The only reason that the iPad mini exists is because of the price. There is absolutely no need for the iPad mini. It's a completely useless device.

For people with an iPad, why would you even think of getting the iPad mini?

It's just made for people who wants an iPad, but can't afford one. Or it's just for people who really are bugged by the size of the original iPad, which I highly doubt that.

The iPad is a good size for working on. But when I got a very portable laptop, the standard iPad became just something to read and browse on and from then on I wanted a smaller iPad. Something that's more comfortable to hold. So some people, depending on their uses, will be bugged by the size of the original iPad, whether you highly doubt it or not.

Same here. Since I got my 11' MBAir, I barely touched my IPad. For intensive work, I use my powerful iMac, for normal work I use my Air. For checking email or quick web surfing I actually use my IP5. I always want to have theist updated and latest technology, but then realize that size DOES matter. iPad is something fun to have, but the original size is no longer attractive to me.

I've been missing the joke in some dry deadpan humor lately, so pardon me if this is a joke and I don't get it. If not though, nice troll.

The only reason for this downsized ipad is because of the market share that Apple has been unable to share with Amazon, et al. due to form factor. Just chasing the market is all. Nothing wrong with that. Not very Jobsian, but nothing wrong with it.

The e-reader format is quite nice, as many have discovered, including Apple recently.

Oh look, you arbitrarily deemed a &250 cut-off point for your kids yet claim to not be a cheapo, and then attack my purchasing ability? Sorry buddy, I work and attend a Graduate program at an Ivy, I have no such limitations on buying apple products. I have one of just about everything they make, and it's nice that they all have a use for work or play.

But feel free to buy an inferior product by saving a few bucks. That's why we're all posting here on Macrumors after all isn't it? Hah!

First, my $250-ish limit is not arbitrary...outside the obvious reason for that figure, I, like most people outside of Ivy, have to live within their means...that requires setting limits and budgets; it means making informed choices about how they spend their money and on what they spend their money on...yes, technically I have the money to buy both my kids iPad Minis...however, practically I just don't see it happening...I have a certain, set amount of money to spend on Christmas; spending that much money on a single gift - a gift that (in my case) quite frankly is just another "toy," just isn't part of our game plan...you see, my kids want lots other toys as well...Legos, American Girl crap, Nerf guns, American Girl stuff, video games, sports gear...did I mention American Girl junk? We like to spread things around a bit...it's just how we are...if you want to criticize or look down on us for that, feel free...

Second, I wasn't attacking your purchasing ability, I was attacking your inability to behave and converse like a lucid adult....

Third, I am not your buddy...

Fourth, I agree that the Nexus7 is an inferior product compared the Ipad Mini in many ways; although I am not even sure it's a fair comparison...once again, I am under no illusion as to quality and superiority of Apple products; I am sure the iPad Mini is no exception...however, most things are an inferior product to something else...French's Mustard is an inferior product to Gray Poupon; that doesn't mean people who use French's are stupid, cheap, unhappy or unsatisfied...

Fifth, Hah!

Agree 100%
Well said.

I disagree 100%. I had an iPad 3 (now sold) and will be getting the mini. I must be mad. Go figure.

(Joking aside, it is because the iPad 3 is too heavy and too large. Mini form factor is perfect for me.)

What's so hard to understand? Both products have it's market and place.

New 9.7 iPad = For home (couch) or Office.

New Mini iPad = Great for on the go, especially with 4G data.

The standard iPad was always too big to carry around with you. Whereas, the mini is perfect and portable.

good thing i sold my ipad 2 3months ago. definitely will buy the mini. ipad 4 is too big and heavy for me.

My wife and kids don't even care about HD at home. I can't tell you how many times I come home and they are watching a channel in non hD even though they could be watching it in HD.
My 9-year old and 11-year old flat out will NOT watch tv that isn't in High Def...my wife is pretty much the same way. Spoiled, I guess.

Point is, every family is different. My kids pay attention to detail when it comes to stuff like this. Of course, they are sports minded and sports always look better in HD, but they notice these things.

----------

You say cheap...I say educated and informed consumer...trust me, i have the extra $130 to spend...I am just trying to understand the value in the extra $130...and so far, I just don't see it...for me, in my case...I am not trashing Apple or the Mini in anyway...I am more than open-minded about all of this and would love nothing more to be convinced otherwise, but so far I just heard anything to change my mind...
These, to me, are the comments of an intelligent person. I personally cannot believe the way you are being depicted, but believe me, you are coming across as the more intelligent person, by a landslide.

I wouldn't lend the name of your "Ivy" institution so as not to thoroughly embarrass the school.

There is absolutely nothing intelligent about your posts in this thread. Nothing.

I want the iPad mini because of the size. Although it is more convenient than pulling out a laptop while at the airport, for example, it was still inconvenient to hold something quite as large and heavy as the full-size iPad. I own a 27" iMac for use while at my home office, a 13" windows laptop (company issued) for either the company office or hotel room when traveling, an iPhone 4S for doing stuff small like quick emails or surfing the web for something quickly, and a full-size iPad for all other times (while at the airport, on the plane, at a conference show, sitting on my couch, waiting in line for something, going to the park and reading, while laying in bed, etc). The iPad mini will fill the gap much better than the full-sized iPad and I am very excited about it! :D

Well, sorry to burst your bubble, but I'm a person that can afford an iPad, hell I even used to own one. I'm not looking for another full size iPad, but I love a lot about them, except their size. I want (and am willing to pay for it, which is why I'm not going with the Kindle Fire HD or B&N Nook HD) a smaller tablet which runs iOS. This may not fit with your view of the world, and if it doesn't, I hope you take a moment to reflect on it and learn something, and to stop making silly claims such as, "it's a completely useless device." It's not only silly, but it's so easily disproved by just one person finding it useful.

I don't own an iPad and never have. The iPad Mini is perfect for me.

I don't have to spend too much money on it, I don't care what chip it has, I already own an iPhone so I just add the $20 tethering plan and can avoid buying a cellular iPad. The size is great, and Retina doesn't really matter to me.

It's quite simple and people should stop complaining. The Nexus is garbage and $30 extra won't kill anyone.

The one thing we should all be able to agree on is that the pricing is ridiculous.

$299 is acceptable and rational, considering yesteryear's specs.
$399 is acceptable for the 4G data versions.

However, Apples knows we will buy them at their prices, as there are no other real competitors out there. That's the reality.

What's amazing is that the cellular carriers will discount the iPhones like no tomorrow, yet don't make any effort with regards to the cellular tablets.

I didn't attend an Ivy league school and probably already receive a higher salary than you will most likely ever make but I still understand that there is a difference between getting a kid what they will and will not use. Why not just get them the 64GB LTE version while at it, to avoid being a 'cheapo'. If you don't set a boundry for what you will and will not get, where is the limit? For all you know, he was planning on only spending $200 but was willing to go up to $250 if needed!

And for the record, if you own "just about everything they (apple) make", you're an idiot... Why would you need 3 different types of desktops, 4 different laptops, 5 different iPods, and an iPad for?

Extra $30? I am not sure I understand that number...if the price difference between the Nexus 7 and the Mini was just $30, I'd be all over that...

I'll say it again. I'll take extremely light over Retina display any day. That's just me. It's just a little over half a pound. That's spectacular.

Agreed, I would be willing to carry it around a lot more than my iPad 2. I love my iPad, but I just do not use it as much as I would like because I don't carry it around with me all the time.

My 9-year old and 11-year old flat out will NOT watch tv that isn't in High Def...my wife is pretty much the same way. Spoiled, I guess.

You make a lot of good points, every person is different. For my girlfriend, it is all about ease of operation. She would be happy if I gave her a Nexus 7, but would constantly be frustrated because she has never used an Android product.

The iPad Mini is worth the extra money for her because she likes iOS and she is very comfortable using it. We have a decent collection of iBooks as well, not sure if its possible to use them on Android in anyway though. So that may be another reason to stick with the Mini.

It is worth the extra money for me (since its a Christmas Present) because I would have to teach her how to use it :p

French's Mustard is an inferior product to Gray Poupon; that doesn't mean people who use French's are stupid, cheap, unhappy or unsatisfied...

This reminded me of those commercials, lol.

I think they meant extra $30 as in $329 in $30 more than $299...

I have waited for a smaller iOS tablet and now that it is an option to purchase, will do just that. I could have purchased a full sized iPad at any time but always held back due to portability concerns. I have had a Kindle for years but don't read from the Kindle app on the iPhone because it is too small - it will be perfect on the mini. I didn't carry the Kindle around all the time because of limited use as I don't always have time to read when I am out but would like something a little larger than my phone when checking stuff online when I have a few free minutes. I am not a power user but want to do more, keep it portable and still have access to my already well used and loved iOS apps. The mini will serve my purpose more than than the iPad or iPhone especially for quick Internet use. I am happy to have this as an option and will preorder.

Thanks, but still confused...I get the $329 number (Ipad Mini), but not the $299...the equivalent (storage-wise) Nexus 7 is $249; soon to be $199, if the rumors are to be believed...

People were hoping it would be $299 (myself included), so maybe it is that.

I think they should have offered an 8 GB option for $279, $289, or even $299... It would allow them to say "iPad Mini - Starting at $279" (or whichever). There are plenty of 8 GB tablets available.

Gotta ya, thanks...I agree...I too was hoping it would come under the $300 mark...There is something both real and psychological about that mark imo...had it gone under that mark, I might still be considering it...

A data plan on a tablet is only 10 bucks so they don't really need to subsidize the price on the tablet.

I'm sorry, but your argument is based on one very faulty assumption (which many on these forums seem to share) - that everybody has the same needs and wants as you.

My wife has a 3rd gen. iPad, I have a 2nd gen. iPad, and we are both trading in for iPad Minis. Simple reason: The size of it really does matter to us. We both primarily use ours in bed for reading, casual web browsing & social media, and occasionally a non-graphics-intensive game.

For these activities we want a device that is comfortable to hold for several hours in one hand. Have we been doing fine with our 9.7" iPads? Sure, they're great devices, and you can lay on your back and rest them on your torso in bed fairly comfortably. But we both want it to be lighter and smaller. The retina display and faster processor on my wife's 3rd gen is nice and I understand why that's a priority for some people.

However, the processor speed and ppi is NOT a priority for everyone.

If that doesn't compute, sorry, I don't know how to make it any simpler. Some people see it as a "downgrade" from 3rd gen. to iPad Mini. If your personal needs are graphics and processing speed, then yes, it is a downgrade. If you are simply preoccupied with "stats" for no reason except that you want the highest numbers regardless of your needs, that's silly.

For the people signing up now... With share everything, why not just tether? Save the $10... maybe put it towards more data?

Verizon includes Tethering... AT&T does too right? I have never understood why they charge people extra for tethering who have fixed data plans... I have 2 GB of data per month, why should they be able to tell me how I can use those 2 GB.

I am much more understanding towards the unlimited data plans and tethering.

Well this is coming strickly from the I want to use my iPad without tethering. If you want to tether just buy the wifi only model and save $100.
