No surprise, as The iPhone 5 was named by my source

iPhone 5 official Test Unit
(note that the brushed metal, actually its just a SHELL, the real product is behind, hides some bisel)

I have no idea why people online don't get this: The overwhelming majority of people would expect the new iPhone to be a 5. The name of the current model is a 4x, and the one before that is a 3xx.

99.9% of people on the streets neither know nor care what 'generation' the phone is, what chip it has, what iOS it runs. Apple is a business and it's catering to what people want. If you argue that they should 'correctly' call it the 6, you're completely arguing against Apple's philosophy of making things accessible.

Not so much supporting your point as opposing the other guy. Both iPhone 4 models had A5 processors and run iOS 5. The 3GS runs iOS 6. I would not get to hung up on that.

If it is going to be called iPhone 5 because that's what everyone in the public expects, I hereby nominate we refer to the subsequent iPhone as "iPhone zeta Q: duckpants"

interesting. I felt certain the new iphone would just be called "The New iPhone". Would've made sense with the "New iPad"

How is naming the 6th iPhone the iPhone 5 not complicated? The only thing we all know for certain is the next iPhone will be the 6th one. What they call it is irrelevant.

What number comes after 4? Sure, Apple skipped the "iPhone 2," but it seems they want to keep the numbering system sequential.

5 devices

Maybe 5 is for 5 new devices. iPhone, iPad, iPod, iMac, Mac Mini or something else new

Last year it was 5th generation iPhone, with an A5 processor, running iOS 5 and 3G being called the iPhone 4s. Same thing right?
I guess it's because the numbers at the end of phones, like superficial redesigns are important to average consumers, and macs, iPods and iPads will continue without numbers.

Not the same thing. The name wasn't "iPhone 4"; it was iPhone 4S. That's like 50% of the "name addition".

It could be iPhone 5 or the invitation may just signify 5 years of the iPhone.

iOS 6 with iPhone 5?

I can't believe people actually thought it would be called the iPhone 6. Glad that argument's down the hatchet.

I don't see why people are so surprised that it may very well be called the iPhone 5. The iPad is different where the new naming scheme fits the device. I don't think that'd work with the iPhone.

And Apple named the 2nd one with a '3' in the name...

What makes you think the 6th would have a '6' in the name?

Anticipation builds....

I was secretly hoping Apple would hold the event on the 11th or 13th - just to screw with everyone.

I was secretly hoping Apple would name it the iPhone 4L which is what it really seems to be based on rumors.

Hahahahaha.... I love conspiracy theorists.

There is good and bad Apple news every day, so no matter what day Apple released, it would be to 'Take attention away from the Samsung Galaxy SIII numbers', 'iPhone 5 will fail, so Apple is hiding the invitations during the week of the Democratic convention', etc. etc.

IIRC, they announced the event for the iPad the same day as the State of the Union. I'm surprised they aren't being accused of trying to upstage the convention. :D

Product History: iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S

It would make more sense to call it the iPhone 6 or iPhone LTE.
