I thought they would sort it out with the Xs but Google kept their lead. And the fact that Apple rarely updates the algorithm mid-cycle means we have to wait for next year's iPhones again.

So for now, Pixel 3 for stills. iPhone for video.

Interesting what they pulled off, but to me that would get old real fast. I want my nighttime photos to look like nighttime photos, which these low light photos on the Pixel do not. But it's clearly a useful feature, like Smart HDR.

And, imo, this does not make the camera better. I still think for all around photography the Xs is better, which means the thread title is a bit hyperbolic.

I’m sure most iPhone users don’t have apple watches or Macs. I know I don’t and most people are the same. So your comment is quite a bit irrelevant.

Not as irrelevant as you would like to think probably. "Apple sold eight million Apple Watches in the final quarter of 2017, the most since the product was introduced and the highest number of shipments in a single quarter for any wearable vendor, according to new estimates from Canalys and IDC." from Apple Is Officially Taking Over the Watch Business.

No you're not. You are being condescending and you know it.

How were you thwarted? iOS setup is very simple. I am sensing a pattern here...you are used to cheap phones and don't seem to be very adept at the simplest of tasks. There is a problem here for you and it isn't the phone.

This tells me all I need to know about your "interest."
You have misinterpreted what I said. I want to use an iPhone, I really do. I am competent in IT. I have worked with IT for many years. In recent years I always buy flagships - where do you get 'cheap phones' from? I'm fed up with Google's data gathering shenanigans. I have moved my calendar and contacts away from Google, I use Firefox as my browser and Startpage as my search engine. I use an Android phone so Google still knows too much about me. I bought an iPhone to make a final escape.

If I can replicate most of the functionality I am used to I will try it again. For starters two things I use a lot. An Alexa shopping list and a nice agenda view of my calendar. How can I achieve this? I put Todoist in the widget pane but there seemd to be no option to have it display a particular list. By default it displays the top level todo list - so to use it while shopping I'd have to click on it and then select my list - which is no different to opening the app itself on my homescreen. The calendar widget was also not useful - I could not achieve the simple agenda view I wanted.

I'd like a calendar view in the iOS widget drawer like on my Android homescreen here:

This comment makes no sense. Why would you not want all your devices to work seamlessly? Having iOS here, android there, windowsOS there would be a massive headache. Dont understand your argument....
You get to the stage where you couldn't change your phone because you have too many other things that would break if you switched. It is pretty much accepted that Apple sucks you in to its ecosystem and tries to keep you there. If you have, say, Chromecast you can use that on either Android or iOS.

And how many iPhones in the same period? 100M? Probably more. The percentage of people that use both is in the single digits of the total iPhone users

As a consumer, you should be thankful the competition is this intense instead of throwing stones. Google is doing amazing things with computational photography, and currently has Apple handily beat on low light algorithms. However, Apple is kicking Google's arse in other areas, most notably the quality of its OS and the integration with the hardware. Apple's silicon design group is making custom CPU, GPU, and AI processors and Google is doing nothing of the sort. Apple is well-positioned to implement a similar, perhaps much better, low-light algorithm as well. The future will hold amazing things from both companies.

Couldn't agree with this more.. competition keeps the cake fresh and moist.

So serious question - what is the point of night sight? When have you ever been looking at a dark alleyway and thought - man I really want an almost usable image of this?

This isn't going to work well for people because both the camera and the subject have to stay still for 5-6 seconds and if they move it will just end up a blurry mess.

It is a cool feature to show off, but in reality it is just a gimmick.

Terrific post, I'm all in on Apple, but appreciate the services (and science) happening at Google.

Thanks for the quote - missed this outstanding post on the first read through

If you click on show more it will show you more events.

There's actually two different Apple Calendar widgets: 'Up Next' and 'Calender', the latter is more along the lines of the "agenda view" @scgf was asking about. I use Google Calendar and their widget is also a multi-day, agenda type view. :)

Well that depends on the person and situation, scenario they're in. May be awesome at Halloween for the kids..may be good for dark areas during New Year's Eve.. On the flip side, if there's some mischief happening, cops-lawyers-courts would be blessed to have such clarity upon them.

So the Pixel camera is better in some areas.

Mind you, quality aside, I would be more concerned that the risk of the location I am taking the images and in fact the images themselves being shared is higher with Android than iOS, even though I tell them not to share anything. Need to make up the revenue difference on their cheaper handsets somehow.

The camera is very important to me but not enough to make me switch to the pixel. The camera on my max is very good and there are other features on the iphone/ecosystem that are also important.

Never said I would switch to the Pixel. Just said that the camera is important to me.

Well most here dont really value the camera.....Like I said the camera is only a year behind...so if you are looking for this then come back in 2019.......But lets talk about how great the Emojii are tho..... Apple emojii best among all phones.
Again, I was only responding to "the camera is not important remark....I think more people value the camera than you realize. I love Apple would never jump ship but I would never buy a phone for it's emojiis, lol. The camera on the other hand has me and is the first thing I look at when deciding to upgrade or not now that I do not upgrade every year.

You might want to try widgets from some other third party calendar and reminder apps. For example, Agenda+ and Reminder+ both might do the type of things that you are looking for.

I get tickled and mildly irritated when I hear of the ongoing "Apple should do this and do that to catch up with Android". They are both powerhouses in their own right and both bring something to the table that the other doesn't. Also both have their own following and fanbase. I think iPhone and Android are more divisive in todays society than Democrats and Republicans LOL

All I pointed out was that apps have been able to do this for years, which you now admit to, whether a tripod is needed or not. Me not caring about taking pictures at night is why I don’t use the apps, but they obviously do the same thing. It’s nothing amazing, but it’s nice you finally have the feature.

This guy is super funny.
I love my iPhone, but what those apps do is bs.
You need a tripod, exposure time is limited on iOS to 1/3 seconds.
You’d only get a crappy picture.
Apple can do that for years. Muhahahha.
You can’t even conceive to compare the results.
Pixel is the boss here.

Yeah.. this isn’t about seamless integration... this is like Apple losing cpu crown to competitors and running like a slog compared to top performing phones

Did forget the /s?. Apple since they went to 64bit on mobile side has been ahead of the cpu game. Probably a year or 2 ahead.

Guess maybe you can say that if you think them speed test of people opening 20 apps on YouTube is actually testing the cpu. Sureee but it’s not

I’ve already said the Pixel implementation is better. I just don’t think one feature means Apple is embarrisngpy behind when it comes to smartphone photography.

Great video comparison here.

By Apple Insider... I mean pick a review that comes across as independent :)

Really though, go visit Android Central, it's full of threads just like Mac Rumours. A doesn't work, B is faulty, C is better than the iPhone etc...

Different forum and product, all the same threads, some happy with the Pixel, some not.
