J/B Issue???

Anybody know for sure if the new update screws up your J/B??? Just got mine working well and dont want to mess it up:)

They are out of date!

If DVDs are so out of date, then what are these silver orbs that Redbox spits out? If you're going to call it an Apple TV then at least cater to the largest media format running at that point in time.

dvd's will be a thing of the past hello haven't u noticed the DVD rental companies closing their doors left and right . Red Box is July picking up the residual dvd users it won't be long before they are gone if they don't add some sort of digital rental soon.

ps don't buy an apple tv if u want a DVD player. it never promised it had one Geesh

RedBox also rents Blu-rays as well. I can't remember the last time I bought a DVD or even watched one. We are living in a High Definition world now. I own a HDTV to watch HD Content. My only complaint I have on my AppleTV is that it's only 720p. It does seem we are moving to a Digital Format more so than Disc Media. But I still love my Blu-rays for purchasing movies.

So many people own large HDTVs and still only watch SD content. It's like buying a Sports car to only drive under the speed limit all the time. Granted HDTVs are the only kind you can buy anymore.

I heard from someone else on MacRumors that you have the give the ATV a static IP address and not use DHCP, because the "lease" expires every 24 hours or w/e.

I don't know if it works or not, since I don't have an ATV just yet, but it sounds about right .

Interesting thought. I will test that if this update didnt fix it. Or maybe set my DHCP leases longer in my router...hmmm

The hot dogs and drinks are your choice.

And the price is the same here in NYC.

I guarantee - if movie theaters didn't exist - you'd be paying quite a bit to stream the same movie to your smaller and inferior screen. :)

And I'm not sure if you are referring to adverts as actual adverts - or movie trailers. Personally - I love seeing trailers.
you seem to be caught up in the whole idea of "going to the movies". most people just want to see the content. They don't want to go sit in a packed theater with people talking and texting and have to sit for 30 minutes to watch previews. they just want to see the actual movie. $10/ticket to see a movie on a friday nite? that's ridiculous. You have to pay me to send me to a movie theater nowadays.

Absolutely right! People have a hard time distinguishing wants from needs as well as privileges from rights. Outside of basic food, shelter, clothing, and medication, everything else is optional.

While sometimes you may want something really bad, to the point it feels like its a need, ultimately your life will go on if you don't have it.

However, I do believe that at some point in the near future we will have first run movies at home, once the economics of the situation get figured out.

I would be gladly willing to pay $15 to "rent" a new movie for 24 hours. It would save me at least $5-10 off of going with my wife to the movies. We could also get our own Dollar Store popcorn and save even more. And if you split it with a few friends, the savings get even bigger.

Not to mention, if we could get Subtitles and the ability to pause the movie to go the bathroom or rewind a part a few seconds to see some detail, we would be happier with the experience too.

And after seeing a few movies at the theater in the last few weeks, I think I find my 60" Plasma screen more impressive in picture quality, brightness, and detail than the projectors used at the movies (probably because 1080p looks a lot sharper on a 60 inch screen than a on 100 foot screen).

I can see how in the past when people's living room TVs were no more than 26" or 32" and most people's audio systems were basically the built in TV speakers, going out to see a movie was an "experience." But today the only reason to see movies at the theater is if you can't wait the few months it takes for them to get to Blu-ray.

Edit: Also, 3-D movies are still a better experience at the movies, but that will change in the next couple of years as 3-D TVs become mainstream.

yeah i think we will eventually see this. I can't wait until it happens either. I'd gladly pay $20/movie to not have to step in a theater. $10/ticket to have people next to you talking/texting/making out is ridiculous. I hate "going to the movies" i think it's an awful experience.

I never understand why people are so fascinated with it.

Great update!

-Black screen fixed during movie playback of some of my encodes. I thought it was my encodes, but videos would play fine in iTunes but not on the ATV2.

-Movie descriptions are back in this latest firmware. To view a movie description, during playback press "Up" on the Remote twice.

I'm building up quite a collection, mostly HD now. I've found a really great process to get a properly formatted ATV movie with h.264 video, 2-channel AAC, and pass-thru 5.1 AC3 Dolby Digital.

Check it out: http://cl.ly/3i220R3k1x3X0e270Y0m

Anyone else out there using the ATV2 as their primary media player?

Yes, I noticed last night that a RIP of mine that didnt show video is now working. Hurray!

Yes, ATV is my ONLY media player, one upstairs, one down.

I like the new Apple TV. It's great!
.
[*]Reduce the brightness of that white LED or provide a setting to do so. It is annoyingly bright. Consider a different color, such as red blue or green.

[*]Provide an OFF switch. As it is, the ATV wakes up from "sleep" mode from time to time. Why is it doing this? Sometimes I think the ATV is spying on me. I turned OFF the setting allowing the ATV to send messages to Apple. After seeing the iPhone location bruhaha, I wonder if that OFF setting actually works - or is it a "bug" like when you turn off location services on the iPhone but it collected info anyway.

[/LIST]

Put tape over it

It's sensing other IR remotes that your using, then goes back to sleep.

Well I thought about doing just that, but what a shoddy solution that is. Apple should just tone down the brightness.

And NO, the ATV is not sensing other IR remotes. No one is touching any remotes when the ATV suddenly cranks up unbidden. That bright white led let's me know that it woke up, which it does every couple of hours all by itself.

This is a known issue generating ZERO response from Apple that I can find.

Is Apple TV watching you?

Apple TV 3 please... though it should be after the iPhone 5 which will integrate with it so well that it is insane.

XBMC that baby!

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

What's a DVD?

Come on! JAilbreak that baby and install XBMC Media Centre! With Video add-ons like Icefilms, CatchupTV and BBC iPlayer, who needs DVDs...:D

DVDs are junk today

DVD??

I've been ripping all my DVDs to put on hard drives. No more swapping discs for me!

I regret buying a couple of high end DVD drives. I simply do not need DVD disks anymore. I rip any into digital files and instead of backing up to DVD I just use cheap multi tB drives dropped into an external dock and then stored on a bookshelf. These drives should last forever since they are not running all the time when not needed.

DVD and CD are just old fashioned junk IMHO, like that case of old 3.5 HD floppy disks I threw away last year. I don't even have a FD drive any more, nor do I have the time to fool with them if I did.

CD and DVD are the same, who has time to waste fooling with physical disks? If I want a movie it is far faster to drop hundreds of them into a dock and use the computer or XBMC to pick a title and stream it.

I can confirm it doesnt seem to fix the homesharing issue. I did check my airport extreme and my DHCP lease was set to 12 hours. Increasing that, see what happens. Next step is to go to wired network.

I bought the ATV2 less than a month ago and everything but one thing works fine. I recorded a video on my iPhone 3GS, then uploaded it to MobileMe. The video plays just fine when viewed from a Mac or PC via the web browser. But when I log into MM from the ATV2 it shows my account, my album and the 3 videos from my iPhone show up. When I go to play one of the videos I get the message "An error occurred loading this content. Try again later."

It was like this before yesterday's update and continues after the update.

My ATV2 is connected to my AEBS via CAT5e and from the AEBS to my cable modem. All other content plays fine (Netflix, YouTube etc...).

Does anyone else have this problem or know what the issue may be?

For closure purposes and in case anyone else experiences this problem, I figured it out. When entering the MobileMe account name into the ATV2, only put in the name and not the full email address.
