I know people will spin this about Jobs' health, but it really didn't seem that Apple had the products for a big keynote this year.

That's what I wrote here a couple days ago. The last few "events" introduced curved iPod nano and a new manufacturing process for the insides of a notebook computer. What's left for January 09? I guess Steve felt embarrassed to go on stage and announce "earbuds now come in five exciting colors. Oh, and one more thing: Apple will release a new OS version in six months with no new features. Thank you, that's all"

Steve likely read that script and said "No way, I'm not doing it. I won't make a fool of myself in public."

Nevermind.
OK

Based on this news... AAPL hovers between low 80s to low 90s for next few weeks. At MacWorld, Schiller gives solid keynote with new Imacs, MacPro, AND MacMini (with HDMI). One more thing... calls Ive on brand new iPhone (version 3) for videochat using new front-facing camera and video features.... Ive walks on stage as they talk to great applause... as crowd simmers down... another call comes in (from you know who... SJ looking quite fit) for a 3-way video chat... "Coming June 2009..." goes up on screen as lights fade. AAPL moves quickly past 110 and hits 150 before year end 2009 based on continuing growth of laptop share, solid success with desktops, and very robust US and global iPhone revenues.

You heard it here first...

Optimistic. Perhaps too much so. Here's what I think:

Updates to:
Mac Mini
iMac
Mac Pro
iPhone to 32 gb
(40 minutes)

Snow Leopard talk
(10-15 minutes)

SJ at the end saying hello, looking normal, reviewing MWSF history and saying goodbye to MWSF.
(10-15 minutes)

End of show.
(0 minutes)

OK

Yeah, I'd say that's about right. I like the idea of animated Steve though!

Apple will say what they will about not participating in Macworld, or Steve Jobs not being part of the convention.

but both are bad.

Instead, Apple ought to demand that Macworld be moved to a more cost effective convention hall. Moscone is ridiculously expensive !!

The unions at Moscone are crazy obscene.

I know everyone is going to speculate about Steve's health being the cause, but I think it's more likely a result of (in no specific order):

[1] Apple no longer focusing solely on the Mac platform. Let's face it - most of the news these days is about the iPhone or iPod anyway.

[2] Intel platform means there can't really be too many bombshell hardware announcements, as the roadmap is clear and competitors are quick with similarly spec'd kit.

[3] Apple is a fan of special events, and dropping out of MacWorld frees them from having to have something spectacular to unveil every January, and frees us of the disappointment when what is shown is less than we want or predict.

All in all, a sad day, but perhaps not the end of the world.:)

Your third point is absolutely the big reason why this is happening. Apple has all the personality traits of its leader especially the control freak mentality. They're a big, diversified company that wants to call all the shots and have events when THEY want to have them, not when IDG does.

Your second point is more sad than anything else. Apple can't surprise anyone with Mac announcements anymore. In fact they can't even keep up with the PC world that's had Core i7 based machines shipping for weeks already. We'll be lucky if there's one in a Mac by April.

This just confirms that there'll be nothing much announced on January 6.

Plea to Jonathan Ive: Show Steve that a medium size desktop/tower/cube/sphere/pyramid computer can be attractive enough to sit on his desk. I'll put mine on the floor beside or under my desk like 99.99% of desktop owners because it's the hardware and OS that matter not the look of the box, but Steve cares about cosmetic things so make it look nice and you might just save the Macintosh in the process.

Earth to Steve. Look at the mess you've made. You left a gaping hole in the desktop market and, BAM!, Psystar fills that hole. Not a big deal you say, desktops are dinosaurs, but if Psystar didn't exist you wouldn't be in court defending your right to tie the MacOS to specific hardware. If Psystar wins the Macintosh as we know it ceases to exist. That would not only have huge negative consequences for Apple, it would make you look like an idiot.

We, your desktop customers, have been telling you for years about the hole in the lineup and you've arrogantly gone your own way. Part of me wants to see Psystar win just so I can say I told you so.

It must have always been a drag trying to develop products to perfection against a deadline of January. At least now if a product won't be ready until February it can be announced at a special event with immediate availability.

Didn't expect this move.

This is pretty bad for customers. Apple's timeline for new hardware is now much less predictable.

I think a small part of me just died inside. :(

R.I.P. Macworld

I really will miss the hype and excitement building up to the event. I also had the dream of attending a "Stevenote" one day :(

Didn't expect this move.

I hope they will come up with an innovative new way to showcase and announce things then. Of course we will see things show up on the home page of apple.com but maybe they will finally do a live feed on the home page or something new and cool and interactive.

I hope they at least keep doing events on campus with the videos posted soon after like they have been for a while now!!!

P.S. I think Steve's health is fine, but I think he will probably retire within 3 years or so. What a sad sad day that will be! :(

I can see why they want to do it.

Macworld implies everything to do with mac COMPUTERS.

Macs are brilliant don't get me wrong but apple is no longer apple computer.

To me this is apple saying look we know where we have come from but we no longer wish to be confined in to the small box which is representred by the Mac,

It's a great signal as I want more products like iphone ie totally blue sky and revolutionary. I just can't get excited by another imac powerbook, a big cat named OS or another mac air.

So I won't be staying up to watch the keynote stream from engadget this time. Steve's not there so obviously nothing exciting is coming-except if another imac or powerbook turns you on, for me they' re a big yawn.

I upgraded to Leopard and I can't see what the fuss is about. An operating system is an operating system is boring. Snow leopard, who cares.

I want to be able to touch my imacs screen now - it's so frustrating.

Bring on the tablet or PDA iphone.

It's a shame :( It's nice having these predictable events setting the pace of Apple development and releases. I do worry a little that if they let themselves off the leash too much then they'll start resting on their laurels.

Stevenotes are insanely great. I think it's sad that we seem to be coming to the end of the rebirth of Apple. I wish I'd been earlier to the party.

Touching the iMac screen might not be such a great idea - you would spend more time cleaning it than actually using it. An extra large multi-touch mouse-pad - now this would be useful. Bring on the iTouch tablets, iPhone minis, updated iMacs and Mac Minis. We'll be ready with our wallets open.

Well if you ask me I think Steve isn't presenting in the keynote because there might actually be some BOOing from a few brave souls in the crowd for some new lame feature that doesn't address any of the current problems aka getting rid of firewire, no push apps on iphone which was promised to be delivered in september, sucky mobile me, glossy screens, a desperately needing to be revised Final Cut Pro (last major update was April 07), ignoring A2DP support!!!, ignoring Bluray!!!... and those are just the top of my list.

THAT is for me the biggest worry. Apple has always been extremely secretive but we always knew that something was coming at MacWorld now they can completely control their secrecy. Now consumers will have ZERO knowledge on when to buy a new Mac. And I'm not even talking about the corporate market...

And as said before, maybe it's not a bad thing if Steve were to step down. So they can finaly fill that gaping hole where the consumer minitower needs to sit. They're throwing stones into their own windows by NOT releasing that mythical desktop Mac.

You're right, Apple has inexorably been drifting away from computers and towards gadgets for some time. Personally I've always been more interested in the computers - 7 or 8 years ago I could go to the Apple website and find a ton of things I was tempted to buy, now I rarely visit their website as it's just crummy phones and mp3 players :( Only the Mac Pro does anything for me, and that's not without its faults.

The best thing they could do this Expo is probably announce a new license for Mac OS X and allow it to be installed on anyone's hardware. They can then go ahead an concentrate on their iGadgets and iToys and we can run Mac OS on serious computers.

I can see why they want to do it.

Man I am so bummed. I always wanted to make the trek one day to see Steve live. I guess that won't ever happen now.

Apple clearly doesn't believe they need Macworld to hype their products. I for one think they are making a mistake, but it would be a small one at best.

They got a LOT of publicity out of those keynotes, but perhaps the cost was just too high.

The thing I don't believe is that Macworld will exist without Apple. So I bid it a fond farewell.

I don't care in the slightest about this, it'll have ZERO effect on the products Apple make or when they release them and that's all that matters.

Actually it will make a difference as to when they release them. They are no longer constrained to releasing something in Jan, which to any business mind is a bit of a strange thing to do anyway. Who buys in Jan, when getting over the headache of Xmas?

We now have May releases of Macbooks, July releases of iPhones, September releases of iPods & usually something in Oct/Nov for the Christmas market.

I'm betting on a Feb/Mar special event to talk about Snow leopard/SDK Mark II.
