What would you guys do if Google pulled the plug from iPhone for services like... SEARCH? Or maps, email, etc?
So Apple buys Chomp, takes it away from Android and suddenly we're living in a world like 1984? That's a pretty big leap. Apple bought something they thought would be useful, then took it away from their direct competitor. I don't see what's surprising about this. You say that competition is important, but things like this are part of competition; one company tries to better itself to knock out the competitor. What else would you expect?
apple isn't of course... wow get an education.
I hate Microsoft as much as anybody. And I don't mean "dislike their products," I mean deep, visceral hatred.*
But Microsoft doesn't currently creep me the hell out. They want to sell me an overpriced word processor and half-baked but passible OS. Google wants to know everything I do, ever, so they can sell other people ads against me, and are openly willing to track me across every single Google-service-using site on the web, which is the entire web, give or take some porn. Given the choice between those two evils, I'll choose
Hmm yeah, Windows is passable and half baked OS so far so it does games much better than OSX, it does have much more software, hardware support and developers.
And beside FCP, Aperture or Adobe there are only a few handful worthy apps out there which made for OSX. Microsoft actively develop Office for Mac, while Apple doesn't do the same for iWork. For normal users, there's no thing OSX can do that Windows already could. Average Mac users just trying to be special, unique and different
In fact, Lion is much more half baked OS compared to Windows7. Really sucks for games and It runs hotter than SL and Bootcamp. It crash on me more often than SL did. It eats up RAM like crazy and forcing a "resume" feature which not everyone would like to have. What a perfect OS huh?
Back to topic .. I dont really mind about Apple or any company buying small time apps, Google, Apple does that everyday. It's capitalism and free competition. But if I were Apple I wouldnt plug off support for Android, instead I'd use it to promote Apple on PlayStore. "Chomp by Apple" surely could even lure people to buy iOS hardware. Safari and iTunes for Windows were one of few reasons I bought a Mac computer.
Yes, Lion crashed a lot when it came out but it's fine now.
You can disable the "resume" feature, no one's forcing it on you.
And how does gaming make an OS any more or less baked?
Since when does the "average" user need to play games?
Aside from Adobe, Office, FCP and Aperture, what other apps do you exactly need? Who cares what Apple does with iWork.. if it works for you then you use it, otherwise use Office.
Still complaining? Boot Camp/Parallels your lovely copy of Windows and run Office there. Last I checked, Windows can't do that.
Here's a huge thing the "average" users you mentioned care about.
No hassles, no maintenance and a user experience that doesn't make them feel stupid.
When I was exclusive to PC's I was maintaining that thing all the time. I can't remember the last time I had to do anything on my Mac other than click "Install" on Software Update.

Irrational thinkers, ie; blind Apple fanbase is a serious problem.
Theres nothing wrong with buying and enjoying Apple products. But theres a lot wrong with the idea that Apple should buy out everyone and essentially turn the market into 1984 (ironic, isnt it...??)
ok, ok, we get it. You're an enlightened, rational, open-minded thinker who will be the lone survivor when the 1984 apocalypse arrives.
Goodness.
Yada yada you know the whole speech. The point? Irrational or crazy thinkers are not bad. They are just different. And we all need to respect this. While some see them as the crazy ones, we see genius.

Like what, Bing?
Thats a microsoft service. Anything and everything microsoft related within the Apple community is ridiculed beyond belief and Bing is no exception. But that goes for anything non-apple. The only way to fully satisfy these obsessed apple evangelists is to have Apple take over literally every market and slap their logo on everything.
Its like theres no room for alternatives, EVERYTHING must be Apple.
Unfortunately even with their crazy fantasy it would be the most destructive idea ever, essentially killing competition and making innovation stagnant. Why would Apple or anyone else need to innovate if there arent any other players?
And most importantly... WHEN DID CHOICE BECOME A BAD THING?
Lol.. Average user dont need games? Tell that to iPhone/iPad users where games sells a lot. OSX does not get a good and new game (except for diablo3 in coming month) nor support it any better than even iOS, let alone windows. Average users do games.
Hmm windows have VMware if you want to be so pedantic about virtual machine capabilities on Windows.
Funny. I bring in my iMac twice within first year for display problem, the second was for crashed OS which happens to be a gpu failure. My old Pentium4 pc at least had been fine for the last 6 years
Please stop Apple is perfect attitude. Mac fails just as much as "the other side" and OSX is not as secure as you want to imagine. Only thing that I still happy with Apple is their excellent service support and AppleCare compared to other pc companies. Outside those, Mac repair and maintenance always cost you arms and legs. Just wait until your precious Macbook run out of warranty and lost its logic board or GPU. You'd hate them for life to make you pay absurd amount for it.![]()
What if IBM had simply bought out the fledgling Apple Computer company in 1980 and killed off the Apple line?

Your Apple products must have gremlins in them. Please take notice and call your local Ghost Buster exterminators.
I have only once in 15 years had an Apple product not functions as expected and when it did, Macbook Pro, I took it back and received with little fan fare or excuses a brand new one. End of story. Now get your self back to Dell and live in true Utopia, I know I do since I make a ton of money dealing with Win world problems.I for one am Glad Apple products do not rule the corporate world, after all money
is very important to me.

Ouchh, wow .. I paid premium price for my Mac just to find out there are gremlins inside them. Wow I thought OSX is the safest OS on earth. Yeah I called Ghostbusters and luckily they sort it out so far
Thank God though Apple Genius and technician is 1000x nicer than youExcellent service and attitude made me able to endure and tolerate problems which overcome my Mac.
I enjoy and love Apple products just as the girl next door. But reading people praising OSX as perfect environment and bashing Windows completely is just a funny frivolity.I personally respect and admire what Microsoft has achieved with Windows 7. There are no more constant maintenace or problems some Mac fanatics seem to claim for a looong time.

How odd, I've seen a few companies that took over universal apps/programs continue to offer it, even if it's the the competition, such as Skype still working on Mac.

Then no Apple.
What exactly were you trying to say with your post?
And you don't just "buy" another company. It isn't like walking into a store, picking something off the shelf and having the cashier ring it up.
Why doesn't Apple just buy...
The only difference between Apple and Google is:
Apple sells us insanely great and simple products.
Google sells us.
that used to be the case but since Apple has gone with iAds they now sell both good products and us.
