I just read the news on CNN an also read that in after hours trading Apple's stock plummeted over 6%

Oh my. No Steve at Macworld. this means no new products, or excitement. I thought the laptop roll out in October was pre-mature....

Last year for Macworld? what will I have to look forward to in January after Christmas. this is so so sad. I know the economy is in the dumper, and my local news channel reported we are in the worse shape since 1930 (yes just about the time of the great depression before WWII created all the jobs to make supplies for the military that brought us out of the depression). They also reported that 2009, the economy will continue to decline and may not start to recover until 2011 or 2012

I guess what now. a few apple fans predicted that when Apple moved to intel and quality started sliding, that Apple would turn into just another computer company and the products would just start appearing in regular stores.

iphones and ipods start appearing at Walmart
Macs at best Buy.

Does this mean they will follow Dell, and Gateway and eventually close all the stores and sell in Walmart too? I hope this is not history repeating itself.

Gateway was the premier computer company in the early to mid-1990's. then they opened all these exclusive Gateway Country Stores, then ventured into selling other products like Cameras, sound systems ,etc. Then BAM out of nowhere - one year they closed all the stores, went to an online only company, now they are owned by Acer and have sub-par laptops (only 1 model) at Walmart.

I am not saying this will happen to Apple, but - look at a pattern:

GateWay Apple
--------- ------
top company top company
opens exclusive stores opens exclusive stores
ventures into other products ventures into other products
CEO drops out of Picture Steve not at Macworld, pretty much silent
Eclusive stores close ????
Becomes online sales only ????
Buys out E-machines Um Psystar???
Gets bought out by Acer ?????
Pretty much non existant ?????

I always hate to fear the worst, but I see a pattern, and this bad economy is supposed to last for years (we may not see the bottom yet). I know noone will be able to afford premium products for a long time.

this is troubling. I think the only thing that may keep Apple's stock from spiraling tomorrow would be an announcement that due to economic situations, they are slashing prices on their products to remain competative.

The difference is - Apple's retail stores have been big successes, while the Gateway stores were abysmal failures. Apple's branching out into other products have been tremendously successful in many areas (phones, music players) while Gateway's attempts to branch out were almost universally abysmal failures.

And Gateway lost out primarily because they fell behind Dell, HP, etc. For your analogy to work, we'd need some rival company that ate into what Apple does best - like a Sony. But Sony so far has not shown themselves to be particularly up to the task.

I certainly hope not

OK, so he's not Steve, but he's probably suitable to be Apple's CEO. Jobs likes him and he's had enough experience at the company. I think he's probably Apple's best option for a replacement, unless Tim Cook comes out of the shadows...

*shrugs* Nothing new here. The Apple of old is gone. Replaced with a highly aggressive corp entity willing to do anything to make a buck at any cost and no matter who they step on to do it. This is just shedding the last remaining shreds of the community. Think Difference has been dead for years. the difference is that Apple's fans have refused to see it. No doubt many still will. Flame away guys....but its true nonetheless.

I'm hope you're over reacting, but I fear you may be correct.

I know everyone is going to speculate about Steve's health being the cause, but I think it's more likely a result of (in no specific order):

[1] Apple no longer focusing solely on the Mac platform. Let's face it - most of the news these days is about the iPhone or iPod anyway.

[2] Intel platform means there can't really be too many bombshell hardware announcements, as the roadmap is clear and competitors are quick with similarly spec'd kit.

[3] Apple is a fan of special events, and dropping out of MacWorld frees them from having to have something spectacular to unveil every January, and frees us of the disappointment when what is shown is less than we want or predict.

All in all, a sad day, but perhaps not the end of the world.:)

I personally think you hit the nail on the head, especially with #3. Apple, like most of the industries is trying to get away from the use of things like Macworld, etc.

I sense a rift between Apple and IDG, which we got a glimpse of several years ago when Apple pulled out of the New York/Boston expo. The fact that this announcement came so close to the show itself, when IDG was telling us to expect Steve to be announced as the keynote speaker at any moment, suggests that something needed be resolved between the companies but wasn't.

Most likely the underlying reason. The rift in '02 (about moving from NYC to Boston in '04) revealed Steve's willingness to pull out of MacWorld altogether. Apple and IDG were likely holding out for a resolution of terms, which apparently did not happen.

what did we do to deserve this!!!?

On a serious note, like previous comments have said... it's most probably a transition. Apple can't live off Steve's aura forever. And receiving high expectations yearly for keynotes only to be unable to pull out another iphone revolution puts them in a bad light.

I didn't read anywhere in that PR that Steve Jobs won't be AT the keynote, he's just not presenting the keynote. I'm sure he will be there and will probably even have a few minutes on the stage too, just as he has shared the stage with Phil and Ive in the past.

That said, I agree with the person that said this was a bad move for the religion and a good move for the company. All companies need to work on reducing costs during these tough economic times. It costs MILLIONS of dollars for Apple to attend a trade show like MacWorld Expo! Money, frankly, that could be put to use in better ways. But as a Mac zealot, I'm still bummed so I understand the concerns and pain voiced here.

Rest assured, the company WILL go on and in a grand fashion, I'm sure!

People that are saying we will never see another stevenote ever again really need to step back and take a breath. It simply states Apple isn't attending macworld anymore and SJ won't be there this year.

Apple will most likely release products on their own time that is best for them at their own special events, and I'm sure steve will be doing the keynote presentations there.

Who knows Apple might start their on special event named Apple World on Apple's on campus.

It really does make sense for Apple to pull out of Macworld. Trade shows are old now and it makes sense to pull out now when the economy isn't looking to good.

Prediction....

Based on this news... AAPL hovers between low 80s to low 90s for next few weeks. At MacWorld, Schiller gives solid keynote with new Imacs, MacPro, AND MacMini (with HDMI). One more thing... calls Ive on brand new iPhone (version 3) for videochat using new front-facing camera and video features.... Ive walks on stage as they talk to great applause... as crowd simmers down... another call comes in (from you know who... SJ looking quite fit) for a 3-way video chat... "Coming June 2009..." goes up on screen as lights fade. AAPL moves quickly past 110 and hits 150 before year end 2009 based on continuing growth of laptop share, solid success with desktops, and very robust US and global iPhone revenues.

Great fantasy! It is not likely that Apple would announce a new iPhone in January, as it would put a damper on sales up until then. Wouldn't mind Steve making a cameo appearance though, leaving Macworld on a high note!

Agreed. It would be nice to have Steve neatly integrated somehow...
