Sure - but the N7 screen is noticably worse than the iPad 3 screen. Apple also prides itself on the display quality - why would they NOT be the best out there as they have been with each product they make?

1280x960 is also a pretty arbitrary resolution in that it doesn't match cleanly with the iPad's other resolutions. Either they figure out how to find a middle ground between the iPad 2 and 3 or they mail it in and got with the crappy 1024x768....which will lose my purchase.

Not that it's that important to me - lol I just want one as a toy. I do sometimes wish my iPad 3 was smaller but that screen won't let me use any other tablet.

----------

Surface RT won't hurt iPad sales in the slightest....Android tablets should be worried though. Their market share will get eaten up.

Apple with about 65-70%
Android with about 15-20%
MS with 10-15%

You should note one thing... Highest screen resolution =! best display. Is there one thing the iPhone 5 display has proven to the market it has to be the fact that even though it doesn't have the largest screen, it doesn't have the highest PPI any more, it doesn't feature any kind of fancy AMOLED panel, yet it's by far the best and most impressive display panel og any mobile device to date from a professional point of view due to it's excellent colour gamut and near perfect colour calibration right out of the box.

I for one hope Apple focus more towards providing high colour gamut display with fantastic colour calibration and good PPI instead of going all overboard on the PPI and forgetting about all the other aspects making a display good.

To me the invite pic screams out retina. With all those colours used.
iPad mini? 13 rMBP? more edu content? retina iMacs? All still speculation at this point. But they would be a good educated guess.

I'm cool with everyone guessing. Someone is bound to be right. But people claiming they know before hand? Either they are lying or breaking an NDA.

Even the img name for the invite MacRumors used is ipad_mini_invite.jpg

Well, and from my understanding, most Chinese workers do not celebrate the November and December holidays we celebrate in the US. Brazil might be a different story - I'm not terribly familiar with the importance of religion in Brazilian life.

Brazil is probably even MORE Western than the US (i.e., overwhelmingly Christian and formed on the basis of European values/immigration), so I don't know what you're talking about.

----------

Brazil is mostly Catholic, due to it originally being a colony of Portugal. Portuguese in the language they speak. Their flavor of Catholicism is influenced by many native factors. They have freedom of religion just like we do and the government stays out of the way. They also have a ton of other religions like we do. Bahai, Mormons, etc. Sorry to go on so long, but to answer your question...
Yes, they do celebrate Xmas. They most likely get Xmas eve and Xmas day off from the factory grind.

One thing I can assure you: Brazilians get a LOT more holidays than any US over-exploited employee out there. Christmas breaks are pretty much a rule in any private company dealing in that country, considering that it's not only a Catholic but also increasingly Evangelical (i.e., protestant) nation.

US workers barely get any vacation, so I don't even know why the usual references to China keep being floated on this forum. YOU US workers need more time off, not the Chinese.

I like how the colourful area of the invite represents the open spread of a book, against the top of the apple logo, which would be appropriate for the purpose of the iPad mini. Whether its intentional or not, it looks pretty cool!

I'm betting 10 million won't be nearly enough. Even I'm thinking about buying it......depends on price. This could be the holy grail of little electronics devices - the "chicken in every pot and a Ford in every garage" of irritating portable devices . The epitome of....well you get the idea ;)

Rich

Apple surprise everyone, Image shows a zoomed in Apple logo because they are releasing not an iPad mini, but a 27" iPad to replace the iMac line, use of the word little is apples attempt to "double down" on security :D

I am tempted to get a nexus 7

I would wait a week or two and then you can buy a 32GB Nexus 7 for half the cost of an 8GB iPad Mini :D But they are heavily rumoured to be ditching the 16GB model for a 32GB one at the same price before the end of the month.

----------

Like I said before, 8GB Wifi only $249.99.

Yeah I'll believe that when I see it. Don't fool yourself, IF the device comes with a retina or a display with a highish resolution just how many apps are you going to fit on 8GB? And Apple is ALL about the apps.

But if you think it'll cost $250 then that's very funny, so a device that will be several times bigger then the new iPod Touch will cost less just because it has less storage? You don't know Apple... It'll be $300 to $400 starting price.

$300-400 for 8GB? I don't think Apple is that stupid. I think they just might surprise us on price.

Not sure if you are saying Steve Jobs is always right or Steve Jobs is sometimes wrong.

Apple always does this. Remember when they were dissing all-in-one computers and then came out with the iMac a few years later? They diss the market at the time, but watch it develop until they have learned how to make a product work.

I just got my first iPod Touch. It is fun to use, but took me several days to get used to how small the screen was and how limiting the form factor is, compared to the iPad. On the iPad I can read a full page document. I cannot do that on the Touch, and on the Android Tablet I bought my sister she can just about do that, but really only in landscape mode.

I would not recommend anything under a 32GB device. Once you start downloading items in it, it fills up quickly. A full HD movie (avengers for example) is about 4GB. My apps alone take up 11GB with all the files I have inside each one (dropbox, goodreader, podcasts, music, Zinio, and so on).

Why?

Hi,

I still don't believe in the iPad mini. Instead of quoting rumour sites and looking at third-party case photos, let's reason about the why Apple would do this.

To me, several factors speaks against an iPad mini:

- The current iPad already dominates the table market (some 70%). Cook commented on this in the latest earnings call.

- Fragmentation of the iOS platform. Developers would be required to develop for a third screen size.

- Size is a tweener (Steve's famous words). The (3.5") iPhone is perfect as a one-hand, pocket device. The iPad is perfect as a two-hand device for surfing the web and watching films/TV. An iPad mini would not fit a pocket, but would still be to small for the web and films/TV.

On the other hand, I see several signs that Steve's Apple is fading away. The brilliant principle of just making the best possible device for the customer. If the launch an iPad mini, I feel that looking at the competitors too much. They would become like every other computer maker, spewing out a lot of product and waiting to see what sticks.

Some other example of Apple's demise:

- The Maps fiasco. Now we know that they got loud feedback from developers, but decided to go ahead anyway.

- ML battery life problem. The latest update has not solved it for me (MBP mid 2009) and a lot of other people. Basically, my battery life is 50% of what it was in Lion.

- iPhone 5 form factor. I think it's not a natural screen ratio, and I can't comfortably operate with my thumb (even though I'm 6'2 and has large hands). Perhaps Apple felt the lack of new features, and therefore decided to go with a 4" screen?

Anyway, would be interested to hear your reasons why Apple would launch an iPad mini.

Daniel

PS. I have been an Apple fan since to original iPhone came out. Have also made some good money on Apple stocks and options since them.

Just so I'm clear, this is the media event for the iPad mini that

"isn't going to happen",

"is never going to happen", and

"Apple has no interest in making a 7" iPad because the regular iPad is doing so well"

???????????

:p

Exactly. If the iPad Mini is launched, it's gonna be further proof that Apple has become a me-too company instead of leading the pack.

MARK MY WORDS AGAIN: if the iPad Mini is just a "smaller" iPad (instead of a dedicated, best-of-class ereader) it's gonna be a major flop for Apple.

Tim Cook, you have time to revert this stupid decision; let it just be a rumor and nothing more.

- Fragmentation of the iOS platform. Developers would be required to develop for a third screen size.

Not even, it would be a sixth screen size, 3GS, 4/4S, 5, iPad, New iPad and now this new potential iPad mini

universal app (facebook, twitter, games) devs are probably not going to be happy there

You and many others here seem to have a selective memory. There have also been many "problems" during Steve's tenure:

  • Orginal iPhone without 3G
  • cracked iPhone 3G backs
  • Yellow iPad screens
  • warped and cracked macbook shells
  • Antenna problems in the iPhone 4
The "new" problems are of exactly the same nature. There are not more problems than there were before. It's just selective perception.

Oh Apple aren't stupid, they are in fact extremely clever. I'm afraid it's us consumers who are utterly stupid because we will pay what ever Apple chargers no questions asked. A fact the has led to its utterly obscene profits and cash reserves. I mean in the UK they charge one hundred pounds, (about 160 dollars), just for the increase from a 32gb iPhone 5 to a 64gb iPhone 5 just because they can and people will buy it as a status symbol or what ever.
I do not believe Apple would be dumb enough to launch an 8gb iPad as its a waste of time. They will start from 16gb and cost from between $300 to $400 and hail the innovation and apparent invention and millions will queue up to buy it.
The more sensible will realise the rip off it actually is.

The lack of 3G in the original iPhone was probably a good engineering decision, since the available 3G chips were too power hungry

Antenna problems with iPhone 4 was a big fiasco. I have that phone, so I'm reminded on a daily basis. The reception drops just after I pick up the phone to answer a call. Very annoying.

The interesting question is if Apple knew how bad it was before the launch. I think Steve would have stopped the launch.

The others you mentioned are new to me. I don't think they count as major problems.

Posting a picture of Baghdad Bob proves my point.

You have no arguments.
