At least Apple is finally realizing they are lightyears behind on the AI front, so are taking steps to acquire and parter with companies leading the way.

Incredible. A post about Apple making a huge AI acquisition has to go in the political forum because of the country the company is from. I didn't even notice that in the post until the comments. Why does everything have to be so politicized.

No discussion at all about why Apple might think this company is worth $2 billion, whether any of this will show up in currently existing iPhones, what this means for their decimated AI division, none of that?

I mean China is being thrown under the bus almost every day on here. It's worth questioning buying a company from the world leader in spyware tech run by a far right government. Nothing to do with Jews

I remember prior to our current era of maximum graft, Apple notably had one of the smallest Washington lobbyist operations in Silicon Valley. But Orange Man upended all that and now some poor chump at Apple Industrial Design has to design and fabricate a literal participation trophy for Tim to present to the felon in the Oval O.

Apple has shown its hand time and again, standing for defense of civil rights, of LGBTQ rights, of privacy itself. And because of this I believe the men and women within the circled walls have no love for the pedophile-in-chief.

Yet let us not pretend virtue alone rules. Words may be noble… but when coin is weighed, honor so often bleeds. In the end, it is the bottom line that survives.

But who truly knows the truth?

Most of those countries don't go around telling everyone they "are the only democracy in the Middle East" or many other things that come out of there that do not align with the actions the country commits in the region and to people it occupies.

And I can be sure that most people are appalled at what's happening in the US and ICE, so no it's not Israel or anti this or that. It's about pointing out when something is wrong or hypocritical.
I guess Japan pretending the rape of nanking didn’t happen is ok and sourcing screens from Japanese companies isn’t comparable because Japan isn’t in the Middle East?

Apple today confirmed to Reuters that it has acquired Q.ai, an Israeli startup that is working on artificial intelligence technology for audio.

Apple paid close to $2 billion for Q.ai, according to sources cited by the Financial Times. That would make this Apple's second-biggest acquisition ever, after it paid $3 billion for the popular headphone and audio brand Beats in 2014.

Q.ai has developed technology that can "analyze facial expressions" to understand "silent speech," according to the Financial Times.

"Patents filed by Q.Ai show its technology being used in headphones or glasses, using 'facial skin micro movements' to communicate without talking," the report said, adding that this could pave the way for "non-verbal discussions" with Siri.

Q.ai CEO Aviad Maizels previously founded another Israeli startup, PrimeSense, which was also acquired by Apple in 2013. Apple used PrimeSense's technology to develop Face ID, which debuted on the iPhone X in 2017.

Q.ai's founding team will join Apple, including Maizels, Yonatan Wexler, and Avi Barliya.

Apple's chipmaking chief Johny Srouji described Q.ai as "a remarkable company that is pioneering new and creative ways to use imaging and machine learning," in a statement shared with Reuters. "We're thrilled to acquire the company, with Aviad at the helm, and are even more excited for what's to come."

This acquisition comes as Apple's former design chief Jony Ive has been working with OpenAI on a new AI device, and as other companies like Meta have released AI-powered devices such as the Meta Ray-Ban glasses with an in-lens display.

The future just went from crowds of people publicly talking into their smartglasses to crowds of people publicly mouthing silently into their smartglasses.

Israeli tech company’s are incredible. Smart people, all our Apple silicon is because of Israeli tech company’s. I know many that work there and they are so smart, Apple has made the right decision and I’m sure it will help us with our tech.
Yeah and $20,000 Celebrite devices so Western powers can break into the phones of anyone they want. I imagine my feelings about Israel are similar to how a lot of people feel about the US right now even though it's too complex to blame on the citizenry. IMO Israel, lately, looks brutal even compared to the US. Israel and US is a classic case of "the student has become the master".

It’s amazing how anti-Israel people are but they don’t seem to care about all the atrocities other countries commit
We don’t fund most of the other countries’ atrocities and let them bitch-slap us around, that’s a unique privilege we save for israel bc we felt bad that they got wrecked in WW2 so we decided to gift them a country, limitless military security, and indiscriminate funding. So yeah, we get a little more upset about them being sh¡tty than the countries who do it all by themselves without our help.

There’s no arguing that these Israeli companies are very good at what they do. But the results may not be what one wants or expects.

They aren’t?
It’s certainly possible that I’m not informed enough; if that’s the case please let me know where else we’re funding such things so we can look into it and make up our minds; our leaders are far from perfect so I wouldn’t put it past them. But when it comes to israel, the US populace is aware, and we’ve made up our minds.

Wonder if it can detect "rolling my eyes" ... that would be most useful
Finally Siri will be able to understand the extent to which it drives me nuts as I growl with frustration because it plays a different song by a different artist when I specifically request certain song and artist.

I’m just going to gloss over the main issue with this acquisition and say this: when will apple dish out the real money and acquire Anthropic???
