother is more important than the screen. The fact that my wife can pick up any device and have the info she needs is more important.

Then again i use an iMac and I know there are better spec computers that exist. It simply is not my top priority.

Are you planning to actually buy a Mini for your wife or more importantly your kids? I looking to buy a 7" tablet for each of my kids this Christmas...I gotta say, I am having a hard time justifying the $329 cost...my kids, probably like most kids their age (9-11), just want to be able to play a few (mostly free) games, to be able to watch a few movies (Netflix mostly) and maybe do some web browsing, email and texting...the Nexus 7 for $199 seem like all I require to meet those needs...

Yea, it's like getting your son a Wii because it's cheaper, when he actually wants to play all the Xbox or PS3 exclusives. Really really smart.

The only reason that the iPad mini exists is because of the price. There is absolutely no need for the iPad mini. It's a completely useless device.

For people with an iPad, why would you even think of getting the iPad mini?

It's just made for people who wants an iPad, but can't afford one. Or it's just for people who really are bugged by the size of the original iPad, which I highly doubt that.

I'm getting both the Mini and the 4. Why? Because my "big" iPad covers the more intensive stuff, works as my drawing tablet, and handles the heavier tasks.

The Mini will be my "carry around" device. I'm guessing it'll be small enough to slip into a back pocket for when I'm out of the house, and it's lightweight - less than half the weight of the iPad 4.

Both have their purpose, and the mini is FAR from a "completely useless device".

The iPad Mini is not made for people who already own an iPad. It is like the 13" and 15" Macbook Pro. Some people want a larger screen and are willing to sacrifice a little portability.

Same case here - some people want a device that weighs less and is smaller. I personally bought an 11" Macbook air and my iPad usage has dropped significantly, because they are too similar in size. I am considering selling my iPad and going mini because I would use the Mini more because of the significant size difference.

You used the screen size as a reason why the N7 was cheaper, i was just saying that even though the screen may be smaller it's not inferior but maybe actually better.

Maybe I am falling for the marketing hype, but Phil used three or 4 different sites I use and they simply are better on the iPad. Tripadvisor, yelp, etc. You can see more of the webpage on the ipad. Movies on a bigger screen are better for the kids. They don't care about resolution as much.

I also never stated why the Nexus was cheaper. I simply said it was cheaper. I apologize if I led you to believe that. i don't know why it is cheaper. I do know the ipad mini has a bigger screen. I also never called the screen inferior (other than size) on the Nexus.

My wife and kids don't even care about HD at home. I can't tell you how many times I come home and they are watching a channel in non hD even though they could be watching it in HD.

That's not true at all. I find that unless a smartphone is the size of the note or you have little fingers - web browsing is useless. It's why you need basic apps in the first place on an iphone.

I have been waiting for a device with a decent screen that is LTE data enabled for a while now. Something that even my wife can carry in her handbag. We are now going to switch to back to dummy phones that have a good 20 day standby, and purchase two mini's (with data) and a regular ipad with data.

Prior to this, I was considering the new Samsung Note II, which has stellar performance, great screen size, and is portable.

This is true too. One of my favorite tablets is the 7inch blackberry Playbook. Great size and awesome functionality. What's missing from it is decent apps like Netflix and 4G data.

Yes. Spend $129 for a larger screen and that I don't have to spend $100 or so on Apps right off the bat + an unknown amount of $ into the future every time we buy an app (for example FIFA 13 - $7 x 1 time instead of 2).

We probably spend $10 or so per month on apps and/or games so that saves $120 per year give or take.

Oh and all of the other things written above such as Facetime which the kids do with their grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.

Fair enough, if you spend that much in the app store then you should get a mini. For me its a non-issue because I don't buy a whole lot of apps.

Have fun with your Mini!

He has both a Wii and a PS3...and a Touch...I am not cheap; I am not stupid; I am not clueless as to the wants and needs of my kids...however your post is....stupid and clueless that is...

I am not trying to convince anyone to get a Nexus over a iPad mini or vice versa. I was simply trying to point out why it is perfect for us and why the price difference is not as much as people may think. For others the price difference might be what has been stated.

Considering what your kid wants to do it, a Nexus would the low rent equivalent. Most of the games will either be unavailable for Android, or plainly run like crap.

The situation applies even more so in general apps - Android doesn't have any good optimized Tablet apps.

You ARE cheap, and you are clearly being clueless trying to save $130 on the device.

Do tell me, what games do my kids want to play?

I agree having both a "full" size tab and a mini is a bit silly. I don't agree that a iPad mini is un-needed, i have a N7 and is far better for carrying around with me and using when in bed as i find a "full" size tab a little cumbersome to take out and about and a little bulky to be in bed with. I don't personally feel the iPad Mini is a good device though as i feel Apple have'nt been innovative with it and are using it as a cashcow.

Riptide plays better on my Nexus 7 than on my iPad 3.

You say cheap...I say educated and informed consumer...trust me, i have the extra $130 to spend...I am just trying to understand the value in the extra $130...and so far, I just don't see it...for me, in my case...I am not trashing Apple or the Mini in anyway...I am more than open-minded about all of this and would love nothing more to be convinced otherwise, but so far I just heard anything to change my mind...

I can picture Apple tugging on those iPad Mini fanboy's udders and the bucket overflowing with cash.......

I bet they had a meeting and said lets makes the mini as cheap as we possibly can with 2 year old internals and a mediocre display and slap a big premium on it, 2 month before christmas.... $$$$$$

Hah, if you don't see the value in it, I don't understand why you would even bother owning any Apple products. Apple has always been about quality build, quality software, quality user experience, unparalleled customer support and product support. And customers pay their money for it, if it was free, Apple wouldn't be the most valued company on Earth right now.

Please, save your $130 and buy the Nexus. Then you can put your money where your mouth is and evaluate the true value of the device. No one is stopping you, the Nexus is readily available in brick and mortar stores.

Funny all the talk about the mini. I offered my 2 teenage boys and iPad or iPad Mini for Xmas and they both declined. Here's their reasoning. We purchased them both an iPod Touch 4th Gen 64GB back when they first came out. Both boys use them virtually every day. Both have hundreds of games and apps on them. They declined because they like the portability of their iPod's as the can carry them in their pockets. Hence them declining the offer which totally made sense to me. But I can certainly see a lot of women liking the idea of it fitting the mini in their purses. The only reason we have an iPad is due to the fact that my DW and I both have bad eyesight so it is easier to read on larger screen. Boys never use it at all.

I bet they would love a new iPhone 5 to replace those iPod Touches. Then, they'll probably want new iPads to watch videos and read books.

As I stated earlier in this thread, I understand and appreciate the value of Apple and their ecosystem ...I love my iPad, I love my iPhone...my kids love their iPod Touch and my iPhone and iPad...I sure they would love an iPad Mini...just as they would love an iMac 27...I am sorry this upsets you, but those last two aren't happening...not this holiday season...

For the life of me, I can't understand why you are so worked up over my desire to buy my kids a (hopefully) cool, high tech gift this xmas for under or about $250...which unfortunately pretty much disqualifies the iPad Mini right off the bat...how old are you; do you have a job? Are you hoping mommy and daddy will buy you a iPad Mini this Christmas and you're scared your parents might feel the same way I do?

Oh look, you arbitrarily deemed a &250 cut-off point for your kids yet claim to not be a cheapo, and then attack my purchasing ability? Sorry buddy, I work and attend a Graduate program at an Ivy, I have no such limitations on buying apple products. I have one of just about everything they make, and it's nice that they all have a use for work or play.

But feel free to buy an inferior product by saving a few bucks. That's why we're all posting here on Macrumors after all isn't it? Hah!

What is &250? Is that an "Ivy" code?
