People, myself included, are expecting some iOS5 news in the near future because this is the way Apple has functioned for the last 3 years. A new major revision of iOS has been released every June/July, with a developer preview in March. I doubt there will be any point releases past 4.3.

The question is: will they roll together the iOS5 preview event with the iPad announcement, or schedule a separate iOS5/Lion preview even later in March/April.

I think we will definitely see form of iOS5 next week ... the title of the event says it all: "Come see what 2011 will be the year of"

It doesn't say that it will be Just an iPad event.
Plus I dont think that Apple will have 2 events in one month. They always do their Dev preview of iOSis usually in March.
All this is pointing to more then just an iPad event I think :)
Lets just hope that the new A4 SoC rumor is not true ... and that it will have a brand new A5.

Also the Image for the event ... shows half of the iPad has Glare on the screen ... and the other half doesn't ... Wich is maybe a way for them to tease us for this "New screen" rumor that got out of control being Retina. Maybe they are really adding that new Samsung PLS screen with less Glare and much better color !

Guarantee that it will be available sometime after March 8 or 9. Likely the week of March 14-18.........

Now.....what'll it include?
I bet they go with current iPad 16MB at $379.00 price range.............new iPad 2 at 32MB, 64MB 128MB at former 499/599/699 price points. 3G's contain both GSM/CDMA combo, Ships with IOS 4.3 (also available to other devices in same timeframe), 1.3MP front facing-camera and no back-facing camera, NO SD slot, enhanced sound, same screen resolution, lighter weight with composite back, and........

What's the ONE MORE THING?

Also........
MBP refresh
IOS 4.3
White iPhone 4

That would make the 16GB model a steal, since there would be practically no upgrades in the 2. More memory and a camera?

Though that is Apple's history of upgrades.

and why do people keep bringing up Apple's "one more thing" when's the last time they even did that? .. it's probably been YEARS

So could it be that mysterious mdp size hole in the iPad 2 case design is meant for tge integration of light peak into the mdp in the new MacBooks? Is this why they timed things like this? Can we expect the iPad 2 to no longer be an oversized iPhone and now be a portable external touch screen?

Thats a very forward thinking and interesting concept, I might have to agree with you on this.

It will be the year of disappointment if they don't deliver the 2X resolution screen.

So it's going to be the year of disappointment. Sometimes I see where the hype comes from but if the rumors are true it's going to be nothing special. It's terrible that sometimes buying their products makes sense and sometimes it is just obvious they are holding back so they have more to put in the next generation. They knew before they made the original iPad that there was going to be cameras in iPad 2, but why not just put them in the original iPad. Oh because then they'd have less to put in the next one.

Will they release the iPad2 march the 3rd??? Just great news! I hope Steve visit the event

I couldn't agree more.....

Already trained myself into not getting one unless a) very big spec increase and b) cheaper than last one.

If neither, going save up and get a MacBook Air next year. So Apple will get my money at some point. Lol

Steve on podium:

-Bla bla bla
-Last year we had the iPad.
-isn't it great?
-We think so to.
-We find it bla bla bla
-So we didn't seem a reason to change it.
-But added something.
- ***** picture of camera in ipad *****
-(audience) ahhhh. (asks there fellow journalist if he also thinks that it looks like the old one)
-Steve smiles and looks around.
-Yes you now can use facetime over al your devices.
-And we could even make is cheaper.
-They now start at 50$ less.

It is interesting they chose to use the iPhone 4 background...

They already use the same version of iOS so it can't be symbolic of that. It is possible this thing will actually have a higher resolution screen? Don't want to get my hopes up.

This will be an instant buy of course, just hopeful regardless.

I guess there's not going to be any reduction in bezel size then.

Tony

Do you not understand why the bezel size is the way it is? Do you own one? I would think not, because if you did, you would understand why they carefully picked that size of the bezel. touchscreens do not work well when the hand/fingers you are holding it with are touching the actual screen.....These people in these forums are driving me crazy!

This. Why is everyone waiting for iOS 5? What happened to 4.3-4.9? Aren't there enough significant improvements in iOS generations to wonder? It's like asking "When is Mac OS 11.0 coming out? Hopefully they'll preview it next wednesday" There's plenty left between 4.3 and 5.0. Just saying.

My guess as to why iOS 5 is important is because Apple is very unlikely to do a UI overhaul in a point release, and unless I've been reading thing incorrectly, an updated UI is the best bet against the competition.

Agreed.

Better specs is one thing but a better user experience that only apple an deliver through improved iOS is a big deal.

I'm just saying that they could announce the ipads now and then make them come out at june... I'm just saying (I don't know if anyone has said this but I want to point it out anyway)

Could they do this? Sure. Are they likely to? I think not. This would be a terrible decision from a PR standpoint, not to mention the negative impact on iPad sales between now and then.

I've only always wanted 4 things from this update:

128 GB Flash (or SD that could store and access music and video), 4G, a smaller 7" or 8" form factor, and 512+ RAM. I'll get the latter but not the other three.

well, at least you're realistic about what you'll likely get, though I'd expect that 128 GB is within reason to hope for.

I could care less abour a camera (absolutely no use), increase processor speed (nice but speed is currently not really an issue), or Light Peak (what the heck would THAT be used for anyway).

Probably wait for the iPad 3 or go with Xoom.

Tony

Uh... I think you mean that you couldn't care less. In any event, I appreciate that what you meant is that those features are of no use to you, not that they are of "absolutely no use". However there are others who can imagine usefulness in the features that you're dismissing.
