What if IBM had simply bought out the fledgling Apple Computer company in 1980 and killed off the Apple line?

Then we wouldn't all be here talking about Apple. It would be just like the numerous other companies that have been bought out and taken over. It happens in the business world all the time.

As I said before, Apple bought a company they thought would be useful, and they stopped offering that company's services to their direct competitor. Pretty much standard business practices. I honestly don't understand what people are freaking out about.

its easy to see the people in here who have business sense, and those who dont.

Chomp had a service. It was good, apparently. Chomp made money by providing a service to as many people as it could through software on multiple platforms.

Apple likes this service. They decide to purchase it, and use it to sell their hardware, which is how apple makes their money.
Why would Apple spend a second of time, or a penny of money keeping a personel team in their new software acquisition to support a platform running on competing hardware?

Breakdown:
Apple sells hardware. Supporting platforms used by other hardware manufacturers is stupid.

What would you guys do if Google pulled the plug from iPhone for services like... SEARCH? Or maps, email, etc?
Already use something else. But I would access it via web, not an app.

Besides Apple even pulls services it offers to its own customers! Ie. Rosetta, legacy iTunes backup data not accessable to new hardware, and, dude, that's a biggie!

Rocketman

Search is fundamental to Google's control-the-world strategy. End-to-end user experience is fundamental to Apple's control-the-world strategy.

Every company EOLs aging and obsolete software.

The problem I see with that is that they didn't...just like Microsoft didn't in the 90's. It's kind of a poor idea to run ideas off of "what if's" and "could have's."

All Apple did was buy a small company and start to incorporate them into the bigger picture, like they've done before. We'll probably see parts of Chomp in iOS/iTunes at some point. I agree that most of you haven't heard of Chomp before, I know I haven't. Stop complaining that Apple bought a company they deemed useful, Google has done the exact same thing.

Irrational thinkers, ie; blind Apple fanbase is a serious problem.

Theres nothing wrong with buying and enjoying Apple products. But theres a lot wrong with the idea that Apple should buy out everyone and essentially turn the market into 1984 (ironic, isnt it...??)

How stupid. "buy out everyone"? Talk about exaggeration. Apple's notorious for NOT buying others.

So Apple buys Chomp, takes it away from Android and suddenly we're living in a world like 1984? That's a pretty big leap. Apple bought something they thought would be useful, then took it away from their direct competitor. I don't see what's surprising about this. You say that competition is important, but things like this are part of competition; one company tries to better itself to knock out the competitor. What else would you expect?

Hell, Apple does this to their own customers. Who remembers the Siri app?

Not surprising at all, and really, it just makes sense.

Then no Apple.

What exactly were you trying to say with your post?

And you don't just "buy" another company. It isn't like walking into a store, picking something off the shelf and having the cashier ring it up.

alternatives...

Like what, Bing?

Thats a microsoft service. Anything and everything microsoft related within the Apple community is ridiculed beyond belief and Bing is no exception. But that goes for anything non-apple. The only way to fully satisfy these obsessed apple evangelists is to have Apple take over literally every market and slap their logo on everything.

Its like theres no room for alternatives, EVERYTHING must be Apple.

Unfortunately even with their crazy fantasy it would be the most destructive idea ever, essentially killing competition and making innovation stagnant. Why would Apple or anyone else need to innovate if there arent any other players?

And most importantly... WHEN DID CHOICE BECOME A BAD THING?

I love Apple products but also don't want Apple to slap they logo on everything. Competition fuels innovation and the iPhone and iOS is a testament to that.

And although anything Microsoft might be ridiculed, that mostly comes from psycho Apple fans that refuse to use a good application or service based on "principle." I, however, use Bing as my default search engine on all my Apple devices. Bing is great and I would say very comparable and sometimes even better than Google. It also does not remember your search history and as far as I know, Microsoft does not hand over the search history. I could be wrong though.

Good for Apple.

I have no sympathy for Google - they're getting beyond arrogant and overbearing. Google is not doing anything to make things better for the consumer - they're doing everything in their power to consolidate and harvest data for themselves.

Hopefully they remove Google from search preferences in Safari and use their own mapping service, too, in iOS6.

Bing *is* better than Google by a long shot - I use them and love them. Plus, not having Google get their hands on everything I do is an added bonus.

I don't consider Microsoft to be a competitor to Apple any way. Microsoft makes software while Apple makes hardware - two different things. Microsoft even makes Mac software.

Yes, I'm less of a fan with Balmer at the helm then I was Gates but that's only because I liked Bill Gates more than I do Steve Balmer.

Microsoft was praised by Steve Jobs for doing a good job on Bing! at one of the keynotes FYI.

And choice isn't a bad thing, when it spirals out of control and cheapens the brand, that's when it becomes a problem.

You can't honestly tell me the bottom of the barrel PC's and Android phones are good for anyone.
Something you're going to be using a lot should be an investment. Spending $300 on a PC and $49 on a crappy phone isn't investment, it's a waste of money and resources.

ok, ok, we get it. You're an enlightened, rational, open-minded thinker who will be the lone survivor when the 1984 apocalypse arrives.

Goodness.

It's business, not personal. This makes perfect sense for rational business operation. People need to calm down.

Company A sees Company B with a technology Company A wants. Company A buys company B and refocuses Company B's technologies for Company A's products. Company B no longer exists to sell its services to Companies C-Z. What's so shocking about this?

You complain about choice in one post then get mad because people choose Apple in another?

These mythical "fanboys/iSheep/whatever" barely exist. I can honestly only thing of one and he admits it.

Just because someone likes/chooses Apple doesn't mean they're a blind Apple worshipper.

Seriously if this is how you feel about every post why are you here?

It isn't his fault, Apple kicked his dog.

To those complaining about this, it's not exactly like Apple just bought the sole search provider for Android and shut it down. They bought a relatively small company that helped with app discovery, and in-housed it. It's not like there is now no way to find an app on the Android market (or whatever it's called now). I'm sure that there are plenty of other options, and if there aren't, there will be now that there's a competitive void. That kind of thing happens all the time to all sorts of much larger products.

Apple isn't the slightest bit interested in taking away Android users' ability to find good apps. They just want this particular way for themselves. I will bet any sum of money you'd like that Apple will not buy any of the other app discovery services for Android.

Chomp != Google. Period.

Nothing. I already switched to DuckDuckGo for desktop search, and flipped the Bing switch on my iPod. Google's still ahead on Maps, but I'm not sure how long that will last, either.

Thats a microsoft service. Anything and everything microsoft related within the Apple community is ridiculed beyond belief and Bing is no exception.
I mocked Bing roundly, and it's not as good as Google at all, but it's nowhere near that simple.

I hate Microsoft as much as anybody. And I don't mean "dislike their products," I mean deep, visceral hatred.*

But Microsoft doesn't currently creep me the hell out. They want to sell me an overpriced word processor and half-baked but passible OS. Google wants to know everything I do, ever, so they can sell other people ads against me, and are openly willing to track me across every single Google-service-using site on the web, which is the entire web, give or take some porn. Given the choice between those two evils, I'll choose the lesser.

Which, currently, is Microsoft.

*Aside from the fact that they bought out two of my four favorite video game companies to make them XBox exclusives (which was acceptable competition, which doesn't mean I have to like it), they wasted literally dozens, if not hundreds, of hours of my time as a web coder by letting IE6 stagnate with its egregious bugs in their attempt to lock up the web. Hours that I could have been doing something useful, productive, or at least entertaining. That was personal.

Most importantly, why does all this affect you so deeply? Just ignore them and be happy. :D

I wouldn't miss it one bit. I'm already considering ditching Google for Bing.

So, in other words, Google would alienate a bunch of their own customers. That's a great idea  There are plenty of alternative ways to access Google's services than with iOS specific clients, (e.g. any web browser).

I don't see what the big deal is with Apple buying a company that offers a single, specific service. You mean to tell me there isn't another alternative to it on Android? If so, it's incredibly sad.

It's simple:

  • Apple has Search Options from other providers and can boost resources to improve on them.
  • Apple has GIS/GPS/Mapping solutions that will eventually replace Google Maps.
  • Email? I've got email. Web-based GMail is garbage, but then most people don't realize what they can do with IMAPS and add-on services if they set up their own Domain and ran Email services on a Mac Mini.

Seeing as Google cannot afford to do this without losing billions in ad-revenue your hypothetical doesn't hold water.

But say Google is willing to disable cancel those lucrative contracts with Apple, don't be surprised if Apple has options ready to flip the switch.

startpage works for me. I scrapped google a long time ago and I don't miss it for a second. :D
