In my opinion, this just proves that Apple sometimes has no coherent naming policy at all. While the iPhone 4 was the first iPhone to be named after its generation, the 4S already broke that rule by referring to its technical aspects instead of its generation (a faster iPhone 4, hence 4S). If you compare this to the iPad, while the second iPad followed the iPhone naming policy, the third iPad was simply called ‘the new iPad’ instead. So even for the iPad the naming policy has changed.

Because of this, I think that Apple tends to come up with a name that fits depending on the circumstances. In the media, there have been so many claims about this ‘iPhone 5’ even before the iPhone 4S was announced. Looking back at the overall disappointment that was expressed, the public may still expect a ‘true’ iPhone 5 after all, even though it would make no sense generation-wise. Considering this, I suppose Apple could just go along with the name that everyone is expecting anyway.

It could also be that Apple is just playing with us. Apple has on several occasions placed subtle hints on its invitations. It could be that the 5 is just a hint to the next iPhone, since everyone is expecting the ‘iPhone 5’, thus symbolically pointing to the iPhone. That does not mean that it could not have a different name.

I don't think they named the iPhone 4 because of its generation. It just happens to be the number after 3. I think Apple follows a general naming pattern - counting up numbers of "major" releases while adding the GS or S based on new features.

Alright guys. 13 pages of comments.

It is going to be called iPhone 5.

We're all well aware that it is the 6th generation.
Apple obviously has their own numbering scheme in mind and is not basing it on the "generation" but more of a sort of "product version" number.

Alright?

The 6th generation of the iPhone is called 'iPhone 5' and it is running the 6th revision of iOS called iOS 6...right.

Whatever.

I guess we can all end the 'iPhone 5' naming debate now. :D

OR... Apple could be playing a trick on us. It could mean there are gonna be 5 new products to be announced at once! Including the new iMac! Weee!! I know... I'm insane.

My 4S doesn't say that anywhere on the device. It only says iPhone. When they introduce it they will call it iPhone. At some point they will mention whatever name they decided on. It will be iPhone something. TV commercials will call it iPhone.

The full name won't really matter until it becomes the second tier device.

I think they renamed the iPad line to more closely associate with the MacBooks. Mini (Air) and Retina (Pro/Retina). There will most likely always be at least 3 iPhones sold in the marketplace so it makes no sense to drop the differentiator.

No, my guess is that they opted to drop the iPad '3' name because they had the iPad mini in development and it would make NO sense to continue calling the iPad numerically larger every year, and start the same trend with the iPad mini, that is most likely why they call the iPods the same way, no numerical number because there is the iPod Touch, iPod Nano, iPod Shuffle etc.

Nope, iPhone 4S. The 'S' stood for Siri. This was said by Tim Cook.

I did not know that. ;-) Still, the name refers to one of the iPhone’s features, not its generation (otherwise it would have been iPhone 5).

i don't feel like searching to find out why, so can someone fill me in on why people were saying it would be "6" prior to today?

that's about the dumbest thing i've heard!

Because it's the sixth iPhone Apple has made.

Personally I think that'd just confuse people. If they don't call it the 5 they'll go with "the new iPhone".

They aren't calling the it "the new iPhone" because there will always be at least3 iPhones in the marketplace at the same time. Imagine they start calling each one the new iPhone...and in two years you have 3 new iPhones to choose from. Might as well start naming them by the price!

And before some uses the iPad as an example, don't. The iPad will be the same as the MacBook. You'll have the mini (air) and the retina (pro) and each year a new one is released, the old one goes away. They won't continue to have older models on the market at the same time.

Um, you can still buy an iPad 2 on the Apple Store website...your logic negates yourself.

...and no it's not like the MacBook...when they come out with a new generation MacBook it's taken off the main store website, and only available via the clearance or refurb until supplies are gone.

There was never going to be an Apple phone that could be numerically identified as 666. This is America. The Revelations fans would freak on that one and Apple would spend the next few years fending off "mark of the beast" implications. Recall that P&G had several years of battles because a few curls in the hair on the old moon logo were perceived to be 3 sixes. Ultimately, P&G had to change the logo. We like our Apple logo "as is" right?

If named iPhone 6, this could have been a more unique invite idea

12 = date
10 = time
6 = iphone 6

I love all the "iPhone 5ers" on here gloating that they were right, and all the iPhone 6ers" eating crow . . .

Actually, we all lose because most of us thought it was going to be marketed as "the new iPhone" just like they did with the iPad.

It's just that the iPhone 6 trolls were quite incessant and adamant that it won't be called the iPhone 5.

Alright?

They have no numbering scheme. That is what people need to grasp.

Essentially what I mean. The point is, the iPhone is the only Apple device with multiple versions being sold and marketed at the same time with no other distinguishable differentiator (i.e. the thinness and size of the Air and iPad mini). That's why they'll keep the numbers.
