$999? Who would ever buy the non-retina MBP? What a joke. And the rMBP is pictured.

It's still the MacBook Pro though. They are just showing the Retina version. But yes, they should probably show the regular version.

Are Beats headphones still terrible (and no, not based on audiophiles)? I thought some of their newer models were supposed to be better.

Beats headphones are so low in build quality, design and sound overall... I can't believe Apple is trying to shove these atrocities upon us, truly disappointing.
That may be your opinion, but I can tell you from my experience that the beats headphones I got last year are very good in build quality and sound reproduction. I was a studio engineer for many years, and even though there are better headphones than beats, they are pretty good, and a no brainer if they are free. I heard over and over last year that beats were terrible and I was surprised to find out how good they actually were. If you don't want them, give them away.

Sure - they're going to have to refresh the line anyway if they change the headset jack on the new iPhone ;)

Back to school? Did school even end yet??
People often buy the computer they'll need for next year now so they can also enjoy it over the summer

I don't know how bad they were in the past, but I like mine just fine. They were a huge step up from what I was used to using.

That's not even remotely true for the Beats Solo2 headphones. Yes, their sound quality is not as good as other headphones in the price range but they are very good headphones with good design and construction. These aren't the early Beats headphones that were poorly reviewed.

There's no way I'd ever buy these headphones but that's because I don't spend more than $40 on headphones and I also don't really like on ear ones.

Free headphones with buying an iPhone? My daughters school has a policy of zero tolerance using your phone during school hours. Period. Not during lunch, breaks, or anywhere on campus. I'm guessing the school wouldn't be too happy with the kids wearing the Beats headphones that came with the iPhone they can't use!!

Ummm. All of us before there was a retina MBP? Back then, nobody griped about it's screen lacking higher pixel density, so, apparently, it was a perfectly fine, perfectly usable screen back then... for EVERYONE.

Retina is fine and all but it's not like a computer is unusable if it lacks it.

Well said. I paid a little more for mine, but at that price point, it was very competitive with other headphones in that price category. Now full retail? Heck no, but with a 70% discount, not bad at all. I was surprised at the quality.

Crappy headphones won't make up for the lack of a MacBook Pro update Apple...

The Beats wireless headphones are the BEST headphones I could find. My needs for working out / running / cycling were:
(1) Wireless so a cord didn't get in my way, or get pulled thus damaging the headphones when they drop to the floor.
(2) Not earbuds - as they fall out of my ear when sweating
(3) Something that allows them to STAY on my ears, but not huge covering the ear headphones.
(4) Allows noise in - so I can hear traffic and the outside world

The Beats was the ONLY one that delivered.

I tried lots of headphones $100 less, but nothing worked. They slipped out of my ears, or hurt my ears. I tried to avoid Beats as they were so expensive. I finally bit the bullet, found them on sale for $200, and bought them. They're perfect!

I don't need something with perfect sound - that's what my over-the-ear headphones are for that I use while working at my desk, or relaxing at home. I need something that will work in my active situations, and sound quality isn't the most important thing in these situations.

I tried, I really did, but found nothing as good as Beats.

Yes, most colleges in the US have ended, and graduations were in mid May. Summer school starts next week in our local schools.

Ok, well a sale is always great but public schools are actually still in session in NYC. lol This is kinda like seeing Christmas decorations at the end of September.

[EDIT] I see now this isn't really a back to school promotion, not sure why it was reported that way?

People are complaining about it, but it's free. In the UK, they're worth £269.95 - if you don't want them, you could sell them, but even though they're not the best quality, they're still free.

It should launch in the UK soon but I may miss out if Apple doesn't launch their new MBPs soon, which is annoying!

Nope. I use the Powerbeats2 for workouts since one and a half year and they're excellent, great build quality, design and sound.

So if I bought an iPhone 2 weeks ago can I contact Apple for some free headphones?
