DVDs are at most 850 x 480 (hint: less than Apple TV, iPad, iPhone 4, etc.)

The reason we need blu-ray in macs and/or apple tv... I don't get why the hatred for blu-ray (although I like hd purchase and rentals for lots of things, but things I really like I collect on blu-ray.) Also I have a collection that I can't play (easily) on my macs, I wonder what Jobs uses for his home theatre, I'm sure he uses blu-ray movies...

So you have a TV that wil play 480i and 1080i but not 720P?
My in laws have a new Samsung 3D (less than a month old) tv and it plays fine on it, and my parents have an old Sony (probably 1st generation LCD) and it plays fine on it, that sucker is so old it only has 1 HDMI on it.

Let's not forget that resolution is only part of the quality issue. Cable and streaming services like Apple TV/Netflix/Hulu are not true HD. Oh yes - they can be up to 1080P - but the compression is FAR greater than that on blu-ray.

The math speaks for itself - blu-rays are upwards of 50 gig. The movies being streamed are likely around 2.5 gig. Do you need to see a rom/com on Blu-Ray - perhaps not. But if I'm watching something with stunning landscapes, sci-fi, etc - it's noticeable and I always prefer to pop in the blu-ray.

BTW - I have a 55" 3D set from Samsung myself. Love it.

I agree with you but fpnc said their TV doesn't support 720p.. just trying to see what HD TV doesn't support 720p.
My in-laws have the 55" 3D tv also, one day they go on vacation and they will end up with a 46" Samsung somehow ;)

FF Live TV?

If Apple has figured out how to FF Live TV I definitely want in on that technology... I want to FF through the rest of the season of American Idol and Dancing with the Stars...

I don't get why the hatred for blu-ray...

My understanding is that the Blu-Ray license would require that Apple put someone else's watchdog/DRM code in the OS X kernel. If that is indeed the case, I understand the reluctance.

For me, I am pretty much done with physical consumer media. Someone gave me a Blu-Ray player as a present - I gave it away to someone else who wanted one (as a Netflix player, it turns out). I still buy the occasional DVD, mostly because just about every computer I own can play it (or rip it, as required).

People forget that its a useless little black box if you live outside the states.

( I have you a +1 ;))

Speak for yourself!

I live in the UK (just under 10 miles from you actually, in Hemel Hempstead) and my family watches NETFLIX on :apple:TV2 every day. It has so now become the centre of our entertainment hub, that my wife is asking me to cancel our Sky Movies subscription (She's become hooked on 24, and my daughter is hooked on yet to be screened in the UK episodes of Suite Life and some other Disney productions;and in HD too!)
So, to call the :apple:TV2 useless outside of the US is going a bit too far.

Where there's a will, there's a way...Think Different! ;)

I like the new Apple TV. It's great!

I mostly use it to watch movie previews and to stream audio from my iPod using AirPlay.

I do have some suggestions on how ATV could be improved:
  1. Improve AirPlay so that I can stream images in addition to video, such as displays from games.
  2. Reduce the brightness of that white LED or provide a setting to do so. It is annoyingly bright. Consider a different color, such as red blue or green.
  3. Provide an OFF switch. As it is, the ATV wakes up from "sleep" mode from time to time. Why is it doing this? Sometimes I think the ATV is spying on me. I turned OFF the setting allowing the ATV to send messages to Apple. After seeing the iPhone location bruhaha, I wonder if that OFF setting actually works - or is it a "bug" like when you turn off location services on the iPhone but it collected info anyway.
  4. It would be very, very nice if Apple combined the ATV features with a blu-ray player. One box instead of two would be great.

I don't give a **** how many people down-rank this comment, that **** was funny!

I haven't watched anything off of a DVD in months... but I've been streaming videos off my itunes and netflix in my room all day... literally.

So it does better than any DVD players I own... it can contend maybe with a BD player with Internet access and tons of video apps... otherwise... it wasn't funny unless you're so behind on tech you can't grasp the future yet.

I think my snarky comment has more negative votes than say, a post espousing the Taliban's treatment of women. Grow up folks. I buy Apple, you buy Apple...this childish fanboism is moronic.

Would you like a more contemplative response to all your bitching?

The ATV is a media consumption device, and completely renders one's DVD/BluRay collection useless. Sorry, Im not going to spend the 65 years left I have on this earth, ripping my collection and converting with HB. Furthermore, Apple's prices for rental's and movie purchases are just too expensive for me.
Are they evil as a result? A bad company? Are ATV owners/enthusiasts stupid because they dont share my perceptions on how the ATV doesnt fit MY NEEDS? No, and my comments never support any of those misconceptions.

You do know your DVD's corrode and eventually they'll be unreadable right? I'm sure Hard Drives will fail eventually too. But at least it's quicker and easier to move.

Wow this update fixed all kinds of issues. It fixed the sound not playing in a few of my rips, it fixed my Avatar glitch issue (I thought it was just my rip) and the fastforward/rewind is flawless now. Great job Apple! :)

uh oh. spent four hours trying to jailbreak my new apple TV on Sunday, and I forgot to check to turn off any auto update - will it automatically update to this software, or notify me first?

I had to check mine. Usually it will notify you I don't believe the Apple TV autoupdates.

Hehe...-26 rating for that one. I think you pissed off a few of the ATV kids :p

I live outside of the states, and I have 2 of those "useless little boxes", and everyone that's seen mine has purchased one of their own. If you're not using iTunes as your media hub, then maybe it's not for you. If you are, it's a great little device.

I'm just waiting for an update or a hack that allows the USB port on it to be utilized. I'd love to connect an external drive rather than always needing to stream through iTunes...

It's the wrong gender, unfortunately. The AppleTV will only ever be a device, not a host.

The ATV is £101 GBP (converts to $165 USD) here. And yes, I would pay that for an Apple TV with a built in DVD (or heck, even BR) player...that or an AppleTV with an ability to add additional storage, and be actually usable. At the moment it is a pointless product in the UK.

Again, you clearly are looking at this from a US perspective. In the UK the total functionality of the ATV maxes out at buying content from itunes, streaming from your iDevice/Mac and watching youtube.

It's effectively a $99/£101 setup fee to a blockbuster subscription.

EDIT: and to top all that off, PAL content (I.E ANY UK content) is buggy as hell and stutters, even after this update.

Have absolutely no problems with PAL content. How are you getting yours into the AppleTV?

How are you doing Netflix? Would LOVE to be able to set up a Netflix account

...It would be nice to get rid of MLB.tv as well (though that maybe a UK wish only).

I would punch you for saying that if you were standing in front of me :D

Seriously, MLB.tv is the reason I pulled the Roku out of my rack and gave it away a couple of months ago. Been waiting for that feature for a while.

For the poster who complained of its quality, I have a little insight. I have two ATVs. One is in my bedroom, connected with a network cable to my Time Capsule. I rarely, if ever have any issues with it. Picture quality is almost always HD, with only the very, very seldom pixelation, which I attribute to MLB's servers, since I suffered through last season with my Roku, my laptop and my iOS devices.

The ATV connected to my living room TV is wireless, and is in a room just a wall away from the router (not in my living room, as I have my components in a HT "closet" and use RF remote to access them from the living room). I would experience drops, stalls, pixelation, wild changes in picture quality. Especially on Friday night games (?). I even swapped the two units out to make sure it wasn't a hardware issue. No joy.

I recently moved the "living room" ATV as close to the router as possible, so it's about 2-3 feet away from the router, just on the other side of the wall. Picture quality and consistency have gotten much better. Still not quite as reliable as the one that's connected via hardwire, but still much better.

Those are obsolete formats, you can't currently say the same thing about DVD (or Blu-ray).

A recent reports says 78% of all home video spending goes towards DVD and Blu-ray, so sales of physical media may be falling but there's still a long way to go before they are made obsolete by downloaded content.

Valid point. But to assert that a device that was INVENTED for streaming media is useless without what is most certainly a waning technology is absurd.

And I still maintain that DVD technology is being artificially propped up by media companies' greed, and unwillingness to let the streaming flow freely. Draconian rental schemes (24 hours to watch a movie, refusing to let Netflix have first run movies for streaming, not signing more tv show rental agreements, etc.) is just their attempt to keep fleecing the sheep, and keep the "value" of their content artificially high. Can't tell you how many friends I have who are all about getting Netflix for $8 a month, even after I warn them that they're not going to see very many first run movies like that. Imagine what it would be like if they could.

A good number of the original HD-ready projection TVs didn't support 720p60 since that required a higher bandwidth than 1080i. In any case, I have a 53" Hi-Scan Sony TV which only supports 480i (4:3), 480p (16:9), and 1080i (16:9). It still produces a really nice picture and has the advantage of a full-frame 4:3 aspect ratio for classic movies and non-HD TV (i.e. no black bars with 4:3 material). In fact, it probably offers something closer to a true cinema experience than many of the TVs that are being sold today.
