The event will be held at the California Theatre in San Jose, California and is scheduled to begin at 10:00 AM Pacific / 1:00 PM Eastern.

Ooh we haven't had an Apple event there at the California since Steve introduced the 1st iPod with video in 2005. This event is probably going to be a biggy!!

One more thing: Happy birthday to the (new) iPod Classic.

Quite fits with:

Pretty pretty exciting. I just hope they really intro an iPad Mini, been waiting since the first iPad came out (which is just too big for my needs - went Nook Color instead and MISS iOS) and really really hope that it will be shipped next day.

eReader or literally a Mini iPad

.....if it's just launched as a smaller iPad (and not as a pure ebook reader.....).

Yeh I would be disappointed if it wasn't designed with an eReader interface and thus a somewhat different OS. If it is just a case of iOS 6 on a smaller device then it doesnt make it anything special, it doesnt make it stand out from the other devices. If Apple are trying to compete with eReaders then they should come up with a really cool interface designed specifically for ebooks, magazines, PDF's etc etc. I'm not saying that they omit having app support but perhaps not have the app interface as the main screen. Give the consumer something new to look at, a new interface with loads of appeal. Something that will make people who already own an iPad 'want' to go out and get one.

But anyway as for the announcement date and release date etc I think Apple are just trying to compete with the MS Surface launch. The RT version of the Surface tablet is basically rubbish so Apple really shouldnt be worrying too much (if they are). They should wait until March to release the Mini alongside the 4th gen iPad which I'm still hoping will have the much coveted IGZO display panel. :D

Looking forward to seeing the WWDC podcast after the event. Should be interesting. No doubt we'll hear the usual rhetoric "isnt it just gorgeous", "isn't it the most beautiful idevice you've ever seen", "don't you just want to sandwich it between 2 halves of an Oreo cookie and eat it"..... *yawn*

I hope the ipad mini is a flop.....makes it a hell of a lot easier for me to get one for the fiancee for her christmas!! :p:D

If you're interested in a mini, you better hope it's a success if you want them to continue producing, supporting and upgrading them in the future.

Steve Jobs a couple years back:

"Let's talk about the avalanche of tablets. First, there are only a few credible competitors. And they all have seven-inch screen. This size isn't sufficient to create great tablet apps. And this size is useless unless you include sandpaper so users can sand their fingers down to a quarter of their size. We've done extensive testing and 10 inches is the minimum tablet size.

Given that tablet users will have a smartphone in their pocket, there's no point in giving up screen size. Seven inch tablets are tweeners -- too big to be a phone, and too small to compete with the iPad."

Aw yeah, it's on and crackin' bitches :D:D:D:D

Just gimmie USB 3 & Ivy Bridge Apple, that's all I need...
:apple:

Not sure if you are saying Steve Jobs is always right or Steve Jobs is sometimes wrong.

That is pretty funny that a couple of years ago a iPad Mini would have not been considered an option but now we are getting one. Obviously, some will argue whether a 7in tablet is good compared to the standard sized one but there is two separate markets now. With the addition of this tablet the two markets will further differentiate themselves for two separate types of consumers. I wonder what other things Steve Jobs said will never happen but will happen in the years to come.

I think it's quite a statement that it will be held at a 1122 seat theatre instead of Apple's own 200-seat Town Hall. I think Apple is hoping to make a big splash next week. I think this is the biggest venue Apple has used for a product introduction (excluding those at WWDC) since the days when they used to do keynotes at the MacWorld Expo.

That was then, this is now. ATM, the iPad's biggest competitors by far are several 7" tablets. These threaten Apple's dominance in the tablet market, and have to be addressed in order for Apple to maintain that dominance.

I think that's a pretty good reason for Apple to change its mind about 7" tablets (besides which, a nearly 8" tablet is significantly larger that a 7").

armed with the knowledge that it is very unlikely that Apple will create a new resolution scale for developers to tailor their apps to, and after looking at the leaked product numbers for the iPad mini, i wonder if there will be a broad range of options in choosing an iPad mini:

-a bottom-end model (e.g. 8/16gb, wifi only, 1024x768 screen res) - $299
up to
-a very high end model (e.g. 32gb, LTE+wifi, 2048x1536 screen res) - $799

just not sure if a display with that kind of PPI can be manufactured very easily... having said that, it's not that much smaller than the current iPad.

a nearly 8" tablet is significantly larger that a 7").
Also - perhaps only today technology is there to produce higher resolution screens in that size. When Jobs made his announcement (and even more so the one or two years before when the tests have acutally been executed), going to 7" would probably have meant to go (significantly) lower than 1024x768.

Which they may have deemed unacceptable for a.) that device size (you can get away with it on a phone way easier) and b.) the introduction of a new product intended to conquer the market others have been gloriously failed to create for several years.

Such a new product must have some "WOW" factor to it, and with 1024x768 in a 9.7" size they saw a better chance to actually reach that goal (and rightly so, looking at it retrospectively).

Any cool theories what the invitation is about .. like hidden messages (except the more than obvious "little" in there)?
