Not even, it would be a sixth screen size, 3GS, 4/4S, 5, iPad, New iPad and now this new potential iPad mini

universal app (facebook, twitter, games) devs are probably not going to be happy there

No. The iPad Mini (or Air, as Gruber says) will have the same resolution as the iPad so no reworking should be necessary as I understand it.

It may seem like excess today, but in the future these devices will be everywhere and people will have more than one. You'll attach them to walls and have them perform certain functions, you'll leave them in the living room because they perform a function there, you'll have some in the kitchen, because they do good there, some in the bathroom, some in the bedroom, and you get the idea. Who thought we'd ever have more than one television in a house, and look at where we are now. Even on the USS Enterprise they had these things scattered about like magazines at a doctor's office. If you imagine a use for one of each and you can afford them, I say go for it and enjoy both of them! :)

Yes with the newly discovered "Shared Reminders" function I was just thinking how handy it would be to replace our refrigerator whiteboard with an iPad that syncs the grocery list to our iPhones via Reminders. Seemed like a silly fleeting thought...really?? Hanging an iPad on the fridge?

But then how long will it be before an appliance company actually does this...builds in a touchscreen that either is an iPad or has a slimmed down compatible OS that syncs via WiFi or Bluetooth to your local devices to provide this kind of functionality? The ad at the bottom of this page just took me to a ridiculously oversized wristwatch (the "I'm" - sorry, waiting for the Pebble) that does this, why not little screens on everything from refrigerators to coffee tables to bathroom mirrors?

The lack of 3G in the original iPhone was probably a good engineering decision, since the available 3G chips were too power hungry

Antenna problems with iPhone 4 was a big fiasco. I have that phone, so I'm reminded on a daily basis. The reception drops just after I pick up the phone to answer a call. Very annoying.

The interesting question is if Apple knew how bad it was before the launch. I think Steve would have stopped the launch.

The others you mentioned are new to me. I don't think they count as major problems.

Daniel

Here's a few others then:

Mac OS X 10.0
- much slower than Mac OS 9
- stability issues
- no DVD playback support
- no CD burning support

Original iPod
- no Windows support

Original iPhone
- no 3rd party app support
- no copy and paste

I don't think these were problems per se, but rather evidence that Steve-era Apple wasn't afraid to release products that needed a few versions to mature. Furthermore, these debates are ignoring what Apple did before Steve returned. Apple did many things that were considered great. Some examples:

- Mac OS
- Newton
- OpenDoc
- Purchase NeXT

So, what you don't know doesn't count? Tell that to the people with a cracked macbook. Look up the threads on this board if you can find your way out of the iPhone and iPad forums.

Apple has always had problems in quality like every manufacturer has and they are not any bigger now than they were 5 years ago. Just the reporting is more focussed than it was because Apple's global market share is increasing.

My iPhone 5 screen went a bit funny the other day but is now fine and the screen isn't as responsive as my last iPhone.

Computers, had the pre unibody MB Pro, power board failed - known issues, went to the Uni body on release, first one had finger prints behind the glass as did the second replacement, third was alright but some fluff got behind the screen and the DVD was kinda playing up. Changed a Core i7 model in 2010 and the front feet have fallen off and the placement of the light sensor is wrong and doesn't work half as well as before.

So yeah, not ONE of my Macs has been faultless, which I think is why if I ever get another it'll be a iMac as it's cheaper and much better value, just as long as it doesn't have a yellow screen..

In fact, my most reliable Apple device has been my fat boy iPod Nano that lives in the car!

Oh and my Time Capusle power board failed too, replaced for free by Apple as again it's a known problem. Also my mums plastic Macbook had a new keyboard due to cracking.

So yeah, the only faultless devices are my iPod, my mums iPod and her iPad.

What? They already did.

I was referring to the event - they won't apologize for it at the event.

Brazil is probably even MORE Western than the US (i.e., overwhelmingly Christian and formed on the basis of European values/immigration), so I don't know what you're talking about.

As I said in my initial post, I didn't know much about Brazil and religion. Thanks for clearing it up.

Exactly. If the iPad Mini is launched, it's gonna be further proof that Apple has become a me-too company instead of leading the pack.

MARK MY WORDS AGAIN: if the iPad Mini is just a "smaller" iPad (instead of a dedicated, best-of-class ereader) it's gonna be a major flop for Apple.

Tim Cook, you have time to revert this stupid decision; let it just be a rumor and nothing more.

Oh give it a rest. We know it by now. You don't like the hypothetical mini.

How is this event gonna be a "Little More to Show" ?

Rumored reveals:
1) iPad mini (with E-books update/revamp)
2) 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro
3) Updated Mac mini models
4) Updated iMacs

Seems like quite a Lot to show really....

The highlight will be the iPad mini. Which is "little" and it's an addition to the iPad line. And then you have the 13" Retina Pro which is "little" and an addition to the Retina MacBook Pro line.

My take on how the pricing is going to go:

Firstly, cut off selling the iPad 2 for $399. So instead of the current iPad and older iPad, it's going to be the iPad and iPad mini for sale from now on. The iPad will always be better, specs-wise, than iPad mini.

Start iPad mini at $399 for 16gbs, $499 for 32gbs, and $599 for 64gbs. LTE iPad mini's will be available too. I'm not sure about the colors but I'm going to garner that they'll be in black/slate and white/silver, just to match with the just released iPhone 5. Or they might go with the colorful route they took with the iPods, but I think the former is more likely.

Of course this is purely conjecture. Just my two cents :)
They have to go cheaper if they want to compete directly with the Kindle Fires and Nexus 7s and Nooks of the world

Apple is taking its 70% of the market 10" tablet and shrinking it to another form factor and going after the 7" market as well. You might not be interested in a 7" tablet, but that doesnt mean Apple won't sell millions of them by Christmas.

MARK MY WORDS FOR THE FIRST TIME. Apple will sell millions of them if they really come in at the $250 price or so thats currently rumored. But don't believe me, make a wager with me instead and help build a free hot tub next to the free pool I got from the last group of guys I marked their words. Maybe you are one of those people, do you have a friend, relative or associate with the NCAA?

Has anyone hacked into xcode to see apps running at the rumoured iPad mini screen size/resolution?

People did this with the iPhone 5 - i'm surprised no one has now.

The iPad mini's resolution will be the same as the iPad 2's, just shrunk down. So no resolution should be out of the ordinary

I dunno where the heck are the ROUNDUPS that MacRumors started! Clicking on the roundup link simply takes one to the iPhone website.

I've been on the fence about the iPad mini. Thought I'd save some cash and give the inexpensive Kindle Paperwhite a go. I have a Kindle 3G/keyboard, and NEVER USE IT because I just can't see the d*** thing. It's dark gray text on not-so-dark background.

The Paperwhite gets announced, more contrast, higher resolution, lit screen, cheap $119. I placed my order on the 1st, been listed as "not shipped yet" since.

Saw the Apple invite, Mini iPad a reality? Hmmm. Read reviews on Amazon for the paperwhite. LOTS of unhappy people. All complaints revolve around the screen. Google. Images. CRAP!

What Amazon Promised vs. What Amazon Delivered pics attached.

Cancelled my order!!!! Bring on the Mini iPad!!!

Why were you considering the Paperwhite in the first place? The two devices are very different. It's like saying the microwave got bad reviews so you're going to buy a toaster oven instead of another microwave. Reading on the iPad Mini (presumably, since it hasn't been announced yet) won't be nearly as comfortable as on an eReader.

I would wait a week or two and then you can buy a 32GB Nexus 7 for half the cost of an 8GB iPad Mini :D But they are heavily rumoured to be ditching the 16GB model for a 32GB one at the same price before the end of the month.

Yeah I'll believe that when I see it. Don't fool yourself, IF the device comes with a retina or a display with a highish resolution just how many apps are you going to fit on 8GB? And Apple is ALL about the apps.

But if you think it'll cost $250 then that's very funny, so a device that will be several times bigger then the new iPod Touch will cost less just because it has less storage? You don't know Apple... It'll be $300 to $400 starting price.

The low-end iPad is $400. There's no way that Apple will price the iPad Mini comparably with the iPad. That's absurd.

And 8GB is plenty. I have hundreds of apps on my iPhone 4S, I'm a terrible app hoarder, and they still fill probably only about 5GB. So 8GB is plenty of space for apps.

Hi,

I still don't believe in the iPad mini. Instead of quoting rumour sites and looking at third-party case photos, let's reason about the why Apple would do this.

To me, several factors speaks against an iPad mini:

- The current iPad already dominates the table market (some 70%). Cook commented on this in the latest earnings call.

- Fragmentation of the iOS platform. Developers would be required to develop for a third screen size.

- Size is a tweener (Steve's famous words). The (3.5") iPhone is perfect as a one-hand, pocket device. The iPad is perfect as a two-hand device for surfing the web and watching films/TV. An iPad mini would not fit a pocket, but would still be to small for the web and films/TV.

On the other hand, I see several signs that Steve's Apple is fading away. The brilliant principle of just making the best possible device for the customer. If the launch an iPad mini, I feel that looking at the competitors too much. They would become like every other computer maker, spewing out a lot of product and waiting to see what sticks.

Some other example of Apple's demise:

- The Maps fiasco. Now we know that they got loud feedback from developers, but decided to go ahead anyway.

- ML battery life problem. The latest update has not solved it for me (MBP mid 2009) and a lot of other people. Basically, my battery life is 50% of what it was in Lion.

- iPhone 5 form factor. I think it's not a natural screen ratio, and I can't comfortably operate with my thumb (even though I'm 6'2 and has large hands). Perhaps Apple felt the lack of new features, and therefore decided to go with a 4" screen?

Anyway, would be interested to hear your reasons why Apple would launch an iPad mini.

Daniel

PS. I have been an Apple fan since to original iPhone came out. Have also made some good money on Apple stocks and options since them.

I think it's likely. We've seen the rumors and lots of components leaks. It's also something that Apple must do. The 7" tablets are a whole lot cheaper than Apple's 10" iPad, at ~$200 instead of ~$500. The Nexus 7 looks like a pretty darn good device. And at $200, this competition is a serious threat to Apple's tablet market dominance.

Also, smaller iPads is something that Apple can easily do. They can adopt the old iPad resolution, or create a new one. They had no problem with creating a new device resolution for the iPhone 5.

I see the device being something like the iPod lines, multi-colored product line-up that's a designers' playground for the tablet line.

Just for the heck of it, I predict that the iPad minis will come in the same variety of colors as the iPod Touches and Nanos. Though the pastels are ugly if you ask me. They should have stuck with last year's colors.

Also, Apple has always screwed up here and there. Just because it has screwed up a few times recently is not news and not evidence of their upcoming demise, or return to the dark Sculley era.

Hm ... so ... the iPad was a large iPod touch ... and the iPad mini will be what? An iPod touch?

Seriously, though ... it will be interesting to see how that plays out. Personally, I'm starting to consider Windows 8. At least Microsoft doesn't come up with stupid Skeumorphisms that reduce usability all the time.

The only problem I have is that I'm totally locked in to the Apple ecosystem ATM (at least when it comes to mobile stuff - but I haven't tried running Mac OS on a virtual machine on a PC, yet ... running Windows on a virtual machine on the Mac works perfectly fine). The funny thing is that I can't even run Mountain Lion natively on my Mac Pro (it's a 2007 model). Windows 8, on the other hand, runs just fine - even in Bootcamp-mode.

The point I'm making: If I want choice, I go Windows / Android / Linux. I choose Apple because I want simplicity instead ... and having yet another form factor doesn't help with that. So "iPod touch just a little bit larger" or iPad mini or whatever they call it ... doesn't give me goose bumps. Well, it does - but not in a good way ;-)

Looking forward to next weeks event but with some reserve as we still don't have access here in Korea to the products announced at the last event! :(

Very interested in the iPad Mini, wish it would come in colours like the iTouch but I guess from the leaks so far isn't gonna happen.

My daughter and I are going to play Apple key phrase bingo, we are looking through the past two media events and selecting phrases we are pretty sure will pop up this time. "It's amazing", is high on the list.:)
