Does anybody have any inclination on what Best Buy will do with this promotion? They've usually just knocked off the value of the gift card when purchasing during the B2S promotion, so if the laptop was 1099 after the education discount the final price would be 999 after the 100 itunes gift card. Any chance best buy will knock 200 off the price for the value of the headphones?

This is a good way to get more Beats headphones out in the wild to make people want them more.

"All the cool kids have them"

I seriously don't think so. I would love to see the reaction of people here if Apple included their aging iPod with a new Mac sale, especially when the value of them has gone down due to near everyone having a smartphone. So trying to sell an iPod is basically a waste of time. Giving something for free that is very popular in the eyes of kids and college students makes much more sense.
I just love the attitudes here suggesting, "If it's not for ME, it's a bad deal".

The "aging iPod" was just released last week. I never said it was a bad deal with the headphones. I said it was a great deal. But to me, personally, any iOS device beats headphones any day of the week. You have a different opinion, good for you.

Absolutely brilliant marketing this to get youth hooked on the brand.
The nay sayers don't get it and are showing their age.
I am an old fart, BUT I can see that giving BEATS headphones to the young generation is a smart move.

As it is dubbed BACK TO SCHOOL , i.e. for young people. It is not for older target groups or bargain hunters.

My eldest son will be attending University in the fall, and I am going to buy him a new Mac. This promotion doesn't do much for him or me. I will wait for a deal from Best Buy. Last year, I bought a new 2014 MBA 13in for $750 ($1000 - $150 student discount - $100 sale). Hard to beat! ;)

I'm curious as to how many of the people complaining about what Apple is offering are actually students who are going "back to school". Or are most of them older adults who are not able, or shouldn't be taking advantage of the deal anyway. I highly doubt that too many HS or college students would be super upset about getting a pair of beats headphones for free. I may be wrong, but I doubt it based upon the students at the school where I am principal.

So free crappy headphones?

Remember when we got gift cards? Or iPod Touches?

If you remember those days, then this promotion probably isn't directed at you anymore. This is a BACK TO SCHOOL promotion - something to encourage students, mostly those starting college this fall, to pick a Mac over one of their other options. 18 year olds heading off to college are probably SUPER STOKED BRO about this promotion. This is not quite as good as the iPod Touch promo from a value perspective... But these kids already all have iPhones, so for the current market it is more relevant and a step up from the iTunes gift card.

It's actually not more suitable. As I said earlier most likely the kids didn't use these cards for anything on the iTunes store to improve their education. If you truly think that, I have an igloo to sell you that remains frozen in the middle of the desert for the entire summer. Yes, you should try harder because your argument is failing. Caio. ;)

My argument is failing, yet yours is summed up with "most likely". Clearly you're right and - once again - my OPINION is wrong.

Caio!

Man.. I miss the iTunes credit already.
iTunes credit no longer makes sense when most kids are streaming music instead of buying albums. This is a smart move as it gives the kids something to listen to that streaming music (presumably Apple radio).

this is one of the most embarassing "sales", nevermind even for Apple.

wow. Just... wow.

if you're a student, trying to afford a new computer to go back to school. getting a free pair of headphones, while not nothing, doesn't exactly making the purchase of a new computer easier.

Not even a gift card. not even a discount of small sorts on that laptop

and whats more insulting, to the students, just this same very week, Apple showed they made nearly 40% profit on all these products.

if I were a student looking for a good, affordable laptop, Apple just left my list.

which is sad, because Macbook Air's in particular make for excellent school computers.

Seriously, Apple. if you get students into the eco-system, even if it's at a slight discount now, they're likely to stay in your ecosystem and pay for bigger things later. you're essentially telling students "we don't want you as customers".

Every one else in the industry has big sales right now. Whoever made this decision needs to be fired.

You do realize you get an education discount on the computer right? Your post indicates that you are not aware you get a discount AND free headphones.

Paying for Apple Music (or any other streaming services that has in-app purchases) via the gift card works just as well. Not to mention the plethora of apps that they can also be using.

I can see it now. College campuses covered with people wearing beats headphones. Count on it.

I can see it now. eBay flooded with these because nobody wants them. Count on it.

I don't know 1 single person who wants a Beats headset.

Lots of cynical jerks in here, or rather people who would take advantage of back to school: cynical jerks who aren't really in school.

For some kids who are going to take advantage of this and get their first Mac, this is a pretty awesome offer. Beats are fashionable and very popular. To me, this back to SCHOOL promotion, for younger people in school, is actually more appropriate than $100 for apps.

A lot of people on MacRumors, maybe. But for the general public, a lot of people, mainly the ones going to college/school, don't have this idea. We of course hear about it all the time, so it's familiar to us that Beats are apparently garbage. I have personally never listened to them, but have heard the newer ones are doing better. Still not worth the price, but better.

We sometimes forget that we are just a small, be it knowledgeable, sector of Apple customers. The average kid sees all their friends with Beats, celebrities with Beats and Beats in Apple stores. So their mindset is that they want to be a part of the club. Apple knows what they're doing (most of the time). And this is just another example if you think about it from a business standpoint.

MacRumors' members won't be able to understand this logic though.

How about $100 off a mac?

If you sign into the education Apple Store, you can get 100 - 200 dollars off a mac already.

You guys are being the MOST ridiculous right now.

Should have been "up to $200 off any Apple Product with purchase of Mac".

So people can use that credit to go toward a new iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad...

Headphone's pointless, it kills your hearings.

Headphones kill your hearings? I hope you realize how nonsensical everything in this comment is. Especially considering you most often use headphones with all of your posted suggestions.

It would still be a better device for free, which is my point.

Anything is better for free. What kind of point is that?

Weren't the computers discounted in the past? Wasn't it an extra $100 for most Macs? Or was that just the normal education discount? They used to give a free printer (or $100 off/rebate) too...

Gary

Gary, a promotion is different from a discount. The headphones and $100 iTunes cards were seasonal promotions. The $100 to $200 off the purchase of Macs is a discount available year round.

Macrumors should revisit this in a month or two in the future with an article on how the supply of new Solo2 headphones increased on eBay and how that deflated the price. It would be interesting.

The best tactic would probably be to pay the extra and then sell them on eBay. Reason: most people whose intention was to sell would just go with the basic model and therefore the price will be depressed, most people paying for the upgrade would intend to keep them therefore less price depression.

Nah. MacRumors' members complained about the $100 dollar gift cards because they weren't free iPods or whatever Apple offered in the past. Next year, members will complain about whatever is offered then. It's how the cycle works.

maybe different for the Canadian side, I'm not finding any discount on the laptop in our store.

I took five seconds to google and found Canadian educational discounts.

This is pretty sad and shows how Angela Ahrendts phoned this in without giving it any deep thought. Not to mention it being late and causing parents and grandparents more stress than they deserve.

Maybe Apple need someone on the team who's mind is still rooted in the street as clearly they are all living in cloud cuckoo land.

Very stressful!!!
